"The Shattered Luna: Reborn in His Embers" Chapter 5
Chapter 5: Shadows in the Court
Valerius's POV
"Go to our fated mate. Now. Her wolf is projecting a wave of absolute, unadulterated fury," Owen’s voice echoed in my mind, his usually dominant tone frayed with an intense, protective anxiety.
I abruptly cut off my conversation with Barrett. "I have to handle something. I'll review the border patrol logs later ." My Beta offered a swift, understanding nod as I turned on my heel and took the grand staircase three steps at a time.
I slammed through the double doors of the master suite, and the scene before me turned my blood into pure ice. Lysandra and her collection of shallow sycophants had backed Aurelia against the far wall. But before I could intervene, Aurelia lunged forward with blinding, predatory speed. Her eyes were wide, her irises bleeding into a feral, volatile sapphire that made it entirely clear Karlee was at the helm.
She collided with Lysandra, driving her weight forward and smashing the high-ranking female's head directly into the solid plaster wall.
Lysandra crumpled instantly, hitting the hardwood floor completely unconscious. Aurelia stood over her, panting heavily, the solitary testament to the altercation being a fresh, deep talon laceration slicing down the contour of her cheek. Because of her prolonged malnutrition, her natural cellular regeneration was operating at a fraction of its proper speed, leaving the wound bleeding heavily—a sight that made my inner beast roar in agony.
Owen broke through our mental barrier, seizing absolute physical control of my frame. I unleashed a deafening, murderous growl that shook the windowpanes, my fangs bared as I advanced on Lysandra’s remaining minions. Terrified out of their minds by the lethal aura of their Alpha, the girls scrambled past each other, fleeing the room like dynamicless prey.
Aurelia's POV
A sharp, agonizing sting across my face yanked me violently from a beautiful dream.
I bolted upright with a ragged scream, my heart hammering against my ribs as the familiar panic of being back in Malakor’s cellar seized my throat. But as my vision cleared, I realized I wasn't in the dark. Standing at the foot of the bed was the same high-ranking female who had glared so venomously at me in the foyer.
"What are you doing in here?" I demanded, forcing my voice to hold a strength I didn't feel.
"Stay away from Valerius!" she shrieked, her features contorted into a mask of pure malice. "Valerius belongs to me, and I am going to ensure he seals our bond permanently tonight!"
A sudden, catastrophic wave of raw possessiveness surged from the deepest corners of my soul. Karlee broke through our mental seals, her territorial instincts taking absolute control of our physical form, and I gladly stepped back, relinquishing the reins.
Karlee drove an explosive punch straight into the girl's face, sending her stumbling backward in shock. Seizing the moment of disorientation, we sprung from the mattress, but the girl recovered fast enough to catch us with a sweeping claw strike across my face, reopening the healing laceration on my cheek. A sharp, burning pain flared across my skin. Before we could counter, she slammed our weight into the wall, her extended talons pressing dangerously close to my jugular. Panic threatened to choke me.

Suddenly, the heavy doors burst open, and Valerius stormed into the room.
Using the split-second distraction to our absolute advantage, Karlee drove her weight forward, throwing the girl off our frame and tackling her fiercely into the solid wall. The girl's head struck the plaster with a sickening crack. She let out a sharp gasp before her eyes rolled back, and she collapsed into a dead faint.
I turned my head to look at Valerius. His chocolate-brown eyes were locked onto the crimson blood oozing from the deep claw mark on my cheek, his massive chest heaving as a thunderous, vibratory growl tore from his throat. The raw, predatory dominance bleeding from his frame sent a sharp spike of dynamic fear straight down my spine, and an instant wave of regret washed over me. Lysandra’s remaining friends didn't hesitate; they fled past him into the corridor like bats escaping hell.
Valerius marched over to the unconscious girl, grabbed her by the collar, and callously dragged her body out into the hallway, his entire frame still vibrating with an irrepressible rage.
Quietly, I walked back to the expansive bed, sat on the edge of the mattress, and softly patted the empty space beside me, inviting him back into my orbit.
When Valerius stepped back inside from the adjoining bath, he had shed his torn shirt, wearing only a pair of low-slung athletic shorts. The sight of his bare, perfectly sculpted chest made me quickly avert my eyes, a warm blush creeping up my neck. He navigated the space quietly, sitting close beside me, and without a word, he pulled me against his chest, drawing in a long, deep breath of my scent to steady his lingering anger.
"You smell incredible," he murmured softly, the deep register of his voice causing a genuine smile to touch my lips.
