"Pregnant woman in dilapidated house" Chapter 5
He hung up.
Adrian stared at her.
For several seconds, Elena said nothing.
Then she slowly lowered the phone.
A smile touched her face.
Not a happy smile.
A dangerous one.
“I’ll bring everything.”
Part 5 | Thank You for Slapping Me
At 8:21 the next morning, Elena Hayes Whitmore stepped out of a yellow cab in front of Whitmore Global’s Manhattan headquarters.
She came alone.
No Adrian. No Daniel Brooks. No security team.
Just Elena in the same inexpensive navy maternity dress she had worn for months, a charcoal scarf around her neck, and the black folder tucked beneath one arm.
The seventy-two-story glass tower reflected the pale morning sky.
For nearly four years, employees had watched Elena enter through those revolving doors beside Adrian, usually greeted by name before she reached the elevators.
Today, the security guard looked uncomfortable.
“Mrs. Whitmore.”
“Good morning, Marcus.”
His eyes dropped briefly to her stomach.
“I’m sorry, ma’am. I was told your building access had been suspended.”
“By Damian?”
Marcus hesitated.
“That’s all right.”
Elena smiled.
“I’m expected.”
She walked toward the lobby.
The moment the revolving door turned, conversations began to die.
Employees stared.
Two junior executives near the elevators stopped speaking entirely.
Elena knew what they saw.
The discarded wife.
The pregnant woman who had supposedly been thrown out because Adrian no longer wanted her.
The woman Damian had spent weeks describing as unstable, desperate, and financially dependent.
Elena kept walking.
Then she saw Victoria.
Adrian’s mother stood beneath the enormous Whitmore Global logo in an ivory suit, pearl earrings, and heels that probably cost more than Elena had spent on groceries in the last month.
Victoria had not come alone.
Three board members stood nearby.
So did two senior executives and several employees waiting for elevators.
Perfect.
Victoria’s eyes traveled slowly from Elena’s shoes to her dress.
Then she smiled.
“Elena.”
“Victoria.”
“I’m surprised you came.”
“You invited me.”
“Damian invited you.”
Victoria’s gaze settled on the black folder.
“I assume those are the documents.”
“Some of them.”
Victoria’s smile thinned.
“Still playing accountant?”
Elena said nothing.
Victoria stepped closer.
The expensive perfume was familiar.
For years, Elena had smelled it across Thanksgiving tables, charity galas, and private dinners where Victoria had smiled while reminding everyone that Elena had not been born into their world.
“I heard there was rain last night.”
“There was.”
Victoria tilted her head.
“So the abandoned house finally became unbearable?”
A few employees looked down.
Elena noticed.
Victoria noticed too.
That was why she continued.
“I warned you, didn’t I? Pride becomes very expensive when you don’t have money.”
Elena tightened her grip on the folder.
Not because the words hurt.
Because she needed to remember not to smile too early.
“It taught me something.”
Victoria raised one eyebrow.
“What?”
Elena looked directly into her eyes.
“Rats get careless when they think the house is empty.”

The lobby went silent.
Victoria’s face changed.
Only for a second.
But Elena saw it.
“What did you call me?”
“I didn’t call you anything.”
“You insolent little—”
Victoria stepped forward.
The slap cracked through the marble lobby.
Elena’s head snapped sideways.
Someone gasped.
The black folder nearly slipped from her arm.
For one second, Elena tasted blood where the inside of her cheek struck her teeth.
She did not raise her hand.
She did not shout.
She slowly turned her face back toward Victoria.
A red mark was already forming across her cheek.
Victoria was breathing hard.
“You will not speak to me like that.”
Elena stared at her.
Then she lifted two fingers to the edge of her scarf.
Beneath the fabric, clipped discreetly near her collarbone, was a tiny camera.
Its indicator light was on.
Elena touched it once.
“Thank you.”
Victoria froze.
“What?”
“Thank you.”
Elena’s voice was almost gentle.
“For what?”
Elena glanced toward the security cameras overhead.
Then back at Victoria.
“For making that easier.”
The color drained from Victoria’s face.
“You’re recording me?”
Elena didn’t answer.
Victoria reached toward the scarf.
Elena stepped back.
“Touch me again.”
Her voice remained quiet.
“And this time, we’ll have an even more interesting morning.”
“You think a video changes anything?”
“No.”
Elena adjusted the folder beneath her arm.
“Evidence does.”
Victoria’s eyes narrowed.
“What have you done?”
The elevator chimed.
Elena walked toward it.
Victoria caught her arm.
“Where do you think you’re going?”
“To the shareholder meeting.”
“You are not a shareholder.”
