"My Daughter Asked My Billionaire Boss to Be Her Daddy." Chapter 7
The Man Who Came Back
The following Friday, my mother took Mia for the night.
Adrian met me downstairs after work. He wore no tie, and when he opened the car door, his hand rested briefly at the small of my back. I had spent the whole afternoon anticipating that touch.
His apartment occupied the upper floors of a building overlooking the river. Thomas remained in the lobby. Upstairs, the rooms were beautiful and too quiet.
Lily's yellow scarf lay over an armchair.
Mia's drawing stood beside her lake photograph.
I stopped in front of them, my coat still on.
"She wanted to know where I had put it," he said behind me.
"Did she approve?"
"She requested a better frame."
I smiled. "She's quite demanding."
"I appear to have a weakness for that."
He took my coat, brushing his lips over the bare place beneath my ear. I forgot what I had meant to say.
Dinner waited in the kitchen, delivered from a restaurant because, he admitted, he wanted the evening to survive his cooking. We ate beside the window, his knee against mine.
Afterward, I wandered toward the shelves. There were books, a small bronze horse, photographs I hadn't seen in his office. A younger Lily asleep on an airplane. His mother beside a garden wall.
Then I noticed the locked cabinet built into the study.
He followed my gaze.
"There are things in this apartment Mia must never open. Everything is secured before she visits."
I looked back at him.
"You have thought about her coming here?"
"I have thought about both of you being here more than I should admit."
My chest tightened.
He approached slowly. This time there was no table between us, no apartment door with my daughter behind it, no reason to turn the moment into a joke.
I touched the open collar of his shirt.
"You don't have to stop at the hallway tonight," I said.
His hand closed over mine. For a second he only looked at me, the restraint in his face making my pulse stumble.
Then he kissed me.
I had expected urgency. It was there, in the pressure of his mouth, in the way he drew me close. But underneath it was something almost disbelieving. He kept pausing to look at me, as though he had imagined this often enough to need reassurance that I was real.
I unbuttoned his collar and kissed the scar near his jaw.
His breath caught against my hair.
"Claire."
The way he said my name made me lift my face.
"I'm here," I whispered.
He rested his forehead against mine. "I know. I am trying to behave as though I deserve it."
I took his hand and led him away from the window.
Later, beneath the soft weight of his sheets, I woke to his fingers tracing slow circles along my shoulder. The city glowed beyond the curtains. His shirt lay on a chair beside my dress.

"Are you awake?" I murmured.
"I am enjoying the evidence that you haven't left."
I smiled against his chest, then grew quiet. He felt it.
"What happened?"
"I was remembering the last time I let myself expect someone beside me in the morning."
His arm tightened, gently enough that it felt like an answer I could refuse.
I stayed where I was.
At dawn, he made coffee. It was excellent, which I told him was an enormous relief for our future.
He looked over the rim of his cup.
"Our future?"
Heat rushed to my face.
He put the coffee down and kissed me until I stopped trying to retrieve the words.
Spring arrived in small pieces after that. Sunday breakfasts. A scarf I left at his apartment. His spare shirt in my wardrobe. He flew to London for Lily's exhibition and sent a photograph of a painting he admitted he didn't understand.
Mia began leaving the third chair pulled out before he arrived.
One Thursday, he missed dinner because a family meeting ran late. This time he called before Mia began waiting. She made him describe his meal and declared ours better.
He called again at bedtime.
I found myself loving him in these ordinary increments long before I dared name it.
Then a black car appeared outside my office, and a driver I didn't recognize told me Mr. Kane had arranged my journey home.
I called Adrian from the pavement.
"Why is there a car here?"
"Thomas will explain the route."
"I asked why."
There was a pause. "Vittorio's people have been asking questions about you. It is pressure aimed at me. I am dealing with it."
Cold traveled through my stomach.
"When did you learn that?"
"This afternoon."
"And you sent a stranger to collect me without telling me?"
"He is one of mine."
"I don't know him. Mia could have been with me."
He went quiet.
"Where are you?" he asked.
"Outside my own building, deciding whether I am allowed to go home."
He arrived in twelve minutes.
We stood in the agency's empty reception area. His face was controlled, but a muscle moved beside his jaw.
"I should have called you first," he said.
"You should have told me what was happening."
"I wanted you safe before I gave you a reason to worry."
"I am worried now. And I had to find out from a man holding open a car door."
He looked away, breathing through his nose.
"When somebody wants a response from me, I know what to do," he said. "When they use your name, I stop being patient."
I stepped close enough to touch his wrist.
"Then tell me while you're angry. Tell me badly if you have to. I need to know the man I am bringing into my daughter's life."
His gaze returned to mine.
We worked out the next few days together: familiar drivers, Thomas as my contact, no changes to Mia's school collection without a direct conversation. I accepted the car. He accepted that doing so didn't end the discussion.
That night, he sat on my sofa long after Mia fell asleep.
"I don't want to lose this," he said.
I sat beside him. "Then stay in the room when I disagree with you."
He took my hand and stayed.
Three weeks later, with the immediate pressure settled and our days beginning to feel ordinary again, an email arrived from Chicago.
Halston West wanted to interview me for national creative director.
The salary made me sit down.
The location made me look toward the third chair at our table.
