"BENEATH THE MASK" Chapter 12 — Breathing Distance
Chapter 12 — Breathing Distance
The underground escape tunnels beneath the Serbian border were never designed for comfort.
Or oxygen.
Or psychologically stable experiences.
Eliana crouched low while squeezing through another section of narrow concrete passage barely wide enough for one person at a time.
Cold water dripped steadily from rusted pipes overhead.
The tunnel ceiling pressed close enough to feel suffocating.
Behind them, distant voices echoed faintly through the underground corridors.
Enemy patrols.
Too close.
Much too close.
Kane’s whispered instructions crackled softly through comms ahead of them.
“Lights off from this point forward.”
Darkness swallowed the tunnel instantly.
Absolute.
Complete.
Eliana’s pulse kicked harder beneath her ribs.
Not fear exactly.
More like her nervous system objecting violently to enclosed spaces and imminent death simultaneously.
Reasonable reaction overall.
Ahead of her, Kael moved silently through the darkness like he belonged inside it.
One gloved hand occasionally touched the tunnel wall for orientation.
The other remained near his weapon.
Always ready.
Always alert.
Even here.
Especially here.
The tunnel narrowed sharply around the next bend.
Kane’s voice lowered through comms:
“Single-file passage ahead. Quiet movement only.”
Wonderful.
Eliana exhaled softly and stepped forward—
Then immediately lost footing on wet concrete.
Her shoulder slammed lightly into the tunnel wall.
The sound echoed louder than expected.
Everyone froze.
Voices somewhere behind them stopped abruptly.
Silence.
Then distant footsteps shifted direction.
Toward them.
“Move,” Kael whispered sharply.
He grabbed Eliana’s wrist and pulled her through the narrowing corridor just as flashlight beams swept faintly across the far tunnel intersection behind them.
The space ahead tightened brutally.
Barely enough room to stand.
Concrete pressing close on both sides.
Darkness thick enough to feel physical.
Kael shoved open a rusted maintenance hatch hidden along the tunnel wall and pulled her inside seconds before enemy patrol lights crossed the main passage.
The hatch shut quietly behind them.
Silence dropped instantly.
Heavy.
Breathless.
The hidden compartment was tiny.
Old maintenance storage maybe.
No windows.
No light.
Barely enough space for two people standing.
Which unfortunately meant—
Eliana ended up pressed directly against Kael’s chest.
Every inch of her body instantly became aware of this fact.
Dangerous.
Very dangerous.
Kael braced one arm against the wall beside her head while listening for movement outside the hatch.
His body remained tense.
Alert.
Protective.
And devastatingly close.
Eliana could feel the heat beneath his tactical jacket despite the freezing underground air.
Could hear the controlled rhythm of his breathing beneath the mask.
Could feel his heartbeat faintly through layers of fabric where her chest pressed accidentally against his.
This seemed medically inappropriate.
Outside the compartment, enemy patrols moved slowly through the tunnels.
Voices echoed closer now.
Flashlight beams slipped briefly beneath the cracks of the hatch door.
Eliana instinctively shifted nearer toward Kael.
There was nowhere else to go.
Not in a space this small.
Kael’s free hand immediately settled against her waist to steady her balance.
The contact froze both of them.
Always this.
Always electricity beneath restraint.
Eliana’s breath caught softly.
Kael’s grip tightened once.
Tiny movement.
Instinctive.
Then held there.
Firm.
Protective.
Outside, boots scraped across concrete.
One soldier stopped directly beside the hidden compartment.
Eliana’s pulse spiked violently.
Kael reacted immediately.
His hand slid higher against her back while the other pressed gently against the side of her head, guiding her closer against him silently.
Not romantic.
Tactical.
That somehow made it infinitely worse.
Her face ended up half-hidden against his neck.
And suddenly—
She could smell him clearly.
Smoke.
Rain.
Gun oil.
And something warmer underneath she couldn’t name anymore without becoming emotionally compromised.
The soldier outside spoke sharply in Russian.
Another answered farther down the tunnel.
Flashlight beams crossed beneath the hatch again.
Eliana stayed perfectly still against Kael’s chest while trying very hard not to think about:
His hand spanning her waist.
The rough fabric beneath her fingertips.
The impossible steadiness of him.
Dangerous priorities during near-death situations.
Kael lowered his head slightly toward hers.
Close enough now that she felt warm breath ghost faintly across her temple through the mask.
“Breathe slower,” he whispered.
The problem was—
She wasn’t struggling to breathe because of the soldiers.
Eliana closed her eyes briefly.
Excellent.
Now she was having psychological crises underground.
Outside, footsteps finally continued past the compartment.
The patrol moved deeper into the tunnels slowly.
But neither of them moved yet.
Too risky.
Too loud.
Which meant they remained trapped together in darkness and breathing distance.
Wonderful.
Eliana tilted her head back slightly.
Mistake.
Huge mistake.
Because now she could barely see him in the dark.
Only fragments.
The outline of his face.
The shape of his shoulders blocking the tiny light slipping beneath the hatch.
And his eyes.
God.
His eyes.
Steel-grey even in darkness.
Focused entirely on her now.
Not the tunnel.
Not the mission.
Her.
The realization sent heat sharply through her chest.
Neither spoke.
The silence between them changed slowly.
Shifted.
No longer tactical.
Something else now.
Something restrained too tightly.
Kael’s hand remained against her waist.
Not moving.
Not letting go either.
Eliana became abruptly aware that if she leaned upward even slightly—
The mask would brush her mouth.
Her pulse betrayed her immediately.
Kael noticed.
Of course he did.
His breathing changed almost imperceptibly.
Rougher.
Lower.
And suddenly Eliana understood something terrifying:
He was thinking about it too.
Outside the hatch, distant footsteps faded farther away.
Safe now.
Probably.
Neither moved.
Of course not.
Because apparently both of them had lost the ability to function normally within six inches of each other.
Kael lowered his forehead slowly against hers.
The contact happened so gently it almost hurt.
No mask barrier there.
Just warmth.
Pressure.
Stillness.
Eliana’s breath caught softly.
His eyes closed briefly.
Like this tiny moment of contact exhausted him more than violence ever had.
God.
That realization nearly destroyed her.
Kael stayed there for one suspended second.
Then another.
His hand tightened slightly against her waist.
Not possession.
Restraint.
Like he was physically holding himself back from something.
Eliana’s fingers curled unconsciously against the front of his jacket.
The temptation between them felt unbearable now.
Not sudden passion.
Worse.
Accumulation.
Weeks of tension.
Sleepless nights.
Protective instincts.
Touch deprivation.
Loneliness recognizing itself in another person.
Neither kissed the other.
That was the terrifying part.
Both wanted to.
Both knew it instantly.
And both restrained themselves anyway.
Because once this line broke—
Nothing between them would survive unchanged.
Kael opened his eyes slowly.
Eliana realized with sudden painful clarity that he looked genuinely conflicted.
Not tactical conflict.
Emotional.
Like wanting something scared him more than bullets ever had.
Outside, Kane’s voice finally crackled softly through comms:
“Tunnel clear.”
Reality slammed back instantly.
Kael stepped backward first.
Fast enough to create distance.
Not fast enough to hide the damage already done.
Eliana’s body immediately missed the warmth.
Catastrophic.
Kael reached for the hatch without looking directly at her.
Armor rebuilding itself piece by piece.
But before opening it—
He paused.
Still facing away.
And quietly—
Roughly—
Said:
“You should stay away from me.”
Eliana stared at the back of his mask in darkness.
Then softly replied:
“You stopped being convincing weeks ago.”
