"Luna's Farewell: A Broken Love" Chapter 1

Chapter 1

"System, I am the daughter of Host 12138. I am applying to depart from this world."

On a freezing winter night, the fire in the fireplace burned brightly, casting dappled shadows against the white wall.

Luna stared at the swirling snow outside, slowly unclasping the simple silver necklace from her neck, and spoke softly.

A moment later, a cold, mechanical voice echoed abruptly in the quiet bedroom.

"Request received. The system is processing. You will be departed from this world in 15 days."

The moment the voice faded, Luna realized the necklace that had been resting in her palm had vanished into thin air.

At the same time, the television began broadcasting an interview with Caleb.

"This newly released jewelry collection is titled 'Love for Luna.' Mr. Caleb, does it hold any special meaning?"

Hearing the host's question, Caleb, the guest of honor, offered a gentle smile, his eyes filled with warmth.

"Luna is my wife's name. The meaning behind this collection is simple: I will love her for the rest of my life."

The host, caught off guard by this unexpected display of affection, couldn't hide the motherly grin spreading across her face.

"Online news says that you and your wife were each other's first loves and married the moment you reached the legal age. It’s been five years, and your relationship is still so stable and sweet. Do you have any secrets to a happy marriage?"

"Secrets? Perhaps it’s just that I listen to my wife in everything, reply to her messages instantly, and prepare surprises for her every day..."

Caleb’s string of shared experiences drew envious cheers and endless "awws" from the audience.

"Oh my god! Heaven, please grant me a boyfriend as domineering and devoted as him!"

"Caleb is one in a million! When will it be my turn to be the 'Mrs. Caleb'?"

Listening to the unrelenting sighs of admiration from the crowd, Caleb smiled, his voice light. "Sorry, Caleb belongs only to Luna."

Thunderous, continuous applause filled the room as the interview drew to a close.

Watching Caleb's figure slowly fade and blur on the screen, Luna turned off the TV, a mocking sneer tugging at the corners of her mouth.

Caleb belongs only to Luna?

Perhaps, in the past, that was true.

After all, they had grown up as childhood sweethearts, started dating at fifteen, and married at twenty-two, walking from school uniforms to wedding gowns.

Everyone around her envied her for finding such a devoted and affectionate partner.

He would flood his social media with her photos and take the initiative to keep his distance from all other women.

He had lit up the entire city with fireworks during their three-day wedding, just to declare to the world that he had brought home the girl he loved most.

He had donated his kidney to her without a second thought when she was diagnosed with renal failure, simply saying that if she died, he didn't want to live either.

Seven years of dating, five years of marriage—he had indeed kept the vow he made when he first confessed his love.

But so what?

People change.

Her father was like that, and Caleb was no exception.

At twenty-seven, Luna’s father betrayed her mother and hooked up with his secretary, causing her mother to die of a broken heart and depart from this world completely.

At twenty-six, Caleb had betrayed her too, hiding his best friend's sister away like a secret mistress.

The exact same script was playing out over twenty years later.

And this time, Luna made the same choice her mother had made.

If he betrayed her, she would vanish!

She touched her now-empty neck, suddenly recalling what her mother had said before she disappeared.

"Luna, I am not from this world. I only came here to complete a mission. Now that the mission is finished, and your father has failed me, I must return home. Before I leave, I give you this necklace. Whenever you feel unhappy, use it to summon the system to leave this world forever and come to be by my mother's side."

To leave this world forever?

It was exactly what Luna wanted.

She gave a faint laugh, slowly removed her wedding ring, and tossed it into the fireplace.

The moment she closed the door, a soft thud echoed from behind her.

Caleb, covered in wind and snow, pushed the door open. He was clutching a bouquet of vibrant red roses, delivering them to her with a beaming smile.

"Luna, the meeting ran late today. I'm sorry to have kept you waiting so long."

Luna received a bouquet of these beautiful flowers every day.

But today, the scent was unusually overpowering, as if trying to mask something.

She placed the flowers on the table and suddenly caught the thick scent of perfume on him.

So, that was it—it was to cover the scent of that woman.

Luna suppressed the pain in her heart, looked up, and saw the faint red mark on his collar.

Her tears had already run dry, so this time, after one glance, she looked away and spoke flatly.

"It’s fine. From now on, come home whenever you want. You don't even have to come home if you don't want to. Don't worry about what I think."

Just as he didn't need to know that, in this world,

she only had fifteen days left.

Hearing her say these words in such a detached tone, Caleb's heart skipped a beat.

"Luna, please, don't be angry with me. I promise I won't be this late again. I swear, as long as you forgive me, I'll do anything."

It was a trivial matter, yet he was holding her, coaxing her with such lowliness, prioritizing her every subtle emotion.

She didn't understand. If he loved her so deeply, why would he betray her?

Yet, she had to act for fifteen more days, so she could only suppress the agonizing pain in her heart. "I’m really not angry. I just think there’s no need for you to take my emotions so seriously."

"How could I not take them seriously? I love you so much, Luna. In my world, nothing compares to you." He smiled, continuing to whisper sweet nothings into her ear.

She didn't reply, but Caleb suddenly caught sight of her neck—it was bare.

"Luna, where is your necklace?"

He knew it was the item her mother had left behind before vanishing. She treasured it and always wore it, never leaving it behind.

Luna's body stiffened slightly. She lowered her eyes, her voice barely audible. "It broke. I sent it off to be repaired."

Seeing her expression, Caleb assumed her sadness today was because the necklace reminded her of her mother. He hurried to comfort her.

"It will be fixed, Luna. Don't be sad. Your mother will return to you, too. Even though she disappeared into thin air all those years ago, I've never given up searching for her. No one can just vanish from this world without a reason; she must be hiding. Trust me, I will definitely reunite you two."

Luna curled her lips.

She would indeed be reunited with her mother soon.

"And my father? How is he lately?"

Caleb paused for a moment, then sighed softly. "The same as always. He’s in the psychiatric ward, confused and constantly muttering your mother's name."

"He deserves it."

Luna uttered these four words, syllable by syllable.

Then, she looked up at the man whose face had subtly changed.

"Caleb, I am the same as my mother. I told you on the day we got married: if you ever change your heart, I will vanish, and you will never be able to find me..."

These words fell upon Caleb's ears, making his heart grow increasingly panicked.

He didn't want to keep listening. He pulled her into his arms, his tone firm.

"That won't happen, Luna. I won't fail you, and I won't allow you to leave like your mother did."

Hearing him make such solemn promises again, Luna spoke calmly. "And if that day really comes?"

"It never will. Even if you truly vanish, I will search the ends of the earth and the depths of hell. Even if I have to risk my life, I will find you."

Every word was like a prophecy, signaling the future that could already be foreseen.

Luna closed her eyes, her voice faint and light.

"I’ll be waiting for that day."

Caleb didn't hear clearly and asked with a tremor in his voice what she had said.

Luna shook her head, broke free from his embrace, and turned toward the bedroom.

"Nothing."

The next morning, a knock on the door woke Luna and Caleb.

Opening the door, Sienna stood there with a suitcase, her watery eyes full of coquettish charm.

"Caleb, there were rats in my house yesterday. I’m too scared to stay there. Can I stay at your place for a few days?"

Caleb refused without a second thought. "No. Luna doesn't like strangers in the house. You should go to a hotel."
