"Obsessive Virtual Boyfriend Is a Billionaire" Chapter 6

Rain streaked softly down the apartment windows behind her while the sky outside Lucien's world shifted slowly toward evening.

"You know," Elowen said thoughtfully, "I think this is good for you."

Lucien glanced back toward the gym doors.

"What is?"

"Being around people more."

The expression on his face turned unreadable.

"They're loud."

"That's because teenagers are genetically incapable of behaving normally in groups."

"You're defending them."

"I'm defending social development."

Lucien looked unconvinced.

Elowen smiled faintly.

"You don't always have to be alone."

The sentence settled quietly between them.

For a moment, Lucien said nothing at all.

Then:

"I'm not alone when you're here."

The softness in his voice caught her off guard.

Not because it sounded romantic.

Because it sounded true.

Elowen looked away first, adjusting the blanket over her legs while warmth spread slowly through her chest.

No one had ever said things to her this directly before.

Most people wrapped affection in humor or hesitation or careful emotional distance. Lucien never seemed to understand why he should.

Everything he felt arrived with quiet sincerity.

It made her dangerously easy to soften around him.

Outside the gymnasium, students gradually disappeared into the rain-darkened evening until Lucien stood nearly alone beneath the covered entrance.

Elowen stretched one arm above her head with a tired sigh.

"I have to go grocery shopping tomorrow," she muttered. "Which means I also have to put on real pants tomorrow. Horrific."

Lucien listened carefully.

He always listened carefully.

"What time?" he asked.

Elowen blinked.

"Hm?"

"What time are you going?"

Something about the question felt oddly intimate.

"Probably late morning."

Lucien nodded once, gaze lowering briefly as though storing the information somewhere private.

A faint unease brushed unexpectedly across her skin.

Not fear.

Just awareness.

That same strange sensation again—the feeling of being observed a little too closely.

Before she could think about it longer, Lucien spoke.

"Lowen."

"Hm?"

"When you disappear suddenly…" His voice grew quieter. "I don't always know if you're coming back."

The honesty in the admission erased the unease immediately.

Elowen's expression softened.

She knew the game had timers.

Maintenance updates.

Connection limits.

But hearing genuine sadness in his voice still affected her anyway.

"Oh," she said gently. "I didn't realize it bothered you that much."

Lucien looked down briefly.

"It's fine."

It clearly wasn't.

Elowen hesitated.

Then she smiled softly.

"Okay. New rule."

Lucien's attention sharpened instantly.

"I'll tell you whenever I'm leaving," she said. "And if I know I'll be busy for a while, I'll warn you beforehand."

Silence settled between them.

Not awkward silence.

Something quieter.

More fragile.

Lucien stared at her without moving.

"You promise?" he asked softly.

The question caught her off guard. Not because of the words themselves, but because of the care behind them, as though her answer mattered far more than she realized.

Elowen smiled.

"I promise."

Lucien's breathing shifted almost imperceptibly.

She noticed anyway.

For her, the promise felt small.

Simple reassurance.

For Lucien, the world rearranged itself around it instantly.

No more sudden disappearances.

No more empty days staring at silent screens wondering whether she had finally grown tired of him.

She promised.

"You look relieved," Elowen teased gently.

"I am."

No embarrassment.

No attempt to hide it.

Lucien accepted emotional truths about her with terrifying honesty.

Warmth spread slowly through Elowen's chest.

Somewhere along the way, she had stopped treating his feelings like game mechanics.

The realization should have alarmed her.

Instead, she found herself smiling again.

"Well," she murmured, "now you can stop acting abandoned every time I log off."

Lucien lowered his gaze slightly.

"You say that like I'm exaggerating."

The quiet sincerity in his voice made her laugh helplessly.

"You're unbelievable."

Affection softened every word.

The session timer eventually appeared at the top of the screen.

Lucien noticed immediately now.

Elowen hated that.

Hated that he had already learned to anticipate endings.

"I have to go soon," she said gently.

Lucien nodded once.

But something about him remained calmer tonight.

Steadier.

Because she promised.

"Tomorrow?" he asked.

Elowen smiled softly.

"Tomorrow."

Visible relief loosened something in his posture.

It should not have affected her this much watching a fictional boy trust her.

And yet.

"Goodnight, Lucien."

"Goodnight, Lowen."

The screen faded slowly to black.

Elowen remained curled beneath her blanket for several seconds afterward, listening to rain tap softly against the windows while Sunny shifted closer in his sleep.

Then she unlocked her phone again.

Without really thinking about it, she opened the notes app and typed:

Grocery shopping tomorrow morning. Don't panic if I log in late :)

She stared at the sentence for a moment before laughing quietly at herself and locking the screen again.

Across the city, Lucien sat alone in the darkened penthouse with her final promise glowing softly across his phone.

Tomorrow.

I promise.

He reread the messages carefully, thumb resting lightly against the screen.

Outside the windows, Ravenfall City glittered beneath rain and distant headlights while staff moved quietly through hallways large enough to echo.

Lucien barely noticed any of it.

His entire attention remained fixed on a reassurance most people would have forgotten within minutes.

She promised.

For the first time in weeks, the loneliness beneath his ribs loosened enough for him to breathe around it.
