"Beyond the Ash: The Luna’s Rebirth" Chapter 21
The rain began to fall in heavy, silent drops. Lucien stayed at Lyra's side as the three remaining rogues closed the circle. Darius remained in the shadows, his yellow eyes fixed on Lyra's hands.
"The magic is not a strike, Lyra," Lucien murmured. He did not look at the wolves. He looked at her eyes. "It is an exhale. You are holding it in your chest like a secret. Let it move to your palms."
He adjusted his grip on her waist, his thumb pressing into the side of her ribs. "Breathe in. Feel the ley lines under the moss. They are waiting for you to ask."
Lyra closed her eyes for a second. She inhaled the scent of sandalwood and wet stone. She opened her eyes. They were pure, molten silver.
Two rogues lunged at once from opposite sides.
"Now," Lucien whispered.
Lyra didn't swing her arms. She opened her hands. She pushed her breath out.
A wave of silver light moved from her palms. It did not hum; it roared. The energy hit the two wolves mid-air. They did not fall; they were thrown. Their bodies hit the oak trees with a sound like breaking timber. They did not get up.
The third rogue turned to run.
"Do not let the thread break," Lucien said. He stayed behind her, his chest near her shoulder. "Finish the line."
Lyra pointed her finger toward the retreating wolf. A spark of silver jumped from her nail. It hit the rogue in the back of the neck. The wolf collapsed into the ferns, its body twitching once before going still.
Darius stepped out from the shadows. He looked at the bodies of his men. He looked at Lucien. He looked at Lyra.
"This is not a marriage, Vane," Darius said. His voice was a rasp. "It is a siege. You cannot hide a supernova in a library forever."
He turned and shifted into a massive brown wolf. He did not attack. He moved into the deep brush and disappeared.
Lucien did not follow. He turned toward Lyra. The silver in her eyes was steady. She looked at her fingers.
The earth shook. A deep sound came from the ground.
Lyra lowered her hand. The silver in her eyes reflected the dark woods. She did not look at the bodies. She looked toward a cedar tree two hundred yards away.
She stared at a specific branch. She did not move. She did not flinch. She watched the shadow until it shifted.
Lucien looked toward the tree. Then he looked at her.
"They will tell him," Lyra said. Her voice was steady.
"Let them," Lucien replied.
He walked to her and took her hand. He held it in his. He led her back toward the manor. His shadow overlapped hers on the wet moss.
Two hundred yards to the North, a scout from House Ashveil lowered a lens. He sat in the hollow of the cedar tree. He picked up a leather-bound device. He tapped out a coded frequency.

Target located. Vane protection confirmed. Power level: High. Pure silver awakening.
The message moved North. It went through relay towers and pack-bonds until it reached House Ashveil.
In the Great Hall of the North, the air smelled of soot and cold iron.
Cassian Ashveil sat at a table of obsidian. His black hair was damp. His shirt was open at the collar. He looked at a map of the continent.
A door at the end of the hall opened. Rowan walked across the stone floor. He held a sheet of vellum.
Cassian did not look up. "Is she at the border?"
"She is in the Vane estate, Alpha," Rowan said. He placed the paper on the obsidian. "Vane protection is confirmed. Her eyes are silver. The scout reports an apocalyptic energy release."
Cassian's hand closed into a fist. His knuckles were white. He read the report. He stared at the words pure molten silver.
He stood up. The chair made a screeching sound on the stone. He grabbed a fur cloak and put it over his shoulders.
"Ready the scouts," Cassian said.
"Alpha," Rowan said. He stepped into the path. "The Vane borders are reinforced. If you cross them, it is an act of war. The report says she is different. She is not the woman who left."
"I know what I lost," Cassian said. He pushed past the Beta. "I am going to the mountain pass. I will cross into the South before the moon sets."
"She may reject you," Rowan said.
Cassian stopped at the door. He looked back.
"Let her," he said.
Back in the southern manor, the rain continued to fall. It washed the silver dust into the soil. The lights of the Vane estate appeared through the trees.
Lyra walked into the house. Lucien closed the door.
The hallway was warm and smelled of lavender. Lyra stopped. She looked at her hands.
Lucien removed his coat. He dropped it. He stepped toward her. He unbuttoned the top of her wool coat. He moved with a slow pace.
"The bath is hot," Lucien said.
He pulled the coat from her shoulders. He set it on a chair. He reached for her hand and looked at her fingernails. They were still sharp.
"The power will settle," he said.
He led her toward the stairs. He walked beside her. His shoulder brushed hers.
They reached the door to her suite. Lucien stopped at the threshold. He looked at her eyes. They were silver, reflecting the light from the lamps.
He reached out. He traced the line of her jaw with his thumb.
"Sleep," he said.
He did not wait. He turned and walked down the hallway. His boots made a rhythmic sound.
Lyra entered her room. A fire was in the hearth. She walked to the window. She looked south. The rain hit the glass.
She wrapped herself in a white silk robe. She sat on the edge of the bed. She looked at the door.
The house was quiet.
She lay down. She pulled the blankets to her chin. The scent of sandalwood from Lucien's hands stayed on her skin.
She closed her eyes. The sound of the wind was the only thing in the room.
She stayed still until the dawn.
In the morning, the sun hit the floorboards. Lyra stood up. She walked to the mirror. Her eyes were silver. She looked at her reflection. She did not turn away.
She dressed in a gown of black silk. She walked to the library.
Lucien was at the desk. He wore a fresh shirt. He looked up.
He stood. He walked to her.
"The reports from the border are in," Lucien said.
"And?"
"Darius is gone, but he is gathering the Wastes," he said.
He reached for her hand. He held it.
"The North is still silent," Lucien said.
"Let it stay that way," Lyra replied.
She sat at the desk. She opened a book. Lucien sat beside her. They worked as the sun moved across the room.
