"The Stand-In’s Redemption: Playing the Billionaire for Real" Chapter 5

Chapter 5: The Glass Crown

Even after the heavy glass doors of the luxury mall slid shut behind her, Vivian Hale’s pulse refused to settle.

Her mind was a chaotic vortex, spiraling with dark curiosity about the stranger’s identity and a deeply rooted terror of the sheer danger he represented. Silas Vance didn't move like a hired shadow; he moved like a predator who owned the jungle.

Driving back to the estate, the silence of the car only cemented her deadly resolve. I need to run. Whether it was Adrian or his lethal double, she wanted nothing to do with either of them. To secure her exit, she was going to need the unconscious compliance of Adrian’s latest obsession, Tiffany Rose.

The moment Vivian stepped into the vaulted foyer of the empty mansion, a wave of visceral nausea hit her. The memory of Adrian and Tiffany entangled at the diamond counter made her stomach twist. The humiliation of the past three years was mutating into a sharp, venomous frustration that demanded an outlet.

Needing an anchor, she walked into her dressing room and pulled open the velvet-lined bottom drawer.

Buried beneath layers of silk was a beautiful, hand-fired ceramic mirror. They had sculpted it together on their very first date, under the summer rain of their eighteenth year, right after Adrian had confessed his love. It had been the sacred token of their youth.

Vivian flipped the mirror over, staring at her reflection. Her features were structurally identical to the girl from a decade ago, but the brilliant spark—the life—had vanished from her eyes. They were as still and dead as a pool of stagnant water.

She forced her lips to curl into a smile. The expression dissolved before it even reached her eyes, resulting in a mask so hauntingly synthetic that even she found it grotesque.

Her thumb traced the faint, crude names they had carved into the raw clay before baking it. Hardened by fire and time, the ceramic was now as solid as stone, yet ironically as fragile as a soap bubble. With a sharp, shuddering exhale, Vivian dropped it ruthlessly into the trash bin.

The heavy, hollow thud felt like a funeral knell for her youth. Finally, she was letting go.

Bang!

The bedroom door was violently kicked open, the wood shuddering against the wall.

Adrian stormed into the room, his chiseled face darkened by a thunderstorm of feral rage. His eyes swept the space like an apex predator searching for an intruder before locking onto Vivian.

"When exactly did you get back?" he demanded, his voice a low, dangerous vibration.

Vivian understood instantly. He’s jealous of his own substitute. The hypocrisy was so profound it bordered on comedy. She felt an intoxicating thrill—she was going to drive this man absolutely insane.

Masking her contempt beneath a veil of naive confusion, she stood up to greet him. "Honey, what’s wrong? You told me over the phone that the firm’s executive meeting was running late and you wouldn't have time for lunch. You literally told me to take the car home first. Why are you asking me this now?"

Adrian’s expression fractured, a chaotic sequence of fury and suffocating panic shifting beneath his skin. The rage building in his chest was a volatile bomb, yet he had no logical way to detonate it without exposing his own sins.

Playing her part, Vivian stepped into his personal space. She pressed her soft, delicate palms flat against his chest, smoothing the charcoal wool of his suit as if comforting a temperamental child.

"Who upset you at the office, love? Why such a horrific temper? You were so incredibly sweet to me at the mall earlier... holding me, teasing me in front of everyone."

The remaining color drained from Adrian’s face, leaving him a sickly, poisoned shade of grey.

He stared down at her, his gaze holding an suffocating, transactional intensity. His large hand snaked out, gripping her waist with bruising force as his voice dropped into a raspy whisper. "Are you... are you really on your period, Vivian?"

Vivian’s heart executed a violent leap into her throat.

She had always known Adrian was an astute businessman, hyper-vigilant and paranoid. Until she held the official divorce decree and her international visa in her hands, she couldn't allow a single seed of real suspicion to take root.

Feigning a look of profound heartbreak and bitter indignation, she violently twisted out of his grip and sat on the edge of the mattress, her shoulders trembling. "Do you want to check for yourself, Adrian? You know better than anyone how desperately I want a child with you. Do you honestly think I would turn my own husband away if I had a choice?"

The rigid tension in Adrian’s chest visibly eased. After twelve years of her absolute, unwavering adoration, his ego couldn't conceive of a reality where Vivian didn't belong to him soul and body.

"It’s my fault," he murmured, a rare flash of authentic guilt softening his hard jaw. "I just—"

Vivian cut him off, tilting her head with a carefully rehearsed, playful pout. "I know you're drowning in work, Adrian. I used to be so immature, always begging you to stay home. Actually... I’ve been thinking. I want to go away for a while. To visit all those European cities we promised we'd see but never did."

She left the duration entirely unsaid.

She expected Adrian to swallow the bait with relief, glad to have her out of the way so he could flaunt Tiffany openly. To her utter shock, his sharp brows furrowed tightly, and he reached down, gripping her hand with a sudden, desperate tightness.

"Alright," Adrian said, his voice entirely sincere. "I’ll clear my schedule at the firm and come with you. Consider it a makeup for the honeymoon we never took."

Vivian stared into his eyes, tasting the metallic bitterness of pure irony.

When they first married, her body was a broken shell from the mastectomy and chemotherapy, making travel an impossibility.

After her remission, she had begged him for a honeymoon a dozen times. Each time, he had casually brushed her requests aside, citing market volatility and corporate mergers.

Now, because he had introduced a phantom into her bed—because his fragile ego was losing its mind over the lingering ghost of an affair—he was acting out of sheer panic, desperately trying to lock her in a cage of sudden affection. He wanted everything on his terms.

