"My Daughter Asked My Billionaire Boss to Be Her Daddy." Chapter 1
The Vacancy
"You're too handsome to be alone," my six-year-old daughter told the most dangerous man in Manhattan. "I think you should be my daddy."
Every man in the executive corridor stopped moving.
I stood twenty feet away with a presentation folder crushed against my chest, watching Adrian Kane crouch before my daughter. His charcoal jacket pulled across broad shoulders. One hand held her drawing; the other rested loosely on his knee, a silver signet ring catching the light.
People had lost considerably more than their jobs for approaching him without permission.
Mia had approached with a purple crayon.
Then he laughed.
It was warm and startled, a sound so unlike him that his security chief looked up from his phone.
"Mia!"
She turned, her glittering sneakers squeaking. "I found your boss, Mommy."
"I can see that."
At thirty-two, I had survived childbirth, unpaid rent, and six years of assembling furniture without a second adult. Nothing had prepared me for my child proposing fatherhood to Adrian Kane.
At forty, he owned the group that employed me, half the buildings I passed on my commute, and the silence of men whose names never appeared in company reports.
Publicly, he was a billionaire investor. Privately, the Kane family ran an organization nobody sensible called a family business within earshot of a microphone.
I worked for its legitimate creative agency. I approved advertising concepts, not shipments arriving after midnight. After two years, I knew which questions belonged to my salary.
That morning my childcare had collapsed at seven. My nanny's ceiling had flooded, my mother was stranded in Atlanta, and my best friend was away. At two, I had to pitch the Blackwell & Reed account, the opportunity I had spent months preparing for.
Serena, our chief operating officer, had authorized bringing Mia in. I had installed her in my office with headphones, crackers, coloring books, and Gerald, her stuffed elephant.
"No adventures," I had said.
"I will stay right here," she had promised.
Then board preparation moved unexpectedly. Elena, Adrian's assistant, had agreed to keep an eye on her between calls. Eighteen minutes later, I returned to an empty office.
Now Mia was studying the boss as though checking a rental apartment for adequate sunlight.
"He was alone," she explained.
Adrian glanced down at the drawing. It showed a brown-haired woman, a little girl, and a tall black rectangle with a head.
"I assume this is me," he said.
"You have better shoes in real life. I couldn't draw the shiny part."
"You captured my expression remarkably well."
"I didn't give you a mouth."
"That is probably why."
Behind him, his security chief made a sound suspiciously like a cough.
"Mia, you cannot ask strangers to become your father."
She frowned. "He isn't a stranger. You complain about his emails every night."
Adrian's gaze rose to mine.
I wanted to walk into the Hudson.

"We should leave you to your work," I said.
He stood. Up close, his attention had the unnerving weight of a hand settling against my skin. I had seen him dismantle a negotiation without raising his voice. I had also, inconveniently, noticed the dark lashes framing his gray-blue eyes.
"Before you go," he said, "I would like to understand the vacancy."
"There is no vacancy."
Mia pulled at the skirt of her yellow dress.
The movement was small, but I knew it. She did that when she thought she had broken something expensive.
Adrian noticed too. He lowered himself again.
"Why do you want me to be your daddy, Mia?"
Her eyes moved to me.
"Because Mommy doesn't know I heard her talking to Grandma."
My fingers loosened around the folder.
"What did you hear, sweetheart?"
"You said you wished there was one more person who loved me enough to stay."
The corridor seemed to fall away.
I remembered wet shoes on our kitchen floor, a dead car battery, Mia asleep with a fever. My mother had called. I had finally stopped pretending I was simply busy.
Someone who knew the song she wanted when she was sick. Someone who showed up because they wanted us.
I had thought her bedroom door was closed.
"I wasn't listening on purpose," Mia whispered. "I wanted water."
I crouched so quickly my knees struck the carpet.
"You haven't done anything wrong."
"You said you didn't have time to find anybody. He works here already."
Beside me, Adrian went very still.
"And you thought that would help?" I asked.
She nodded. "He has room in his office. There aren't any people in his pictures. Only gray buildings."
I pulled her into my arms. Her hair smelled of strawberry shampoo. For years I had worked to give her everything I could, and she had been quietly worrying about what to give me.
When I lifted my head, the corridor was empty except for Elena and the security chief. Adrian had cleared it without a word I had heard.
"Being a father is a serious job," he told Mia.
She turned within my embrace. "You look serious all the time."
"Appearances can be misleading."
"You would have to learn pancakes."
He considered this. "I would require instruction."
"They need chocolate chips. Mommy uses the little ones because they spread better."
He looked at me then, and something in his face made it difficult to breathe.
"I see," he said.
I stood, gathering the shreds of my professional dignity. "We have a presentation."
He arranged the glass project room beside Conference A, with Elena supervising and Mia visible through the wall. When I tried to thank him, he merely took the bent folder from my hands and smoothed its cover against the table.
His knuckles brushed mine.
"You prepared for six weeks," he said quietly. "Go show them."
During the pitch, he challenged my figures and made me defend my strategy. When a director interrupted, Adrian said, "Let her finish."
I did. By the final slide, the chairman was leaning forward.
We won a second meeting.
Afterward, Mia flung herself against my legs. Adrian stood in the doorway watching us, his expression unreadable again.
"Did Mommy win?" she asked him.
"She made them listen. That is usually where winning begins."
Pride warmed me. His gaze held mine long enough to make the warmth spread.
That evening, I was washing Mia's lunchbox when my phone lit up.
This is Adrian. Elena gave me your number after asking your permission this afternoon.
I remembered agreeing distractedly, assuming he needed campaign revisions.
A photograph followed. Mia's drawing lay on his immaculate desk. Above the three figures she had written, in crooked capitals, PEOPLE WHO STAY.
She left this with me. I would like to return it myself.
I stared at the message until another appeared.
Would you and Mia have lunch with me on Saturday?
For the first time all day, there was no child between us asking the dangerous question.
There was only him, waiting for my answer.
