"One Night With The Hidden Alpha" Chapter 45
Claire sat on the cold oak floor of the transparent sanctuary, her spine a rigid line against the ballistic glass.
The blue suppressant Adrian had injected was a double-edged blade. It froze the pain of the violet thorns, but it also leached the heat from her marrow, turning her skin a translucent, sickly alabaster.
Her green eyes were hollow, shadowed by dark violet circles that looked like bruises. She looked less like the vibrant student who had walked into the rooftop party and more like a projection of the Laurent bloodline—an echo of dead winter.
Through the high-frequency thermal scanners in his tablet, Killian watched her heat signature flicker and dim.
The Alpha's jaw was set so tight the muscle beneath his ear looked like a knotted cord. Every time Claire's pulse dipped, he let out a low, agonizing rumble that the lake wind carried away.
"She's doing it," Adrian's voice drifted through the intercom, cool and odorless.
Adrian stood in the shadows of the airlock, his gold-rimmed glasses catching the rhythmic red pulse of the perimeter alarms. He watched Claire's fingers move across a massive sheet of architectural vellum spread over the floor.
Claire didn't use a ruler. Her hand moved in jerky, spasmodic bursts, driven by the violet frequency humming in her wrist.
She was drawing a labyrinth.
It wasn't a standard blueprint. It was a neurological map of a subterranean hell.
A series of concentric circles intersected with jagged, vertical lines that looked like stitches. Huge, hollowed-out chambers were marked with runes that made Claire's fingers tremble as she traced them.
"The old filtration plant," Claire whispered, her voice a dry rasp that barely caught the microphone. "It's a... a nervous system."
She slammed her palm down on the center of the drawing, right where a massive, multi-chambered vault sat beneath the Chicago riverbed.
"Orpheus is there," she breathed, her forehead dropping against the paper. "He's sitting in the center of the stitch. He's... he's waiting for the battery."
Killian was inside the airlock before the sentence finished.
He bypassed the biometric scanners, his Alpha frequency overriding the facility's locks with a roar of mechanical protest.
He stopped three feet from Claire, his heat hitting her like an open furnace. The violet thorns on her wrist instantly flared, the purple lines pulsing in a frantic, rhythmic dance of recognition.
"Don't," Claire gasped, her eyes snapping open. "If you come closer... the bridge completes. He'll see the map."
Killian froze. His knuckles turned white as he gripped the edge of the marble counter.
"The map is done," Killian growled, his voice a subsonic vibration that rattled the glass. "Leon! Gear up the twelve. We're moving to the South Side sector."
"You'll die before you reach the elevator, Killian," Adrian said, stepping into the room with a liquid, bloodless grace.
The vampire looked at the map, his blue-gray eyes narrowing as he scanned the runes.

"Orpheus has built a biological lock," Adrian noted, his voice dropping into a lethal, clinical register.
"He's tuned the plant to the Blackwood frequency. The moment a wolf crosses the threshold, the marrow-vibration will collapse the tunnels."
Killian turned on him, his upper lip curling to reveal teeth that were no longer human. "You don't have the authority to command the wolf pack, do you?"
"Or," Adrian gestured toward a heavy steel door at the back of the medical bay—the "Safe Room," a lead-lined vacuum designed for high-level VRL negotiations.
"We need a treaty, Alpha," Adrian whispered. "A temporary alignment of frequencies."
The interior of the Safe Room was a tomb of pressurized silence and shadows.
No cameras. No microphones. No signals in or out.
Killian sat across a slab of black granite, his broad shoulders filling the space, his eyes two burning embers of amber.
Adrian Keller leaned back in the opposite chair, his long, pale fingers steepled beneath his chin. He looked like an aristocratic judge presiding over a sentencing.
"The thorns are a metaphysical anchor," Adrian began, his voice a cool, filtered rasp. "They've integrated into Claire's autonomic nervous system. To remove them, you have to cut the thread at the moment of peak frequency."
"How?" Killian rasped.
"The wolf provides the force," Adrian explained, his blue-gray eyes turning a dark, bruised obsidian. "You have to flood the mark with the Alpha's purity. You have to make the parasite think the integration is complete."
Killian's grip on the granite table tightened until the stone groaned. "And when it opens up to drink?"
"That's when I use the ice," Adrian said.
He pulled a small, silver-plated lancet from his coat, the blade engraved with Laurent sigils.
"The vampire's venom, neutralized and concentrated, can freeze the 'stitch' for exactly three seconds," Adrian noted. "In that window, I cut. You pull the frequency back. And the bridge collapses."
Killian stared at the silver blade, then at the predator holding it.
The Blackwood pack and the Laurent bloodline had been at war for centuries. The Black Vein War had turned Chicago's foundations into a graveyard of wolves and leeches.
"If you miss, Keller..." Killian whispered, the sound a subsonic rumble that made the granite vibrate.
"If I miss, she becomes the First Stitch," Adrian interrupted, his voice devoid of human empathy. "And you become Orpheus's battery for the next hundred years."
Killian stood up, his massive frame displacing the air in the small room. He reached across the table, his hand expanding into a dark, obsidian-clawed mass.
He didn't attack. He held his hand out, palm up.
"The South Side plant," Killian growled. "Tonight. No guards. No distractions."
Adrian stood, his movements fluid and bloodless. He placed his pale, frozen hand into the Alpha's burning palm.
The scent of cedar and ash collided with the smell of dead winter and silver.
"The treaty is signed, Blackwood," Adrian murmured.
"But don't forget... once the needle is out, the alignment's over."
