"Beyond the Ash: The Luna’s Rebirth" Chapter 46
House Vane
Wrong silence.
The Vane estate had grown used to the strange fluctuations surrounding Lyra over the past weeks—the sudden temperature shifts, silver light flickering through corridors at night, wolves freezing mid-step whenever her Pulse surged too strongly. But this was different.
The entire eastern wing felt empty.
Lucien noticed it before the guards did.
He looked up from the war table in the lower strategy chamber just as every candle along the western wall extinguished simultaneously. A cold pulse rolled through the floor beneath his boots, subtle but unmistakable.
His expression changed instantly.
"Where is she?"
No one answered quickly enough.
Lucien was already moving.
He crossed the corridor fast enough that two servants flattened themselves against the walls to avoid him. By the time he reached Lyra's chambers, the silver fracture burned into the balcony floor had already begun cooling at the edges.
The doors stood open.
Rain flooded through shattered windows.
And Lyra was gone.
For one dangerous second, Lucien didn't move at all.
His eyes tracked the room mechanically:empty bed, extinguished candles, wind tearing through silk curtains, silver scorch-marks splitting the marble.
The realization settled cold beneath his ribs.
"She left willingly."
Behind him, several Vane guards exchanged nervous looks. One of the younger scouts stepped cautiously toward the balcony.
"Alpha—"
"Out."
The word came quietly.
That made it worse.
Everyone left immediately.
Lucien walked slowly toward the balcony edge, staring down at the cliffs below while rain soaked through the shoulders of his dark shirt. His jaw tightened once when he noticed the faint silver residue lingering in the air.
A Pulse trail.
She had split the ley lines open directly.
Even now the atmosphere still vibrated from it.
Lucien closed his eyes briefly.
Darius had finally forced the exact outcome he wanted.
And Lyra—
Lyra had gone to him alone.
A sharp crack split through the corridor behind him moments later.
Cassian.
The northern Alpha entered the chamber like a storm dragged inside human skin. Rainwater dripped from his black military coat while several northern officers struggled to keep pace behind him.
The moment he saw the empty room, he stopped.
Everything in him went still.
Dangerously still.
"Where is she?"
Lucien didn't answer immediately.
That silence told Cassian enough.
The atmosphere inside the room changed instantly.
Northern Alpha aura flooded the chamber hard enough to rattle the broken windows. One of the younger Vane guards physically staggered backward under the pressure while frost spread briefly across the marble floor.
Cassian crossed the room in three strides and grabbed the silver-burned balcony railing.
His wolf recognized the scent immediately.
Lyra.
Silver Pulse.
Storm residue.
Gone.
The realization hit violently enough that his breathing turned uneven for one brief second.
"When?" he asked.
"Less than an hour."
Cassian looked toward the eastern mountains beyond the storm.
Toward the Wastes.
His jaw tightened hard enough to pulse visibly beneath skin.

"She went to him."
Not a question.
Lucien leaned one hand against the cracked strategy table nearby. "Because Darius infected half the North specifically to drag against the Pulse."
"And we let her believe she had to carry it alone."
The words came rougher than expected.
Lucien looked at Cassian sharply then.
Because old Cassian would've said:"She disobeyed."
Not: we failed her.
Interesting.
Another burst of thunder rolled across the coastline.
Several officers entered behind Cassian carrying fresh reports from the Eastern Pass.
"Alpha," one of the northern Betas began urgently, "the rogue companies pushed another assault through Frost-Reach. We need immediate reinforcement at the ridge before sunrise—"
Cassian turned toward him slowly.
"What's the current infantry count?"
The Beta froze slightly at the tone.
"Five northern divisions holding the upper pass. Two more arriving from Iron-Hold by dawn."
"Then they hold."
The room went still.
"Alpha," another officer said carefully, "if you leave command now, the eastern corridor may collapse."
Cassian looked back toward the rain-soaked horizon beyond the cliffs.
Toward Lyra.
For years, duty would have answered this decision automatically.
The North first.
Always the North first.
But now all he could see was Lyra standing alone inside the storm while the Silver Pulse tore itself apart around her.
And somewhere beyond the mountains—
Darius waiting for her.
Cassian exhaled once through his nose.
One of the generals stepped forward immediately. "My lord—"
"If the pass breaks," Cassian interrupted quietly, "fall back to the second ridge and burn the lower corridor behind you."
The general stared at him in disbelief.
"That leaves the eastern villages exposed."
"Yes."
"Thousands may die."
Cassian finally looked at him directly.
"And she'll die if I stay here."
Silence.
Then:
"Then let the North survive without me for once."
Lucien watched the room change around those words.
For the first time since this war began, Lucien saw the exact moment Cassian stopped behaving like an Alpha ruler—and started behaving like a man terrified of losing someone he loved.
Then Lucien crossed toward the eastern wall and pulled a black dagger from beneath the strategy maps.
He tossed it directly toward Cassian.
Cassian caught it instantly.
Lucien's pale blue eyes lifted toward him steadily.
"The southern blockade will clear a route through Blackwater Forest," he said quietly. "My scouts will guide you to the cathedral perimeter."
One of the Vane officers looked stunned. "Alpha—"
Lucien ignored him.
Cassian stared at the dagger briefly before meeting Lucien's gaze.
Then Cassian turned and walked toward the storm.
