"BENEATH THE MASK" Chapter 10 — Trigger
Chapter 10 — Trigger
The subway tunnels beneath Bucharest smelled like rust, rainwater, and old fire.
BLACK VEIL moved through the underground system in near-total darkness, flashlights cutting thin white beams through abandoned train tracks and collapsed concrete.
Somewhere above them, the city continued breathing normally.
Traffic.
Music.
Civilian life.
Down here, the world felt buried.
Eliana stepped carefully over broken rail debris while cold water dripped steadily from the tunnel ceiling.
Kane led point fifty feet ahead.
Mira covered rear movement.
Rami whispered prayers under his breath every few minutes like spiritual insurance.
And Kael—
Kael walked directly beside her tonight.
Too close.
Protective positioning again.
The realization no longer surprised her.
That was probably the problem.
“You’re staring at walls suspiciously,” she murmured quietly.
Kael’s flashlight swept across the tunnel.
“Acoustics changed.”
“That sounded deeply serial-killer-ish.”
“Left tunnel narrows ahead.”
“You see? Normal people would’ve said that instead.”
Something dangerously close to amusement flickered through his eyes again.
Tiny.
Gone instantly.
But increasingly frequent now.
Interesting.
Very dangerous.
The underground route had originally been designed as a temporary extraction corridor after intelligence reports indicated multiple BLACK VEIL surveillance leaks across the city.
Too many eyes above ground.
Too many compromised checkpoints.
So now they moved underground toward an abandoned Soviet communications station hidden beneath the eastern district.
Simple mission.
Which meant catastrophe was approximately seven minutes away.
Kane’s voice crackled softly through comms.
“Movement ahead.”
Everyone stopped instantly.
Weapons raised.
The tunnel stretched dark and empty ahead except for scattered maintenance lights flickering weakly overhead.
Eliana felt Kael shift slightly closer beside her.
One gloved hand brushed lightly against the small of her back.
Guiding.
Protective.
Automatic.
Then—
Gunfire exploded through the tunnels.
The sound hit like physical violence.
Deafening.
Brutal.
Rifle rounds screamed off concrete walls in blinding sparks while the confined underground space amplified every shot into chaos.
Rami shouted.
Mira returned fire immediately.
Kane disappeared into cover.
Eliana ducked instinctively behind a concrete support pillar—
And froze.
Because Kael hadn’t moved.
Not properly.
He stood several feet ahead of her in the middle of the tunnel.
Still armed.
Still upright.
But wrong.
Completely wrong.
Another burst of gunfire cracked through the station.
Kael flinched violently.
Not from the bullets.
From the sound.
His breathing changed instantly.
Sharp.
Uneven.
The overhead lights flickered once—
And suddenly Kael wasn’t in the subway anymore.
Eliana saw it happen in real time.
The shift.
His eyes unfocused slightly.
Body locked too rigid.
Weapon still raised but aim destabilizing microscopically.
Like his nervous system had been ripped backward somewhere else entirely.
Training room.
Interrogation chamber.
Gunfire.
Pain.
Conditioning.
Oh God.
PTSD trigger.
Severe.
“Kane!” Mira shouted. “Left side—”
More shots echoed through the tunnels.
The confined sound became unbearable.
Kael staggered backward half a step.
Just enough.
Enough for Eliana to realize something terrifying:
Ghost was panicking.
Not externally.
Not visibly to anyone else.
But internally—
His mind was collapsing under the trigger response while the rest of his training fought desperately to keep control.
Eliana moved before thinking.
Possibly becoming a pattern now.
She crossed the distance between them fast and grabbed the front of his tactical vest.
“Kael.”
No response.
His breathing worsened.
Eyes still locked somewhere far away.
Another burst of gunfire detonated through the tunnels.
Kael’s entire body jerked sharply.
Eliana’s stomach dropped.
Because she recognized this kind of dissociation.
Not weakness.
Conditioned trauma response.
The kind built deliberately into people until survival and terror became biologically inseparable.
“Kael.”
This time sharper.
Closer.
