"He Cheated. I Owned Him." PART 6
Olivia Brooks woke up the next morning and did something she hadn’t done in weeks.
She smiled.
Not because anything was better.
But because she had decided it would look better that way.
The Manhattan sunlight poured through the bedroom windows, soft and expensive, painting everything in the same calm tone it always did—as if the world had not just cracked open beneath her life.
Daniel was already gone.
A note sat on the kitchen counter.
“Early meeting. Love you.”
Two words.
Love you.
Olivia stared at them for a long time before pouring herself coffee.
Then she replied to the message he had sent earlier.
“Okay. Have a good day.”
Nothing more.
No questions. No tone. No emotion.
Just the version of herself he recognized.
The version that didn’t ask too much.
At exactly 9:12 a.m., Vanessa texted.
“Brunch this weekend? Miss you.”
Olivia replied within seconds.
“Of course.”
And that was the moment something shifted.
Not emotionally.
Strategically.
Because Olivia wasn’t reacting anymore.
She was performing.
At brunch with Vanessa two days later, the scene looked identical to every other time they had sat across from each other in Tribeca cafés—sunlight through glass windows, avocado toast, expensive coffee, soft background music designed to make people feel like their lives were more stable than they were.
Vanessa leaned in, smiling. “You’ve been quiet lately. Everything okay?”
Olivia stirred her coffee slowly. “Just tired.”
Vanessa nodded sympathetically. “Daniel working you too hard again?”
“He’s busy,” Olivia said.
“Always is,” Vanessa replied lightly. “That’s what makes him successful.”
The word successful now felt different in Olivia’s mind.
Like a costume.
Not a truth.
Vanessa reached across the table and touched Olivia’s hand briefly. “You two are solid. Don’t overthink things, okay?”
Olivia looked at her.
Really looked.
“I don’t overthink,” she said softly.
Vanessa smiled. “Good. Because you don’t need to.”
That sentence landed differently than intended.
Later that afternoon, Olivia returned home earlier than usual.
Daniel wasn’t there.
That wasn’t unusual.
What was unusual was what she found when she checked his tablet.
A shared calendar notification.
“Private dinner — Daniel & Vanessa — SoHo restaurant.”
No context.
No group invite.
Just the two names.
Marked as recurring.
Olivia didn’t blink.
She simply closed the tablet and placed it back exactly where she found it.
Then she opened her laptop.
And searched a number she had written down days ago but never called.
A law firm in Midtown.
Specializing in divorce, asset protection, and corporate separation.
She didn’t hesitate this time.
She called.
The receptionist answered. “Good afternoon, Carter & Miles Legal.”
Olivia paused only a second.
Then said, “I need to speak with someone about financial separation options.”
Her voice was calm.
Too calm for the words she was saying.
There was a brief hold.
Then a man answered.
“This is Attorney Miles.”
Olivia sat down at the kitchen island.

“I’m not ready to file anything,” she said immediately. “I just need to understand my position.”
There was a pause on the other end.
“That’s completely fine,” he said. “We can walk through asset structure, marital agreements, and options for private separation.”
Olivia nodded even though he couldn’t see her.
“Okay,” she said. “I want to be prepared.”
“Understood,” he replied. “Are you currently in a high-value shared asset marriage?”
“Yes,” she said.
Another pause.
Then: “We should schedule an in-person consultation.”
“Next week,” Olivia said.
“Works,” he replied. “Bring any financial documentation you have access to.”
“I have access to everything,” Olivia said.
That sentence hung in the air slightly longer than the others.
When she hung up, she didn’t feel relief.
She felt structure.
That evening, Daniel came home later than usual.
He loosened his tie at the door. “Long day,” he said automatically.
Olivia was sitting on the couch.
Reading.
“Dinner’s in the oven,” she said without looking up.
Daniel smiled faintly. “You’re the best.”
He leaned down and kissed her forehead.
A gesture that used to mean something.
Now it felt like punctuation.
Vanessa texted while Daniel was in the shower.
“Can you talk later? Need your advice on something.”
Olivia replied:
“Sure.”
When Daniel came out, he was scrolling through his phone immediately.
Olivia watched him.
He didn’t notice.
He never noticed anymore.
“Who’s that?” she asked casually.
Daniel glanced up. “Work.”
A pause.
Then he added, “Actually, Vanessa needed help with something. I told her I’d call her after dinner.”
Olivia nodded.
“Of course,” she said.
Daniel didn’t catch the tone.
Or maybe he didn’t care enough to.
Later that night, after Daniel fell asleep, Olivia stood in the hallway outside their bedroom for a long time.
She wasn’t emotional.
Not anymore.
She was observant.
And observant people noticed patterns.
Daniel’s phone lit up on the nightstand.
A message preview appeared.
Vanessa.
“Still thinking about tonight.”
Olivia didn’t move.
She simply watched the screen go dark again.
Then she walked to the living room, opened her laptop, and sent one final email.
To the attorney.
Subject line: “Preparation Consultation Confirmed.”
Body:
“I will proceed with review of all marital assets next week.”
She paused.
Then added:
“I want to understand every option available to me.”
She hit send.
And for the first time since everything began, Olivia didn’t feel like she was waiting for something to happen.
She felt like she had already started it.
