"Pregnant woman in dilapidated house" Chapter 4
“That woman always loved pretending numbers made her important.”
Vanessa looked toward the enormous windows overlooking the grounds.
“Where is she now?”
Damian answered first.
“That old farmhouse in the Hudson Valley.”
Vanessa blinked.
“You actually sent her there?”
“We didn’t send her anywhere.”
Victoria’s tone turned icy.
“We simply stopped paying for the life she had no right to expect.”
Damian laughed.
“She lasted longer than I thought.”
“She had nowhere else to go.”
Victoria turned toward Vanessa.
“That is the difference between women like you and women like Elena. Elena mistook access for ownership.”
Vanessa’s hand moved over the fake curve of her stomach.
“And tomorrow?”
“Tomorrow, access ends permanently.”
Damian tapped a folder on the table.
Inside were the documents prepared for the emergency shareholder meeting.
The medical report.
The succession petition.
The trust filing.
The statement questioning the paternity of Elena’s unborn child.
All of it neatly arranged.
All of it designed to look official.
“Once the board accepts the incapacity report, I take executive control.”
Damian sounded almost bored.
“Then we restructure the voting blocks, remove Elena from anything connected to the family, and clean up the rest later.”
Vanessa glanced at him.
“What if Adrian comes back?”
The room changed.
Only slightly.
But Victoria noticed.
Damian’s smile faded for half a second.
Then he laughed.
“He isn’t coming back tomorrow.”
“How do you know?”
“Because every message in and out of his London office passes through people who answer to us.”
Victoria gave Vanessa a sharp look.
“You worry too much.”
Vanessa looked away.
Victoria continued.
“Adrian is thousands of miles away, overworked, exhausted, and surrounded by attorneys who believe his family is protecting the company.”
She smiled.
“By the time he understands what happened, the vote will be finished.”
Damian lifted his glass again.
“And Elena?”
Victoria’s eyes hardened.
“That woman should be grateful we let her leave with the baby.”
The words landed casually.
Almost lazily.
No one in the library noticed the tiny green light above the carved wooden doorway.
No one remembered that Adrian had personally upgraded the estate’s security system after a break-in attempt three years earlier.
And no one knew that several interior security devices automatically backed up audio to a private server separate from the family’s main network.
A server still registered under Adrian Whitmore’s personal account.
Seventy miles north, Elena listened to Victoria’s voice through a laptop speaker.
“That woman should be grateful we let her leave with the baby.”
Adrian stood behind her.
His face had gone completely still.
The farmhouse kitchen was dark except for the laptop screen and a single lamp beside the black folder.
“Play it again.”
Elena looked up.
“You heard her.”
“Play it again.”
She did.
Victoria’s voice filled the room.
Clear.
Cold.
Unmistakable.
Adrian turned away before the sentence finished.
He walked to the cracked window and placed both hands against the frame.

For several seconds, he said nothing.
Elena watched him.
“That recording matters.”
He didn’t turn.
“She raised me.”
“I know.”
“She taught me that family was the only thing money couldn’t replace.”
Elena closed the audio file.
“People say a lot of things before they think they’ll ever be tested.”
Adrian looked back at her.
“How did you find the archive?”
“Your security company emailed me a maintenance notice two months ago.”
“They still had your email?”
“One automated system did.”
A faint smile touched Elena’s mouth.
“Apparently your mother was better at removing people than updating server permissions.”
Adrian returned to the table.
“What else is on there?”
“Enough.”
She opened a list.
“Damian discussing tomorrow’s vote. Victoria confirming she knew about the trust petition. Vanessa asking about money. Several conversations about keeping your London office isolated.”
Adrian leaned closer.
“Can we use it?”
“Daniel says yes, assuming the recordings were lawfully captured by a system you owned and authorized.”
Adrian looked at the screen.
“And they’re sitting in my house celebrating.”
“For now.”
Elena reached for her phone.
“The injunction paperwork is ready.”
“Already?”
“Daniel found a judge willing to review an emergency filing tonight.”
“What exactly are we asking for?”
“A temporary freeze on any transfer of voting shares until the authenticity of the medical documents and succession filings can be reviewed.”
Adrian nodded slowly.
“Do it.”
Elena sent the authorization.
Then she opened another email.
“The bank is next.”
“The mortgage lender?”
“Yes.”
“What are you telling them?”
“That Whitmore Estate may have been pledged as collateral through transactions involving unauthorized corporate funds.”
Adrian exhaled.
“That will get their attention.”
“That’s the idea.”
She hit send.
A second email went to Daniel.
A third went to the legal intake office handling financial crimes referrals.
Adrian watched her.
“You’re sending the twenty-three million file now?”
“Not all of it.”
“Why not?”
“Because I want them interested, not overwhelmed.”