She grabbed his jaw hard enough to force his gaze downward toward her.
Those steel-grey eyes finally focused.
Barely.
Panic hid beneath the control now.
Raw.
Terrifying.
Not because he might hurt her.
Because he looked genuinely trapped inside his own head.
Eliana lowered her voice immediately.
“Look at me.”
Gunfire echoed again.
Kael flinched violently.
His breathing became dangerously uneven now.
Fast enough to hyperventilate.
The tunnel blurred into shouting and muzzle flashes around them.
But somehow this tiny space between them felt separate from all of it.
Eliana held his gaze firmly.
“You’re here,” she said quietly. “Not there.”
Kael’s jaw tightened beneath the mask.
No response.
But his eyes flickered slightly.
Recognition fighting through conditioning.
Good.
Good.
“Eliana—” Kane shouted from cover. “Move him!”
She ignored him.
Kael’s hands shook once around the rifle.
Tiny tremor.
Almost invisible.
But she saw it.
Of course she did.
“Breathe,” she ordered softly.
Another burst of gunfire exploded nearby.
Kael recoiled instinctively.
Then suddenly—
He grabbed her wrist.
Hard.
Not violent.
Desperate.
The force startled her briefly.
His gloved hand locked around her pulse like grounding himself physically was the only thing keeping him present.
Eliana didn’t pull away.
Didn’t panic.
Just tightened her fingers against his vest harder.
“That’s it,” she said quietly. “Stay with me.”
Kael stared at her.
Not Ghost.
Not BLACK VEIL’s weapon.
Just a man drowning quietly in memories no one else could see.
The realization hurt far more than expected.
Gunfire continued somewhere deeper in the tunnels.
Mira swore loudly in Russian.
Kane dropped another hostile.
But slowly—
Very slowly—
Kael’s breathing stabilized.
Not fully.
Enough.
His grip around her wrist remained crushingly tight.
Like letting go might send him falling backward into something horrific.
Eliana stayed exactly where she was.
Even when every survival instinct screamed at her to move.
Because the truly terrifying part wasn’t his panic.
It was this:
He trusted her enough to break in front of her.
Kael blinked hard once.
Then finally focused completely.
Awareness returned sharply to his eyes.
The tunnel.
The gunfire.
Her.
Everything hit him at once.
His grip loosened immediately.
“Eliana—”
A bullet shattered concrete inches beside them.
Kael reacted instantly now.
Training reasserting itself violently.
One arm wrapped around her waist while he dragged her behind the pillar just before another round tore through the space where they’d been standing.
His breathing still sounded rough beneath the mask.
But functional.
Controlled enough to survive again.
Kane slid into cover beside them seconds later.
“You with me now, Ghost?”
Kael chambered another round.
“Yes.”
Too fast.
Too controlled.
Kane noticed.
Of course he did.
But before he could say anything—
A new voice crackled quietly through BLACK VEIL comms.
Smooth.
Male.
Unfamiliar.
“Interesting.”
Everyone froze briefly.
Kael’s eyes sharpened instantly.
“Who the fuck is this?” Kane snapped.
Static crackled softly.
Then:
“Agent Silas Reed,” the voice replied calmly. “Intelligence oversight.”
Eliana’s blood went cold.
Kael’s gaze snapped toward her immediately.
Too fast.
Too precise.
Like he’d already noticed the tiny shift in her pulse.
Dangerous.
Very dangerous.
Silas continued calmly through comms:
“And Eliana Vale appears significantly more valuable than her file suggested.”
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Then the transmission cut.
Kane swore.
Mira looked murderous.
And Kael—
Kael looked at Eliana with something new in his eyes now.
Not distrust.
Not yet.
Recognition.
Like pieces were beginning to align into a shape he wasn’t going to like.
But before anyone could speak—
Enemy movement surged deeper in the tunnels.
Kael immediately shifted back into combat posture.
Weapon raised.
Protective position instinctively placing Eliana behind him again.
Yet this time—
His free hand found hers briefly in the darkness.
And for the first time since meeting him—
Kael held on.
