"One Night With The Hidden Alpha" Chapter 41

The violet smoke from Orpheus's dissolution still hung low over the campus quad, a toxic fog that refused to dissipate in the Chicago rain.

Killian Virel stood in the center of the ruin, his tactical vest hanging in shredded ribbons over his broad, blood-streaked chest.

His eyes were two burning pools of molten gold, the pupils slowly expanding as the Alpha's fury began to subside into a frantic, jagged concern.

He didn't look at the empty white lab coat on the gravel. He didn't look at Leon and the security detail scrambling to secure the perimeter.

He looked at Claire.

Claire Reyes sat on the edge of a stone planter, her oversized cream sweater stained with the black ichor of the hunters and the grey dust of the processing room.

Her right hand was clutched against her chest, her fingers digging into the wool of her sleeve.

"Claire," Killian rasped, his voice a sandpaper-rough vibration that rattled the air between them.

He took a step forward, his boots crunching on the masonry and shattered glass.

"Claire... let me see your wound."

He reached out, his large, scarred hand trembling with a restraint that looked physically agonizing.

Killian's fingers brushed the thin skin of her inner wrist, right where the violet "thorn embroidery" had begun its slow, rhythmic pulse.

The contact was a catastrophe.

The moment his skin touched hers, Claire's back arched, her mouth opening in a silent, soul-shattering scream as the violet lines beneath her skin turned a blinding, neon white.

Her nervous system felt like it had been rewired with high-voltage wire.

"Stop!" Claire finally gasped, her voice breaking. "Killian... don't... it's taking... my strength!"

She slumped forward, her face pale as bone, her breathing coming in shallow, desperate hitches.

The violet thorns on her wrist weren't just glowing anymore. They were moving, shifting like living parasites beneath her dermis, drinking the very heat from her blood.

Adrian Keller stepped out of the shadows of the dormitory archway.

He was holding a fresh linen towel, meticulously wiping a smear of dark, non-human blood from his cufflinks.

He didn't look at the carnage in the quad. He looked at the way Claire's pulse was visibly hammering against the violet lines.

"Get away from her, Virel," Adrian said, his voice a cool, filtered rasp that carried through the rain.

He took a slow, unhurried step toward Claire, stopping just outside the five-foot radius where the violet frequency was strongest.

"Look at the way the pattern reacts to your proximity," Adrian noted, his tone turning clinical, academic.

"You're a battery, Killian. And right now, Orpheus has turned your anchor into a straw."

He looked at Killian, his expression a mask of aristocratic disdain.

"Don't touch her. Every inch you get closer, that needle stabs deeper into her marrow."

Killian froze. The gold in his eyes flickered, the beast inside him letting out a low, agonizing whine of defeat.

Two hours later, the private medical bay in the basement of the VRL building was a theater of humming electronics and sterilized air.

Claire lay on the examination bed.

Killian sat in the corner, his head in his hands, his knuckles white peaks against his hair.

Adrian stood by the glass observation wall, his arms folded across his chest.

Two figures moved around the table with a mechanical, frantic efficiency.

Dr. Silas Vane, Killian's chief medical strategist, was a man who looked like he had been built from spare parts and old scars.

He was a former Blackwood pack medic, his sleeves rolled up to reveal a faded tattoo of a wolf's skull on his forearm.

He didn't use a stethoscope. He used a series of high-frequency thermal scanners, his movements jerky and aggressive.

"The Alpha's frequency is... it's all over the place," Silas muttered, his voice a gravelly grunt.

"Every time Mr. Virel paces outside that door, the subject's blood pressure spikes twenty points. It's like they're... they're wired in parallel."

Opposite him stood Dr. Elena Volkov, the contact Adrian had summoned from the Laurent archives.

She was a forensic hematologist who looked like she had never seen the sun—pale, razor-thin, with silver hair pulled back into a bun so tight it looked painful.

She held a glass vial of a dark, pulsating liquid—a neutralized sample of Suture marrow.

"It isn't just a physical reaction," Elena whispered, her voice a dry, elegant hiss.

She moved the vial toward Claire's wrist.

The moment the sample came within three inches of the mark, the violet thorns began to hum.

A low-frequency vibration filled the room, a sound like a swarm of bees trapped in a glass jar.

Claire groaned, her head tossing on the pillow, her green eyes fluttering open to reveal pupils that were beginning to tint with a faint, violet haze.

"See?" Elena noted, her nostrils flaring with a sharp, intellectual hunger.

"The mark is... it's a resonator. It isn't just observing. It's communicating."

Silas slammed his scanner onto the tray. "Communicating with what?"

"With the source," Elena said.

She turned toward the observation glass, her gaze locking onto Adrian.

"The data is consistent," Elena reported.

"The mark expands and contracts based on the subject's emotional state. If she's afraid, the thorns grow."

She glanced back at the door where Killian was currently slamming his fist against the reinforced glass.

"And when the Alpha is near... the integration accelerates. He isn't protecting her. He's fueling the process."

Adrian stepped into the medical bay, the air turning five degrees colder as he approached the table.

He didn't look at the monitors. He didn't look at the doctors.

He looked at the way the violet lines were beginning to wrap around Claire's palm, following the line where the silver shard had cut her days before.

Killian pushed through the door, Leon trying and failing to hold him back.

"What is that thing?" Killian demanded, his voice cracking. "What did they do to her?"

He stopped five feet away, his chest heaving, his eyes searching Claire's face for a reason to keep breathing.

Adrian finally turned his head, his gold-rimmed glasses catching a sharp, white glint from the overhead surgical lights.

His face was no longer the mask of a bored professor. It was the face of a predator who had finally realized the scale of the trap.

"This isn't a wound, Killian," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a lethal, intimate register.

He reached out, his pale finger hovering just above the pulsing violet thorns.

"It's an invitation."

Killian's jaw locked. "An invitation to what?"

Adrian looked at Claire, his blue-gray eyes turning a dark, bruised obsidian.

"Orpheus doesn't want to kill the anchor," Adrian whispered.

"He wants to move in."