She attached a concise evidence package.
Bank transfers.
Shell-company registrations.
The mortgage documents.
Three signatures flagged for review.
One timeline.
Then she sent it.
Adrian looked at her in disbelief.
“You’ve thought through every step.”
“I had three months.”
He lowered his voice.
“You had three months because I wasn’t here.”
Elena paused.
Neither of them spoke.
Then her phone vibrated.
A name appeared.
RICHARD BENNETT.
Adrian immediately recognized it.
The chief financial officer of Whitmore Global.
“He called you?”
“I called him first.”
“When?”
“Yesterday.”
“And?”
“He didn’t answer.”
The phone stopped vibrating.
Then started again.
Elena picked up.
“Richard?”
His voice came through low and tense.
“Elena, where are you?”
“Somewhere private.”
“Are you alone?”
She looked at Adrian.
“Yes.”
Adrian raised an eyebrow.
Elena ignored him.
Richard lowered his voice.
“I reviewed the vendor payments you flagged.”
“And?”
“You were right.”
Adrian leaned closer.
Richard continued.
“There are at least nine transactions I cannot reconcile with legitimate operating expenses.”

“How much?”
“Eleven-point-four million that I can verify tonight.”
Elena looked at Adrian.
“Keep going.”
“I also found two internal approvals bearing Adrian’s digital authorization.”
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“I never approved them,” he said.
Silence came through the phone.
Richard nearly whispered.
“Adrian?”
Elena closed her eyes.
Adrian took the phone.
“Yes.”
Richard inhaled sharply.
“My God.”
“Do not tell anyone.”
“I thought you were still in London.”
“That’s what Damian needs everyone to think.”
Richard went silent.
Adrian continued.
“Tomorrow morning, go to the shareholder meeting exactly as planned.”
“Adrian, if Damian knows you’re back—”
“He won’t.”
“What do you want me to do?”
“Nothing unusual.”
Adrian looked at Elena.
“Sit in your seat.”
“Listen.”
“And when the time comes, tell the truth.”
Richard exhaled slowly.
“I can do that.”
The call ended.
For the first time, Adrian allowed himself a small smile.
“One.”
Elena looked at him.
“One what?”
“One person inside the building who isn’t theirs.”
“Maybe.”
“You don’t trust him?”
“I trust records.”
Adrian almost laughed.
“You really haven’t changed.”
“Oh, I’ve changed.”
Elena looked toward the leaking roof.
“I just got less polite about it.”
Back at Whitmore Estate, the celebration had grown louder.
Damian had removed his jacket.
Vanessa sat in Adrian’s chair now, laughing as Damian poured champagne into her glass.
Victoria looked at the clock.
“Enough.”
Damian glanced at her.
“It’s barely ten.”
“You have a company to take over tomorrow.”
He raised his glass.
“I thought that was the easy part.”
Victoria gave him a warning look.
“Arrogance ruins men faster than incompetence.”
Damian smiled.
“Adrian taught you that?”
“No.”
Victoria looked toward the dark windows.
“Your father did.”
Vanessa’s phone buzzed on the table.
She checked it quickly.
Her face tightened.
Damian noticed.
“Who is it?”
“No one.”
He reached for the phone.
Vanessa pulled it away.
“I said it’s no one.”
Victoria studied her.
“Is there something you’d like to tell us?”
“No.”
Vanessa forced a smile.
“Nothing.”
But her hand remained clenched around the phone.
Across the screen was a message from an unknown number.
WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT YOUR MEDICAL RECORDS.
She deleted it immediately.
At the farmhouse, Elena watched the delivery confirmation disappear from her laptop.
Then she picked up her phone.
Adrian looked at her.
“Who are you calling?”
“Your brother.”
His expression changed.
“Now?”
“Now.”
Elena dialed.
Damian answered after four rings.
“Well.”
His voice was amused.
“Mrs. Whitmore.”
Elena kept her tone flat.
“I want to return the Whitmore documents.”
Damian laughed.
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“What documents?”
“The family files I still have.”
“That’s very responsible of you.”
“I thought you’d appreciate it.”
“Oh, I do.”
Damian paused.
“In fact, bring the car keys too.”
Elena said nothing.
“Vanessa likes your car.”
Adrian took one step forward.
Elena raised a hand, stopping him.
Damian laughed again.
“You remember Vanessa, don’t you?”
“Yes.”
“She looks good in your things.”
Elena’s eyes dropped to the laptop.
On the screen, Victoria’s recorded voice sat frozen beneath an audio waveform.
Damian continued.
“Come to the tower before the shareholder meeting.”
“What time?”
“Eight-thirty.”
“I’ll be there.”
“Good.”
His voice softened into something cruel.
“And Elena?”
“Yes?”
“Try to wear something presentable.”