"I smell exactly like you," I confessed quietly, casting a shy glance up through my lashes.
"Perfect," he replied, a shadow of a smile gracing his handsome features. "Come, let me show you to a permanent guest room... unless you prefer to remain here tonight ?" A subtle, hopeful glint flickered in his eyes.
I offered a quiet nod. "Would you truly not mind ?" I asked sheepishly, realizing how safe I felt wrapped in his presence.
He shook his head gently, and we slid beneath the heavy covers together. He pulled my back against his chest, and though I lay there somewhat awkwardly at first—terrified that some broken part of my nature would frighten him away or make him view me as an anomaly—I forced the toxic anxieties down, closed my eyes, and surrendered to sleep.
The next morning, an irritating, persistent itch across my cheek pulled me awake.
I opened my eyes to find a pair of warm, amused chocolate-brown eyes staring directly into mine. I leveled a heavy glare at Valerius, checking the sleek digital clock on the wall; it was exactly half-past freaking seven in the morning. I let out a low, groggy growl of annoyance, which only caused his eyes to widen in surprise before a quiet laugh escaped his lips.

"What possessed your right mind to wake me up at this ungodly hour?" I complained groggily.
Valerius raised his hand, his fingers moving toward my face to gently tuck a stray strand of brown hair behind my ear. But the sudden, upward movement triggered a primal memory of Malakor’s descending fist.
My vision fractured. I cowered back into the pillows instantly, throwing my arms up as panic seized my throat. "I'm sorry! I didn't mean to anger you, please don't hit me!" I whispered frantically, the words rushing out in a terrified torrent. "I shouldn't have spoken to an Alpha that way, I'm sorry, please!"
Valerius froze, his arm dropping to his side as his eyes turned incredibly stern, a low, pained growl escaping his chest.
"I will never hit you, Aurelia. Never," he promised, his voice vibrating with absolute certainty.
A profound wave of self-loathing hit my chest. I hated myself for projecting Malakor’s sins onto him, but fear was the only language my body had known for seven long years. The sheer, crushing sadness detailing his expression made my heart lurch with guilt. Slowly, I reached out, placing my palm gently against his jawline.
"I am so sorry," I whispered softly, my eyes pleading for him to understand. "It is... it is simply all I have ever known. I am trying to unlearn the patterns, but old habits die hard, and it has only been a single day. Please, give me time."
"I am trying to understand," Valerius replied, his voice thick with emotion as he leaned into my palm. "But it breaks something inside me to know that every single time I raise a hand to offer affection, your mind prepares for violence. I know you have endured horrors far deeper than my mind can even fathom, but I swear to you, I will spend the rest of my days picking up your shattered pieces and building beautiful memories to override the darkness."
A fragile smile touched my lips. "Not every memory is dark," I murmured quietly. "There was a time... before the clearing... where I knew what happiness felt like."
Valerius caught my hand, sliding his fingers through mine before pressing my palm flat against the center of his bare chest. Beneath my hand, the steady, rhythmic drumbeat of his heart pulsed with life.
"Tell me about the happy times," he requested, his eyes shining with a genuine interest.
I smiled, my gaze drifting into the past as the warmth of the memory filled the space. "When I was small, my parents took me to a massive amusement park. My father had just dragged us onto a water ride, and we were walking toward the drying stations. On the way, I got distracted by the magnificent scent of a candyfloss stand and ran off to buy a bag. The vendor was so kind he gave it to me for free, and I was absolutely thrilled—until I turned around and realized I was completely lost."
I paused, a genuine giggle escaping my throat as Valerius watched me intently. "A security guard—an incredibly tall male—found me crying. He simply smiled, hoisted me up onto his massive shoulders, and walked across the entire perimeter of the park until we finally spotted my frantic parents. And guess where they were standing?"
"Where?" Valerius prompted, his chocolate eyes shining brightly.
"Right at the candyfloss stand," I laughed, the pure joy of the memory making my eyes sparkle.
Valerius let out a soft, deep chuckle, the sound wrapping around my heart. "That is beautiful," he murmured, his gaze softening completely.
Instinctively, I leaned forward, wrapping my arms tightly around his neck. "Thank you," I whispered into his skin. "For pulling me from that forest. For saving my life. I owe you everything."
Valerius shook his head firmly, tightening his embrace until there was no space left between us. "You owe me absolutely nothing, Aurelia," he commanded, his tone dropping into a fierce, absolute certainty. "I would tear the world down for you. You are my fated mate, and you are finally home."
I pulled him closer, closing my eyes as a serene, beautiful smile settled onto my lips.
