"The Mafia King’s Collateral Girl" Chapter 30

“Ivy.”

Lucien’s voice broke on her name.

Not cracked.

Not rough.

Broken.

The SUV door hung twisted beside him while rain hammered across the bridge hard enough to blur city lights into silver streaks. Gunfire still echoed faintly somewhere behind them, distant now, drowned beneath adrenaline and panic and the violent sound of Lucien breathing.

Ivy stared at him from the backseat.

Blood covered half his face.

More soaked through the shoulder of his black coat.

Rainwater dripped steadily from dark hair into wild gray eyes that no longer looked human enough to hide emotion properly.

And for the first time since meeting him—

Lucien looked terrified.

Not angry.

Not violent.

Terrified.

“Ivy.”

He said her name again softer this time while reaching toward her carefully.

Like she might disappear.

Like touching her too fast would break reality apart.

The realization hit her harder than the kidnapping had.

The guard beside her groaned weakly against shattered glass.

Lucien’s expression changed instantly.

Cold.

Murderous.

The shift happened so fast it made Ivy’s stomach drop.

Lucien grabbed the man by the throat before he fully moved.

“Lucien—”

Too late.

He slammed the guard’s head violently against the SUV frame.

Once.

Twice.

The sound cracked sharply through the rain.

Blood sprayed across Lucien’s already ruined shirt.

The guard stopped moving completely.

Silence crashed hard afterward.

Ivy stared at him.

Lucien froze too.

One hand still wrapped around the unconscious man’s throat while rain streamed down his face like silver blood beneath bridge lights.

Then slowly—

very slowly—

he looked back at her.

And Ivy saw it happen.

The realization.

What she just witnessed.

What he became for her tonight.

Lucien released the guard immediately like touching him suddenly burned.

“Ivy—”

His voice sounded wrecked now.

Actual wreckage.

He stepped closer carefully through broken glass and rainwater flooding the SUV floor.

“Ivy, look at me.”

She already was.

That was the terrifying part.

Blood dripped steadily down Lucien’s hand while city sirens screamed somewhere far behind them. Matteo shouted orders across the bridge. Men moved through rain carrying weapons and bodies and panic.

But inside the SUV—

everything narrowed down to Lucien kneeling in front of her with destruction written across his skin.

“I’m okay,” Ivy whispered automatically.

Lucien made a sound under his breath that almost sounded angry.

“No.”

His hands shook violently while reaching toward her face.

Not from cold.

Fear.

Pure fear.

“You’re bleeding,” Ivy whispered.

“I don’t care.”

The answer came too fast.

Too honest.

Lucien’s hands cupped her face carefully now.

Cold fingers.

Shaking fingers.

His eyes moved frantically across her features like he physically needed proof she remained alive.

“You’re okay,” he whispered.

Again.

Again.

Like repetition might make it real.

Ivy’s chest tightened painfully.

“Lucien.”

Then suddenly—

he broke.

Not dramatically.

Worse.

His forehead dropped hard against hers while one shaking breath escaped him so unevenly it almost sounded like pain.

And Ivy realized—

Lucien Moretti had been holding himself together entirely through violence for the past hour.

Now that she was safe—

nothing remained.

His grip tightened slightly against her jaw.

“You screamed.”

The words came rough.

Destroyed.

“I heard you scream.”

Ivy’s eyes burned instantly.

Rain hammered around them.

Lucien stayed close enough that she could feel his breathing unraveling in real time.

“I thought he took you away from me.”

There it was.

The real terror.

Not losing power.

Not losing control.

Losing her.

Ivy reached slowly toward his face.

Lucien flinched instinctively at first.

Tiny reaction.

Still there.

Then froze completely when her fingers brushed carefully across the blood near his cheekbone.

Not his blood.

Mostly not.

The realization twisted painfully through her chest.

“Oh my God,” she whispered shakily. “What did you do.”

Lucien laughed once under his breath.

Broken sound.

“What I had to.”

“No.” Tears blurred her vision instantly. “Lucien…”

He looked exhausted now.

Not physically.

Soul-deep exhausted.

Like every violent thing inside him finally stood exposed beneath rain and flashing police lights.

“I tried to let you walk away,” he said quietly.

The confession hurt.

“I know.”

“But the second I heard your voice…” His eyes closed briefly. “I would’ve burned this entire city down to get you back.”

The honesty in the sentence shattered something inside her completely.

Because he meant it.

Every word.

Ivy touched his face more carefully now.

Gentle fingers against rain-soaked skin.

Lucien leaned unconsciously into the touch immediately.

And there he was.

Beneath the monster.

Beneath the violence.

The terrified boy who kept hot chocolate wrappers for twelve years and sat awake outside bedroom doors during storms.

Only now he looked older.

Bloodier.

And infinitely more afraid.

“You came for me,” Ivy whispered.

Lucien opened his eyes slowly.

“There was nowhere on earth I wouldn’t have gone.”

The tears finally slipped free.

Lucien noticed instantly.

His expression shattered harder.

“No, no— Ivy—”

“You’re bleeding everywhere.”

“I don’t care.”

“You got shot.”

“I don’t care.”

His voice cracked violently this time.

“I thought I lost you.”

The sentence destroyed the last surviving wall between them.

Ivy grabbed the front of his ruined coat suddenly and pulled him closer before thinking.

Lucien made another wrecked sound under his breath and wrapped both arms around her instantly.

Too tight.

Too desperate.

Like letting go physically wasn’t possible anymore.

Rain soaked through both of them while chaos exploded across the bridge outside.

Neither noticed.

Lucien buried his face against her neck breathing hard enough to shake.

And Ivy—

Ivy finally understood the full truth.

Lucien wasn’t fearless.

He was terrified constantly.

Terrified of losing the few things he loved badly enough to destroy himself protecting them.

The realization changed everything.

She held him tighter instinctively.

Lucien froze for half a second.

Then his entire body gave out slightly against hers.

Tiny collapse.

Still there.

Interesting.

Heartbreaking.

“I’m here,” Ivy whispered softly against wet dark hair. “Lucien, I’m here.”

His grip tightened painfully.

“I know.”

But he said it like he still needed convincing.

Police sirens screamed closer now.

Matteo appeared beside the SUV doorway breathing hard, gun still drawn loosely at his side.

Then stopped.

“Oh.”

Interesting expression.

Very interesting expression.

Because Lucien Moretti—

the man who terrified governments—

looked one second away from emotionally collapsing in the backseat of a wrecked SUV while Ivy Bennett held his face gently between both hands.

Matteo quietly looked away immediately.

Respectful.

Smart.

“I found Dante’s secondary route,” Matteo said carefully. “He escaped.”

Lucien’s eyes darkened instantly again.

The monster rising back up.

Ivy touched his cheek softly before he could fully disappear into it.

Lucien stopped immediately.

Just from that.

The realization stunned all three of them.

Ivy looked directly into his eyes.

“Not tonight.”

Rain slid slowly down Lucien’s face while sirens reflected blue and red across shattered glass around them.

For one long second—

he simply looked at her.

Then slowly nodded once.

And for the first time in his life—

Lucien Moretti chose her touch over revenge.
