"The Fragrance of Sin" Chapter 3

Chapter3: Dance of Specters

The armored Maybach carrying Dominic Vance sliced through the relentless, blinding São Paulo downpour, arriving precisely at the grand marble steps of the municipal opera house where the high-society charity gala was already underway.

Stepping out into the freezing, relentless rain, the billionaire adjusted his heavy wool overcoat with sharp, calculated precision, his mind locked entirely on destroying the mysterious French rival threatening his multi-billion-dollar empire before she could dismantle his legacy piece by piece.

Inside the cavernous, chandelier-lit ballroom, hundreds of elite socialites, corrupt politicians, and powerful corporate magnates murmured nervously among themselves while waiting anxiously for the legendary savior of the cosmetics market to appear.

Dominic stood near the edge of the elevated dais, holding a flute of crystal champagne as his piercing, restless sapphire-blue eyes scanned the grand double doors with cold, unrelenting impatience.

"Mr. Vance, the French delegation has finally arrived at the perimeter, and word from the security detail is that she is making an exceptionally grand entrance," whispered Gisele, the notoriously sharp and ruthless editor-in-chief of Brazil's largest fashion magazine, stepping smoothly into his personal space with a knowing, predatory smirk.

"Let her walk in and try to posture all she wants, Gisele, because tonight I will dismantle her corporate bluff before midnight and show her who truly commands this city," Dominic replied, his deep, resonant voice carrying a lethal, controlled edge that made the journalist shiver with professional delight.

Before Gisele could offer another cynical remark, the massive mahogany doors of the ballroom swung slowly open, and the roaring chatter of the elite instantly died down to an absolute, breathless silence.

Stepping across the threshold under the blinding glare of the crystal chandeliers was a woman whose sheer, untouchable presence froze the air in the entire room.

Evangeline walked into the hall wearing a breathtaking, geometric black silk gown that hugged her porcelain curves like a second skin, her razor-sharp obsidian bob framing a face of cold, untouchable perfection.

Her rare, mesmerizing amber-gold eyes swept over the crowded room with absolute disdain, locking onto Dominic's frozen frame for a fraction of a second before dismissing him entirely as if he were nothing more than dust on the floor.

"My god, look at her," Gisele whispered under her breath, her eyes widening in sheer professional awe as she instantly captured the high-voltage, explosive current snapping between the two former lovers.

Dominic’s dead, hollow soul violently revived in a blinding flash of agonizing pain and insane possessiveness, his fingers clamping down so hard on his crystal champagne glass that the stem shattered completely in half.

Amber liquid and sharp glass shards scattered across the polished marble floor, but the billionaire didn't even flinch as warm blood began to trickle down his torn palm.

"You cannot escape me so easily after everything we have been through, Evangeline," Dominic muttered under his breath, his chest heaving as the phantom memories of the past four years crashed violently against his mind.

Without breaking her rhythmic, measured stride, Eva glided past the bewildered crowd straight toward the center of the dais, treating her powerful ex-husband like transparent, weightless oxygen.

Blinded by a sudden, feral wave of panic and desperate withdrawal, Dominic lunged forward and gripped her bare wrist with an iron fist, his breath catching painfully in his throat.

"You cannot simply syndicate your way back into my life like a ghost after four long years of absolute hell, Evangeline," Dominic hissed through clenched teeth, his sapphire eyes dilated with raw, unadulterated madness.

Eva did not raise her voice, nor did she show a single flicker of fear as she stared down at the hand burning against her skin with supreme, crushing indifference.

Slipping out of his suffocating grip with effortless, cat-like elegance, she tilted her chin upward and delivered her chilling verdict in a voice like frozen steel.

"Careful, Mr. Vance," Eva whispered softly enough for only him to hear, her amber eyes burning with a silent promise of total destruction, "I am Eva."

"You are playing a very dangerous game in a city that belongs to me," Dominic warned, his fingers twitching as he fought the overwhelming urge to pull her back into his arms.

"Ownership is an illusion, Dominic, and your entire empire is currently built on sand," Eva retorted smoothly, her tone dripping with absolute aristocratic contempt.

As she pulled away, a sudden, unfamiliar draft caught the air around her, and a strange wave of sensory data crashed violently against Dominic's hypersensitive senses.

He inhaled sharply, realizing with mounting horror that she was wearing a completely new, provocative scent—an icy, metallic fragrance laced with cold jasmine that he had never encountered in all his years as a master perfumer.

"Who is she talking to now?" Gisele muttered nearby, frantically scribbling notes on her digital pad while observing the unfolding public drama with ravenous interest.

"Do not write a single word of this interaction unless you want your publication buried by morning," Dominic snapped without turning his head, his gaze locked entirely on Eva's receding figure.

Without giving Dominic a single second to recover from the olfactory shock, Eva glided smoothly past his rigid, trembling frame to formally greet the Vice President of State standing near the VIP lounge.

Left standing alone in a pool of spilled champagne, Dominic stared at his bloodied palm with trembling fingers, completely devoured by the realization that his queen had returned not to negotiate, but to execute him.
