"Crowned in Dragonfire" Part 6 — The Seal Above My Heart
Part 6 — The Seal Above My Heart
Queen Lenora read the confession twice.
"Cassian signed the search himself," she said.
"Celeste may have lied about what the guards would find," Elias replied, "but the prince ordered them to enter the Observatory without witnesses. He made the forgery possible."
I stared at the black seal.
For three years, Cassian had said my father forced his hand by predicting a child king. Now the truth was smaller and uglier. Celeste had feared the one man who understood forbidden star rites, and Cassian had destroyed him to spare her discomfort.
"Take this to the king," I told Lenora.
"A torn confession will not overcome Celeste while she carries the heir."
"Then do not ask him to believe the confession. Ask him to watch what they do next."
The investiture was supposed to take place in six days.
By noon, King Edmund announced it would happen in two.
Celeste visited my locked chamber wearing the silver-and-blue gown prepared for the ceremony. The stolen pregnancy curved proudly before her.
A maid followed with a cup of black liquid.
"The Favor Engine dislikes unfinished work," Celeste said. "Drink."
"What is it?"
"A severance draught. After tonight, the child will never feel you again."
I did not reach for the cup.
Celeste smiled. "Your father is still in the lower dungeon. Refuse, and he will be dead before supper."
The threat revealed what I needed.
"If Gideon were useless, you would have killed him three years ago."
Her smile vanished.
"You still need the man who can read the rite," I continued. "Perhaps the Favor Engine gives instructions but cannot finish the work itself."
She slapped me.
I used the blow to strike the maid's wrist. The black draught spilled across the floor, eating pale scars into the stone.
Celeste seized my hair.
The child roared inside her.
She collapsed, both hands flying to her belly. Gold blazed through the line over my heart.
Then the sealed bond broke open.
"Mother!"
His voice flooded me with heat and terror.
For one instant, I saw through him.
Behind Celeste's eyes floated a knot of gray smoke shaped like a turning wheel. Threads ran from it into Cassian, the palace, and the golden fire beneath Valedorn itself.
Words appeared within the smoke.
FAVOR THRESHOLD: COMPLETE.
SOVEREIGN EXTRACTION: FORTY-SEVEN PERCENT.
The thing Celeste called a system was not rewarding her. It was feeding every time Cassian placed her above his oath.
Images poured through the gray threads.
Cassian breaking our betrothal without Council review. A river in the western counties drying to mud. His warrant against my father. Grain ships vanishing in a clear sea. The silver-hemlock draught touching his lips while frost killed the southern vineyards.
Each private betrayal had become a public wound.
The Favor Engine had never created Celeste's good fortune. It had taken power from Valedorn and dressed the theft as a reward.

The child bit one of its gray threads.
Somewhere beyond the windows, thunder rolled across a cloudless sky.
Celeste screamed and struck her temple. "Stop! Leave the Engine alone!"
She fled with Malrec's maid supporting her.
That night, I told Queen Lenora and Elias what I had seen.
Gideon's old writings supplied the missing language. A parasite bound to royal choice could not simply be cut away. It had to be exposed through the authority it was corrupting.
Elias spread the three surviving rune impressions across the queen's table. The broken curves formed a single instruction when reflected in a silver mirror: the false mother could claim the body, but only sovereign authority could sever the first mother's name.
"Celeste will need either the king or the heir to the throne," he said.
"Edmund would never knowingly kill me," I replied.
Lenora's mouth hardened. "My son might."
No one defended him.
So we gave Celeste a final instruction to steal.
Elias prepared a false translation of the Wombshift runes. It claimed the lingering life bond could be destroyed only by pressing the Great Seal, inked with the Crown Prince's blood, over the first mother's heart.
I carried the paper openly when Malrec's spy brought my evening meal. I hid it badly beneath my pillow.
The spy found it exactly where I intended.
Queen Lenora took the real confession to King Edmund. She also carried the bracelet impression, the physician's report, and the names of the guards who had watched Malrec transfer Celeste's pain into me.
The evidence was still incomplete, but it was enough to make the king open Gideon's sealed case file in Lenora's presence. Hidden beneath the forged star charts was an inventory referring to a forbidden ledger that had never been produced at trial.
Lenora sent one white-wolf guard to the dungeon with the king's countersign and another to the old Observatory vault. If the ledger remained where Gideon had hidden it, my father would walk into the chapel carrying the part of the truth Celeste believed destroyed.
"If he still refuses to see," she said, "I will bring the Council against my own son."
"Do not enter until the Seal is in Cassian's hands," I told her. "He must not be able to say he never intended to use it."
Elias caught my wrist. "If the king is late by one breath, you die."
"Then make certain the doors open on time."
On the eve of the investiture, Celeste's guards came for me.
They bound my hands and took me through a private corridor to the old council chapel. Malrec had drawn a narrow circle around a chair. Cassian stood beside it holding the Great Seal of Valedorn.
Two palace guards closed the doors behind us. Both wore Celeste's silver rose, but one touched his thumb to his forefinger—the signal Queen Lenora had chosen. At least one witness inside the room still answered to her.

The law required the Great Seal to remain in the king's archive unless used before three members of the Privy Council. Cassian had removed it in secret. Even if our plan failed to expose the magic, the theft alone could strip him of command.
It was larger than both his hands, carved from dragonstone and gold.
Celeste sat opposite me. Pain had hollowed her cheeks, but triumph shone in her eyes.
"You should have drunk the draught."
"You should have learned to recognize bait."
For the briefest moment, uncertainty crossed her face.
Malrec tightened the ropes around my chest. "Her courage will not matter when the bond is gone."
Cassian cut his palm and let his blood run across the Great Seal.
I looked at him. "Did they tell you what this does to me?"
His gaze shifted toward Celeste.
"It ends the conflict."
"It ends my life."
Silence filled the chapel.
Malrec did not deny it.
"The first vessel has already been marked for collection," he said. "Her death is the final payment."
Cassian flinched, but he did not lower the Seal.
"You hear him," I said. "No prophecy. No confusion. No one is deceiving you now."
Celeste rose. "If Elara lives, the child will never accept me. You promised I would become the most powerful woman in this world."
Cassian's bleeding hand tightened around the Seal.
"You signed the warrant that buried my father," I said. "You watched her tear your child out of my body. Now you know this will kill me. There is no lie left for you to hide behind."
His face went pale.
For a moment, I saw the boy who had once sworn he would protect my family.
Then he lifted the Great Seal.
"Your father's name will be restored," he said. "Your estates will be returned. I will see that songs are written about your sacrifice."
"And that will make murder honorable?"
"It will give your death meaning."
Inside Celeste, my child screamed.
Malrec pulled open the collar of my gown, exposing the golden line above my heart.
Cassian lowered the blood-wet Seal.
I did not struggle.
Behind the chapel walls, metal struck stone.
Once.
Twice.
Celeste leaned close. "You were never the heroine, Elara. You were only the price of my ending."
The Great Seal touched my skin.
The chapel doors exploded inward.
King Edmund entered with the Royal Guard at his back.
Beside him stood my father, alive and unchained, holding the complete forbidden ledger against his chest.
