"One Night With The Hidden Alpha" Chapter 39

Adrian didn't flinch. He moved with a velocity that bypassed human optics.

He was simply  there .

He drove the silver blade straight into the hunter's ocular cavity. The creature didn't even have time to hiss before it dissolved into a puddle of black, foul-smelling sludge.

The other two hunters flanked him, their movements synchronized by Orpheus's mental resonance.

Claire backed away, her boots splashing into a puddle of violet oil.

She looked toward the quad.

Killian was pinned. The nightmare creature had wrapped its multi-jointed limbs around his torso, the bone spurs digging into his ribs.

The Alpha let out a roar of absolute, shattering agony, his amber eyes flickering, the gold being swallowed by the violet haze.

"Killian!" Claire screamed.

She ignored the hunters. She ignored Adrian's bloodless efficiency.

She ran toward the center of the quad, her oversized sweater dragging in the mud.

"Claire! Get back!" Leon's voice yelled through her earpiece.

She didn't stop. She reached the edge of the violet smoke, the heat from Killian's fur hitting her face like an open furnace.

The nightmare creature turned its faceless slit toward her. It felt the vibration of her heart—the "anchor" frequency it was designed to break.

Orpheus let out a soft, elegant laugh from the roof.

"The variable presents itself for calculation."

He gestured with his thorned finger. The nightmare creature tightened its grip on Killian, its ribs cracking with a series of wet, rhythmic snaps.

Killian's head lolled back, his jaws dripping with dark gore, his eyes turning a dull, exhausted brown.

He was losing the fight. The beast was retreating into the skin, leaving the man to die in the rain.

Claire stopped three feet from the beast's massive, pulsating leg.

She didn't have a silver blade. She didn't have Alpha blood.

She had the memory of the penthouse.

She reached out and pressed her palm flat against the nightmare's grey, rippling flesh.

The cold was staggering—a physiological void that tried to suck the very marrow from her bones.

But she didn't pull back.

"Killian," she whispered, her voice a low-frequency signal designed for clinical stabilization.

"Focus on the contact point. Ignore the noise."

The nightmare creature shrieked, the violet smoke coiling around Claire's arm like oily snakes.

Orpheus's expression hardened. He felt the interference. The anchor wasn't just holding; she was overriding the jammer.

Killian's eyes snapped open.

The amber didn't just return; it ignited into a blinding, non-human gold that blotted out the violet light.

He let out a roar that physically pushed the rain back, a sound of raw, unadulterated power that shattered the nightmare's grip.

With a single, effortless twist, Killian ripped the nightmare's central limb from its torso.

The creature collapsed into a heap of grey meat and violet ash, its vertical slit flickering out like a dying lightbulb.

Killian stood over the remains, his chest heaving, his fur matted with black ichor and bright red blood.

He turned his head slowly, his molten eyes locking onto Claire.

He took a shaky step toward her, his mass displacing the very air in the quad.

"Run... Claire," Killian rasped, the voice a subsonic vibration that made Claire's teeth ache.

Claire didn't run. She reached up and brushed a smear of black sludge from his snout, her fingers disappearing into the thick, coarse fur.

"I told you, Killian," she whispered.

"I'm seeing it through."

High above them, the dormitory lights suddenly flickered and died.

The campus was plunged into an absolute, suffocating darkness, broken only by the rhythmic pulsing of the SUV's hazard lights in the distance.

Orpheus stood at the edge of the roof, his gold-rimmed glasses reflecting the amber glow of Killian's eyes.

He wasn't smiling anymore.

"The extraction is incomplete," Orpheus whispered, his voice resonating through the blackout.

"But the marrow... the marrow is finally ripe."

He stepped off the edge of the building.

The violet moths didn't flutter; they vibrated against Claire's skin with a high-frequency hum that set her teeth on edge. Each wing-beat felt like a microscopic needle-prick, a biological handshake trying to find a port in her nervous system.

Claire squeezed her eyes shut, her hands coming up to shield her face from the swarm.

"Killian!" The name left her throat as a ragged gasp, instantly swallowed by the violet haze.

A wave of furnace-heat slammed into her left side. The obsidian-furred mass of the Alpha crashed through the violet cloud, his jaws snapping at the empty air.

Killian's roar was a physical shockwave that scattered the moths for a split second. He stood over her, his massive frame a trembling wall of muscle and matting blood.

"Don't... touch... them," Killian rasped, his voice a low-frequency growl that made the ground beneath her boots vibrate.

A cold hand clamped around Claire's elbow, pulling her back toward the service ramp.

"The moths are biometrics, Virel," Adrian's voice cut through the dark, smooth and odorless. "They're mapping her marrow. Every second you stand there howling is a second Orpheus spends calibrating."

"Leon! Perimeter!" Claire shouted into her thermal comms unit. "The moths... they're reacting to the Alpha's frequency! Killian, get back!"

Killian froze, his nostrils flaring as he mapped the air. The moths weren't just swarming Claire anymore; they were spiraling around his heat, drawn to the purity of the Virel bloodline.

"He's the battery," Claire whispered, her psychology-brain mapping the data in real-time. "It isn't just taking me. It's using my bond with Killian as a conductor."

From the shadows of the dormitory entrance, a shape began to emerge. It was a man in a perfectly tailored white lab coat, his gold-rimmed glasses catching a stray glint of lightning.
