"The Heart He Burned" Chapter 10
Julian was struck dumb by Clara’s icy rejection. He could only watch, paralyzed, as Arthur Knight led her away into a world where he no longer had a place.
The following day was the global launch of Clara’s artificial heart. In the backstage lounge, Arthur handed a meticulously prepared speech to Clara.
"This is your first time on the world stage," he said softly. "Are you nervous?"
Clara shook her head, her gaze steady. "No. It’s the first time, but it won’t be the last. I’m standing here because of the technology I built, not because of who I am." She looked at Arthur with a spark of her old confidence. "If anyone’s nervous, it looks like it’s you."
Arthur chuckled, checking his watch. "Time’s almost up. I’ll head to the front to check the arrangements."
Shortly after he left, a knock sounded at the door. Clara, assuming Arthur had forgotten something, sighed. "Mr. Knight, is there something else you need to tell me?"
But as the door swung open, a sharp prick stung the back of her hand. Her vision blurred instantly. In the haze of her fading consciousness, she felt Julian’s arms wrap around her, his voice a terrifying mix of tenderness and obsession.
"Clara... I told you. I’m taking you home."
When Clara opened her eyes, she was back in her old room at the Pierce mansion. Julian was sitting by her bedside, watching her with a longing that bordered on madness.
"Julian Pierce, what have you done? Do you realize this is kidnapping?"
Julian remained unfazed. "Everyone in North Bay knows I raised you. What law is there against bringing my own girl home?" He pointed to a desk cluttered with components and blueprints. "Clara, stay here with me. Focus on the artificial heart research. Once I’m healthy, we can be together forever."
Clara looked at the research materials and then at him, her voice dripping with scorn. "Is this your 'love,' Julian? Imprisoning me under the guise of affection just to save your own life? You make me sick."
Julian grabbed her shoulders, his eyes wild. "Clara, I’m doing this for our future! If I die, who will protect you in this world? Can't you see how much I love you?"
Clara wrenched herself free. "Stop making excuses. You are a selfish, hollow man. From beginning to end, the only person you have ever loved is yourself."
Julian scrambled up from the floor, looking utterly deranged. "No! I have only ever loved you!"
"The way you are right now," Clara said, her voice freezing, "is truly disgusting."
The words broke something inside him. He lunged at her, pinning her down. "You’re just angry! You loved me once, Clara. I know you did!"
Clara fought back, her eyes like daggers. "I hate you, Julian. I want you dead."
As Julian leaned down to force a kiss, a sudden, violent agony erupted in his chest. He gasped, collapsing off the bed and onto the floor, his face turning a ghostly white. He reached desperately for the medicine on the table.

"Clara... my heart... get me the pills!"
Clara sat on the edge of the bed, watching him. She didn't move. She didn't reach for the medicine.
In that silence, Julian’s soul finally shattered. He had told himself her hatred was just anger born of love. But looking into her eyes, he realized the truth: the girl he raised truly did not love him anymore.
Just as Julian surrendered to the darkness, the door was kicked open. Vivian Lim, dressed in a tattered asylum uniform, stood there with a manic grin.
"Julian! You bet everything to bring this bitch back, only to find out she wants you dead, didn't you?"
Julian looked at Vivian with guarded eyes. "How did you get out?"
Vivian stepped inside, a kitchen knife glinting in her hand. "I told you, Julian. If I’m going to rot in hell, I’m taking you both with me." She lunged at Clara. "Clara Joy, you ruined my life! Today, I’m sending you to join your father!"
Before the blade could reach Clara, a figure lunged forward. Julian caught the blade with his bare hand. Crimson blood sprayed across the floor, dripping from his mangled palm.
Vivian screamed in frustration. "Julian! She wants you dead! Why are you still protecting her?"
Julian turned his pain-filled eyes toward Clara. "Clara... from the moment you came to this house, I promised I would protect you. And I have."
Vivian delivered a brutal kick to Julian’s abdomen. "Then die together!" She pulled the knife back for another strike.
Julian used the last of his strength to tackle Vivian, slamming her back toward the window. "As long as I’m alive, I won’t let you touch her."
Vivian laughed hysterically. "You’re the most pathetic man on earth, Julian! You’re dying for a girl who won't even look at you!"
Julian glanced at Clara one last time. "Clara... this time, I will get it right."
With a final, desperate shove, Julian threw his entire weight against Vivian. The glass shattered with a deafening roar. Both of them plummeted from the window.
Clara rushed to the edge. Vivian had landed squarely on her own knife—dead on impact.
Julian lay slumped against the wall below, his breathing shallow. When he saw Clara, a faint, peaceful smile touched his lips. "Clara... I did it. I didn't lie this time."
Clara looked at the dying man. The weight in her heart felt like lead. She looked at the bottle of medicine on the table, picked it up, and knelt beside him, trying to press a pill to his lips.
Julian’s eyes widened slightly, then filled with a soft, starry light. "Clara... I knew it. You still care."
He tried to reach out to touch her face, but his hand fell limp. The world began to fade into a montage of memories—a six-year-old Clara running toward him, laughing. He tried to catch her hand in his mind, but she was running too fast, moving toward a light he couldn't reach.
"Clara... don't leave me..."
His breath slowed, then stopped. Julian Pierce was gone.
Clara sat there, the unused pill still in her palm. Her heart ached, though she didn't know if it was for her lost youth or for the man who had finally found his conscience at the cost of his life.
When Arthur Knight finally found her, she was still sitting there in the silence.
After Julian’s death, the Pierce Group crumbled. Clara spent months in seclusion before returning to Country A. Her first stop was her father’s grave. She spent the afternoon pulling weeds, her movements tireless.
"Dad," she whispered. "Vivian is gone. Julian is gone. Everyone who hurt you has paid their debt. But... why does it still feel so heavy?"
A bouquet of sunflowers appeared beside the headstone. Clara looked up to find Arthur Knight watching her with his clear, steady eyes.
"Because you aren't like them, Clara," he said gently. "If you were as cold and selfish as they were, you wouldn't be the woman I admire."
Clara stood up, the sunlight catching the tears in her eyes. "Thank you, Arthur."
Arthur smiled. "If you really want to thank me, get back to the lab. Do you have any idea how much chaos you caused by disappearing during your own launch?"
Clara laughed, a genuine sound of life returning. "You're right. I’ve got a lot of work to do."
As she walked toward the car, Arthur lingered for a moment by the grave. He looked at the photo of Clara’s father.
"I'm not Julian Pierce," he vowed silently. "I’ll prove it with my life. I’ll keep her safe."
[THE END]