Elena looked down at Victoria’s hand.
“Take your hand off me.”
For some reason, Victoria obeyed.
“You have no business in that room.”
“Then I’m sure Damian will enjoy telling me himself.”
The elevator doors opened.
Elena stepped inside.
Victoria followed.
The doors closed on a lobby full of stunned employees.
For several floors, neither woman spoke.
Then Victoria laughed softly.
“You really believe Adrian is coming back for you, don’t you?”
Elena watched the floor numbers rise.
“I didn’t say anything about Adrian.”
“He’s done with you.”
“Is he?”
“He was done with you months ago.”
Victoria’s confidence had returned.
“You were convenient when he wanted to rebel against this family. That’s all.”
Elena turned her head.
“Then why did you need forged messages?”
Victoria’s smile vanished.
The elevator continued upward.
Forty-three.
Forty-four.
Forty-five.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Of course you don’t.”
“Elena.”
“Yes?”
“You are making a very dangerous mistake.”
Elena almost laughed.
“I’ve been living in a house with half a roof for three months.”
She looked at Victoria.
“You’ll need to be more specific.”
The elevator reached the executive floor.
Victoria stepped out first.
“Whatever you think you found, it won’t matter.”
Elena followed.
“Then you have nothing to worry about.”
At the end of the corridor, two security officers stood outside the main boardroom.
Through the glass wall, Elena could see more than twenty people seated around the long walnut table.

Damian stood at the front.
Richard Bennett sat near the middle.
He did not look toward her.
Good.
Inside the room, Damian clicked a remote.
The screen behind him changed.
A photograph of Adrian appeared beside a clinical report.
Damian’s voice carried through the closed doors.
“My brother’s condition has deteriorated significantly over the past several months.”
One director leaned forward.
“What condition?”
Damian lowered his eyes as if the answer pained him.
“A severe psychiatric episode.”
Richard Bennett’s jaw tightened.
Another director frowned.
“Adrian negotiated the London acquisition personally.”
“He began experiencing symptoms during those negotiations.”
Damian changed the slide.
The physician’s report filled the screen.
Dr. Stephen Mercer.
Paranoia.
Aggressive behavior.
Impaired judgment.
Risk to self and others.
Unfit for executive duties.
Damian sighed.
“My family wanted to keep this private.”
Victoria entered the room.
Every eye turned toward her.
She took her seat with perfect composure.
No one looking at her would have guessed she had slapped her pregnant daughter-in-law less than five minutes earlier.
Damian continued.
“But Whitmore Global cannot be governed by sentiment.”
A director near the end of the table spoke.
“Has Adrian personally been evaluated by the board’s medical counsel?”
“His private physician’s report is sufficient under the emergency succession clause.”
“It may not be.”
Victoria leaned forward.
“My son needs treatment, not interrogation.”
Her voice trembled with carefully measured emotion.
“He has been under extraordinary pressure.”
Damian nodded.
“We are trying to protect him.”
Outside the boardroom, Elena almost admired the performance.
Almost.
One of the security officers stepped toward her.
“Mrs. Whitmore, I’m afraid you can’t enter.”
Elena looked at his name tag.
“Paul, did Damian tell you that?”
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Did he also tell you I’m dangerous?”
The officer looked uncomfortable.
“I was told there could be a disruption.”
Elena smiled.
“Then I’d hate to disappoint him.”
Inside, Damian advanced to the next slide.
“This brings us to another sensitive issue.”
Victoria folded her hands.
Richard Bennett looked up.
The screen went black.
Then white letters appeared.
ELENA HAYES WHITMORE — PATERNITY FRAUD.
Murmurs erupted around the table.
Richard’s chair scraped against the floor.
“What the hell is this?”
Damian raised one hand.
“Please.”
He waited for the room to settle.
“As painful as this is, the board must understand why Elena Whitmore has been removed from all family-controlled accounts and properties.”
A photograph of Elena appeared.
Then a copy of one of the forged messages.
THE CHILD MAY NOT BE MINE.
Damian faced the directors.
“My brother had serious doubts about his wife’s fidelity before his breakdown.”
“That’s a private marital matter,” one director said.
“Not when inheritance affects voting control.”
Damian clicked again.
The succession amendment appeared.
He let the board read it.
“Adrian authorized a formal challenge to the paternity of Elena’s unborn child.”
Richard stared at the signature.
His expression darkened.
Damian continued.
“Until paternity is established, Elena’s child cannot be recognized as a legitimate Whitmore heir.”
Victoria lowered her eyes as if ashamed by the scandal.
A female director across from Richard spoke sharply.
“Is Elena aware you’re presenting this?”
“She is aware of the allegations.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