Then you shouldn't blame me, Adrian, for making the price of admission bleed you dry.

She offered him a bright, ecstatic nod, feigning a girlish excitement as she fluidly pulled her hand from his grasp. "Then I’d better start packing immediately!"

She turned toward the walk-in closet, but after a few paces, a lethal thought struck her.

Spinning on her heel, she glided back to him, throwing her arm around his shoulder and pulling out her phone. Before he could react, she snapped a brilliant, high-resolution selfie of them, her lips puckered near his cheek.

"I'm so incredibly happy," she whispered, flashing him a dazzling smile. "Go take a scalding shower, love. I’ll order some high-end ingredients and cook your favorite dinner tonight."

Suspecting absolutely nothing, his ego thoroughly stroked, Adrian loosened his silk tie and marched into the master bath, turning on the water.

The moment the bathroom door clicked shut, the smile vanished from Vivian’s face like ink wiped from glass.

Leaning against the closet door, her fingers steady despite the adrenaline, she logged into her official social media account.

She rarely posted, but her small circle of high-society acquaintances followed her diligently. More importantly, she knew for a fact that Tiffany Rose monitored her via a bitter, anonymous burner account.

Vivian uploaded the intimate selfie they had just taken, typing a caption wrapped in pure sugar and venom:

“Finally taking time for a vacation! My husband insisted on a spontaneous, romantic honeymoon. I guess the secret to keeping a twelve-year marriage fresh is a beautiful surprise like this. 🤍”

She hit publish.

Less than sixty seconds later, the expensive smartphone sitting on the marble vanity inside the bathroom began to ring incessantly.

The roar of the shower abruptly died. A moment later, Adrian emerged, a white towel slung carelessly around his hips. Without casting a single glance in her direction, he frantically grabbed his phone, his face pale as his fingers flew across the screen. He began dressing with frantic, erratic haste.

"Who’s calling?" Vivian asked, remaining casually leaned against the closet door, her tone light. "It sounds like a crisis."

"A major tech project at the firm just ran into a massive compliance issue," Adrian lied seamlessly, his voice perfectly smooth, the consummate CEO. He slipped into a bespoke, charcoal-grey suit jacket, looking every bit the distinguished billionaire. He gestured imperiously with his chin. "Vivian, come tie my necktie."

She walked over, stepping onto her tip-toes, her fingers expertly executing the Windsor knot with practiced precision. Though they were inches apart, their breaths mingling in the tight space, her heart remained as cold as a block of arctic ice.

"I’m incredibly sorry, Viv. I won't be able to stay for dinner tonight," Adrian murmured, his hand lightly brushing her cheek in a rehearsed gesture of affection.

With those tender, hollow words, he turned on his heel and stormed toward the exit.

In his frantic haste to escape the house and pacify his screaming mistress, his leather shoe violently clipped the trash can by the bedroom wall, knocking it over.

The hand-fired ceramic mirror she had discarded rolled halfway out onto the hardwood floor.

Adrian didn't even look down; his heavy leather dress shoe stepped directly onto the center of the clay piece. With a sharp, sickening crack, the mirror shattered into a silver web of a thousand jagged fractures beneath his weight.

Vivian’s breath caught in her throat. Her mind raced, preparing a defensive lie.

But Adrian merely frowned at the debris, his eyes entirely glued to his phone as he typed a frantic text to Tiffany. He stepped right over the ruins of their first date, complaining irritably as he reached the threshold:

"Don't leave the trash bin exposed like that, Vivian. It’s messy. Clean it up."

Bang.

The heavy mahogany door slammed shut.

Below the window, the violent roar of his sports car’s engine erupted, the tires screeching against the asphalt as he sped away into the evening.

The silence that followed felt like a resounding, physical slap to Vivian’s face. The terrifying anxiety she had felt seconds ago now seemed utterly ridiculous. The sacred token of love she had preserved and cherished through cancer and bankruptcy had long been forgotten by the man who wore her wedding ring. He didn't even recognize the shards.

The fractured mirror on the floor reflected her own broken face in a hundred disconnected pieces. It was the perfect, brutal metaphor for their twelve-year history.

The final, lingering trace of hesitation in her soul dissolved into nothingness.

Vivian knelt on the cold floor, carefully gathering the sharp ceramic shards into her bare hands. Just as she dropped the last piece into a heavy industrial waste bag, her phone vibrated against her thigh.

A text from Adrian:

“Vivian, the compliance issue with the European servers is incredibly complex. I won't be able to make the honeymoon trip work right now. Tell me where you want to go, and I’ll have my executive assistant book the private flights and a five-star villa. Just go enjoy yourself and don't worry about the firm.”

The man rarely sent messages of such length.

Vivian let out a cold, mocking laugh into the empty room. Tiffany Rose certainly has her ways. The girl had Adrian wrapped so tightly around her finger that a single social media post could make him abandon his wife in a blind panic.

Vivian didn't care. In fact, she welcomed the exile.

Holding the heavy trash bag in one hand, her pale fingers flew across the keyboard, sending back the perfect response of an obedient, submissive wife:

“I understand completely, honey. No need to arrange the flights for me; just ensure there’s enough liquidity in my private account so I don't have to worry about expenses. I'll text you my coordinates when I land.”

A mere three minutes later, a crisp chime echoed from her banking app.

Notification: Inbound Wire Transfer Approved. Amount: $1,000,000.00.

Vivian accepted the funds without a single micro-gram of guilt. That money belonged to her father's patents.

She had exactly thirty days left in this country, and she had an empire to burn down.
