"THE THINGS SHE FORGOT" Chapter 28
Chapter 28
Evelyn’s hand remained against Adrian’s face for only a few seconds.
But it was enough to ruin whatever distance they still pretended existed between them.
Rain battered the retreat windows while weak emergency lights flickered softly overhead, throwing unstable shadows across flooded archive floors and shelves filled with ruined patient records. Somewhere deeper inside the building, old pipes groaned beneath the storm.
Adrian didn’t move away from her touch.
That somehow felt more intimate than if he had kissed her.
Always restraint.
Always letting her decide first.
The realization hurt in ways she still didn’t fully understand.
“You should hate me,” he said quietly.
Evelyn let out a faint, exhausted laugh under her breath.
“That sentence is starting to lose impact.”
But her voice shook slightly anyway.
Because standing this close to him now felt unbearable.
Not only because of attraction.
Because memory kept trying to surface through proximity.
Rain.
His hands wrapping a blanket around her shoulders.
A younger version of herself half-asleep on a staircase while Adrian sat beside her through a storm.
Fragments.
Never enough to hold onto completely.
Evelyn lowered her hand slowly from his face.
“You said Victor erased emotional connections,” she murmured. “But you just let me believe you did it.”
Adrian looked away briefly toward the ruined tape shelves.
“I didn’t stop him.”
“That’s not the same thing.”
“No,” he admitted softly. “It isn’t.”
The honesty cut through her again.
Not because it excused him.
Because he never tried to.
Outside, thunder cracked violently across the mountains surrounding Black Hollow.
The archive lights flickered harder this time.
Then stabilized again.
Evelyn crossed back toward Lena’s tape recorder slowly, trying to steady her thoughts. The room still carried the faint smell of mold, wet concrete, and old magnetic tape deteriorating with age.
Lena’s voice remained frozen somewhere inside those recordings.
Waiting.
“She knew,” Evelyn whispered.
Adrian watched her carefully. “About Victor?”
“About all of it.”
Rainwater dripped steadily through the ceiling into flooded sections of the archive floor.
Evelyn crouched beside the scattered files near the tape recorder and began searching through water-damaged folders more aggressively now.
Not fear anymore.
Need.
Because for the first time since Blackwater Bridge, the shape of the conspiracy surrounding her life felt real enough to touch.
Victor Cross.
Memory conditioning.
Storm-triggered dissociation.
And Lena had uncovered it before she disappeared.
“There has to be more,” Evelyn murmured.
Adrian stepped closer.
“Evelyn—”
“She hid things.” Evelyn flipped through another ruined folder. “That’s what Lena always did when she thought someone was dangerous.”
The sentence hung briefly between them.
Dangerous.
Not
is dangerous
.
Thought someone was dangerous.
Adrian heard the distinction too.
Evelyn noticed it in the slight shift of his expression.
Then her fingers stopped.
Paper.
Dry paper.
One intact journal page hidden carefully inside a cracked cassette case.
Her pulse accelerated instantly.
Evelyn unfolded it slowly.
Lena’s handwriting.
Sharp.
Hurried.
Uneven in places.
If anything happens to me, Victor knows why.
Cold spread immediately through her chest.
Adrian moved beside her quietly.
Evelyn kept reading.
Eve’s blackouts were never random. They trained her to disconnect during storms because she remembered too much.
Rain hammered violently overhead now.
Another line:
Adrian thinks his father stopped after Black Hollow closed. He’s wrong.
Adrian went still beside her.
Evelyn looked up sharply.
“You didn’t know.”
“No.”
For the first time tonight, genuine shock crossed his face without restraint.
That frightened her.
Because Adrian rarely looked unprepared for truth.
Evelyn looked back down at the page.
The final paragraph had been written darker, as though Lena pressed hard enough to nearly tear the paper.
Victor kept recordings from the children with “attachment retention.” He believed emotional bonds interfered with memory suppression.
A terrible pressure began building slowly inside Evelyn’s chest.
Attachment retention.
She thought suddenly of Adrian sitting beside her through storms.
Staying awake with her.
Letting her hold his hand.
Kind hands.
That was what she remembered most clearly.
Not treatment rooms.
Not Victor.
Adrian’s hands.
Steady.
Warm.
Patient.
The memories surfaced in flashes now—
Her younger self shaking violently during thunder while Adrian quietly passed her a cup of tea.
His fingers brushing hers.
Him saying softly:
You’re here with me. Stay here.
Evelyn closed her eyes briefly.
“He tried to anchor me,” she whispered.
Adrian looked at her carefully.
“What?”
“Victor wanted me detached.” Her voice trembled slightly. “But you kept trying to pull me back.”
The ache that crossed Adrian’s face then looked almost unbearable.
“I thought if you stayed connected to someone, the conditioning wouldn’t fully work.”
Rain crashed against the windows hard enough to shake the glass.
Evelyn stared at him.
“You were trying to save me.”
“I was trying to keep parts of you alive.”
The sentence hollowed the room.
Not romantic.
Worse.
Real.
Before Evelyn could respond, a metallic slam echoed violently somewhere above them.
Both of them turned sharply.
Then another sound followed.
Heavy.
Mechanical.
The retreat lights flickered hard.
And suddenly a loud locking mechanism echoed through the building corridors.
Adrian’s expression changed instantly.
“The front doors.”
Evelyn’s pulse spiked.
Another metallic slam thundered somewhere upstairs.
Then silence.
Complete silence except for rain.
Adrian crossed quickly toward the archive hallway.
The emergency lights dimmed briefly again before stabilizing into weak red illumination.
Someone had sealed the building from outside.
And this time—
they weren’t alone inside Black Hollow anymore.
