"My Daughter Asked My Billionaire Boss to Be Her Daddy." Chapter 5
Sunday Training
At eight fifty-eight on Sunday, Adrian arrived carrying a shopping bag from a kitchen store.
Mia stood on a stool beside the counter, wearing her yellow apron and the expression of a supervisor already disappointed in the staff.
He unpacked a polished pan.
"We have a pan," she said.
"This one distributes heat evenly."
"Our one makes pancakes already."
He looked at me. I leaned against the refrigerator, enjoying myself.
"She makes a compelling argument," I said.
"I am beginning to understand your negotiating style."
He rolled up his sleeves. A dark tattoo disappeared beneath the fabric along his inner forearm. I had seen it once before when his cuff slipped in a meeting. Here, in my kitchen, it made me remember how his hand had felt at my waist.
Mia gave him a whisk.
"You have to mix until the powder goes away."
"I believe I can manage that."
Ten minutes later, batter dripped from the cabinet handle.
"That was more enthusiastic than necessary," I observed.
"The bowl moved."
"The bowl was stationary," Mia said.
Adrian gave her a grave look. "I had hoped for loyalty from my instructor."
His first pancake resembled a map of an undiscovered country. The second folded over itself. The third landed neatly on the stove beside the pan.
Mia looked at me with growing concern.
"Are we still having breakfast?"
I laughed until my eyes watered.
Adrian stared at the fallen pancake, then laughed too. It filled my little kitchen, a sound so different from the clipped voice that ruled boardrooms that I wanted to keep it there.
Eventually, we ate four acceptable pancakes and several pieces Mia called practice food.
His phone vibrated twice. He checked the screen on the second call.
Whatever he read erased the amusement from his face.
"I need five minutes," he said to me.
He stepped into the hall. Through the door, I heard a few low words.
"Vittorio has my answer. He does not use my employees to reach me."
Silence.
"Make sure he understands."
I held my coffee without drinking. When he returned, Mia was arranging chocolate chips into a face.
"Did your uncle forget about email again?" she asked.
Adrian paused. "He is having difficulty adjusting."
"Grandma is like that with the television remote."
He sat beside her. The coldness left him by degrees, and I watched the effort it took.
Later, Mia went to her room to make Gerald a restaurant. Adrian stood beside me at the sink, drying plates with a towel too small for his hands.
"Was that about Saturday?" I asked.
"Partly. My uncle believes family authority should be shared. I disagree with his definition of sharing."
"And Bellini?"
"Works for him. He will keep his distance."
I turned off the tap.
"I need you to tell me if there is something that affects Mia."
He put down the plate.

"I will."
The answer was simple enough that I could hear whether he meant it. I believed he did. Believing him made the next question harder.
"When you imagine being here," I said, "are you thinking about Lily when she was little?"
His face changed.
"I liked watching you with Mia today. I liked it too much to pretend I don't worry about what happens when you stop needing that feeling."
He leaned back against the counter, giving the question space instead of closing the distance.
"I miss things I cannot have back with Lily," he said. "Your daughter doesn't give them back to me."
I studied his face.
"When Mia talks, I want to know what she says next. When she makes a drawing, I want to see what she puts in it. I am not looking at another little girl through her."
My throat tightened.
"And you," he added, "are standing here in an old sweater, with flour on your cheek, making it extraordinarily difficult for me to remain a helpful guest. That has nothing to do with being a father."
Heat climbed my neck.
"You haven't been especially helpful with breakfast."
He moved closer. "I was hoping you might give me another assignment."
I reached up and brushed a streak of batter from his sleeve. His hand settled at my hip.
"You can start by kissing me," I said.
His mouth curved before it found mine.
This kiss had none of Friday's uncertainty. He drew me against him, his palm warm through my sweater, and I let the plate towel slip from my fingers. The counter pressed into my back. He tasted faintly of coffee and chocolate.
When his lips moved to my temple, I closed my eyes.
I had forgotten how it felt to be held without simultaneously being responsible for someone else's balance.
He seemed to feel the change in me. His hand spread across my back, gathering me closer without asking for anything more.
We stayed that way until a small voice asked whether kissing meant the dishes were finished.
Adrian looked down at Mia.
"Unfortunately, no."
"Then you should do the dishes first. Mommy says they get crusty."
I hid my face against his chest.
That night, after he left, I found his new pan washed and put away beside my old one. He had not replaced anything. He had made space.
Over the next three weeks, he came twice for dinner. Once, he arrived late and found Mia asleep at the table. He stood in the doorway with his coat still on, looking stricken.
"She tried to wait," I said.
"I should have called earlier."
"You should have."
He accepted that without defending the meeting. Then he carried her to bed while I turned down the blanket.
On the way back, he touched my shoulder.
"I can do better than this."
"I want you to," I said.
Two mornings later, he sent a photograph from his phone. He had marked Sunday breakfast in his calendar.
Underneath, he wrote: My instructor informed me that attendance affects my final grade.
I was still smiling when another message arrived.
Lily called last night. We talked for fifty minutes.
I sat down on the edge of my bed.
Then came a third.
She is coming to New York next Friday. She asked to meet you both.
