"The Ghost Who Forgot How to Kill" Chapter 36

The basement disappeared into gunfire and shattered glass.

Emergency lights burst overhead one after another while Dominic unloaded automatic fire from the upper catwalk screaming something deeply unprofessional into comms.

Kane’s voice cracked through the radio immediately.

“DOMINIC WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT.”

“Tactical entrance.”

“THAT WAS A WINDOW.”

Cassian moved before the echoes finished.

Viktor fired once toward Evie.

Cassian crossed the flooded concrete floor fast enough the shot hit steel piping instead of her shoulder.

Water exploded upward around his boots.

Then the rifle stock slammed into Viktor’s wrist hard enough to send the pistol skidding across the floor into darkness.

Viktor staggered backward.

Cassian hit him again immediately.

No wasted movement.

No speech.

Just violence sharpened into something frighteningly personal.

The basement lights flickered violently overhead while alarms screamed through the compound above them.

Evie pulled hard against the restraints.

“Cassian!”

Viktor recovered fast enough to drive a knife upward beneath Cassian’s ribs.

The blade caught body armor instead of flesh.

Cassian grabbed Viktor by the throat and drove him backward through a support pillar hard enough to crack concrete.

The sound echoed through the basement.

Viktor laughed once through blood.

Actually laughed.

“There he is.”

Cassian hit him again.

This time Viktor stopped talking.

Dominic dropped from the upper level beside the flooded stairwell holding two rifles and visible excitement.

“GOOD NEWS,” he yelled over the alarms. “I BROUGHT MORE POOR DECISIONS.”

Cassian never looked away from Viktor.

“Get her out.”

Dominic turned toward Evie immediately.

“Yes sir. Emotionally terrifying sir.”

He crossed the basement fast, cutting restraints loose while gunfire continued upstairs through the compound.

Evie barely noticed.

Her eyes stayed fixed on Cassian.

On the blood running down his sleeve.

On the way his hands shook slightly now that the adrenaline had somewhere to go.

Viktor coughed hard against the concrete pillar.

Cassian still held him upright by the front of his jacket.

Rainwater dripped steadily through broken pipes overhead while red emergency lights pulsed across the flooded floor.

“You built your whole life around fear,” Viktor rasped. “And she still got inside it.”

Cassian’s grip tightened.

Viktor smiled weakly through blood.

“That’s what kills you in the end.”

Cassian looked at him for one long second.

Then let him go.

Viktor collapsed hard into the water beneath the flashing emergency lights.

Not mercy.

Dismissal.

Cassian turned immediately toward Evie.

And stopped.

The sight of her standing there untied somehow hit harder than the entire compound assault.

Bruised.

Exhausted.

Still alive.

Still looking at him like he came back from somewhere terrible.

Dominic quietly looked between both of them.

Then pointed toward the stairs.

“I’m gonna go handle literally anything else.”

Nobody answered.

He disappeared upstairs immediately.

The basement finally quieted in uneven pieces after that.

Distant gunfire still echoed through the upper floors.

Alarms still screamed.

Water still dripped through concrete overhead.

But down there beneath the ruined emergency lights, everything narrowed into the space between them.

Evie crossed the flooded floor first.

Slowly.

Like sudden movement might break something already hanging by a thread.

Cassian stayed completely still while she approached.

Blood streaked one side of his jaw now.

His knuckles looked split open.

Rainwater darkened his clothes almost black beneath the flashing red lights.

He looked exhausted enough to collapse standing.

Evie stopped directly in front of him.

Close enough now to see the tremor running through his hands.

Not fear.

Aftershock.

Cassian opened his mouth slightly like he meant to say something.

Nothing came out.

Evie stared at him another second.

Then reached up carefully and touched the blood near his face with trembling fingers.

Cassian closed his eyes immediately.

The contact landed too deep.

“You came,” she whispered.

The sentence broke him.

Not dramatically.

Not all at once.

Evie saw it happen slowly instead.

The brutal control holding him together since the livestream began finally gave way piece by piece beneath her hands.

Cassian lowered his forehead against hers with one shaking breath.

His shoulders tightened hard like his body had forgotten how to survive this kind of relief.

Evie wrapped both arms around him instantly.

Cassian folded into the embrace with terrifying force.

One arm locked around her waist.

The other braced hard against her back like he still expected someone to rip her away again if he loosened his grip even slightly.

His breathing turned uneven against her shoulder.

Evie felt the tremor running through him before she understood what it meant.

Cassian was shaking.

Not from injury.

Not from cold.

From the simple fact that she was alive and touching him and no longer tied to a chair beneath Viktor’s hands.

Evie held him tighter.

“It’s okay,” she whispered quickly. “Hey. Hey, I’m here.”

Cassian buried his face briefly against the side of her neck.

The movement felt less like comfort and more like collapse.

Years of restraint finally tearing somewhere deep enough he couldn’t force it closed again.

“I thought—”

His voice broke apart halfway through.

Evie’s chest tightened painfully.

“You don’t have to say it.”

But Cassian pulled back just enough to look at her.

His expression looked raw now in a way she’d never seen before.

No walls.

No tactical calm.

No distance left to hide behind.

Just a man standing in flooded concrete trying unsuccessfully to hold himself together after almost losing the person he loved.

“I can’t do this again,” he said quietly.

Evie touched his face carefully between both hands.

“You won’t.”

Cassian shook his head once.

Not disagreement.

Fear.

“You don’t understand.” His voice roughened further. “When I saw him touch you—”

He stopped.

Couldn’t finish.

Evie looked at him for a long second while emergency lights pulsed red across the water around them.

Then she kissed him.

Softly this time.

No desperation.

No fighting.

Just enough to stop the words before they destroyed him further.

Cassian made a quiet sound against her mouth that almost hurt to hear.

Relief.

Grief.

Love.

All tangled together now beyond separation.

When the kiss broke, he stayed close enough their foreheads still touched.

Evie brushed wet hair back from his face carefully.

“You know what your problem is?” she whispered.

Cassian’s eyes stayed fixed on hers.

“You keep surviving things alone until your body forgets somebody might stay.”

The basement lights flickered weakly overhead.

Cassian looked at her like he wanted to believe that more than anything else in the world.

Upstairs, another explosion rattled the pipes.

Neither of them moved.

For the first time in years, Cassian stopped holding himself like a man preparing to lose something.
