"Locked in Midnight" Chapter 3

Chapter 3: Shards of Glass and Whiskey

Kilian did not let her go until his grip had thoroughly branded her skin with the undeniable mark of his ownership.

He released her wrist with a slow, deliberate motion, stepping back just far enough to let her drop back onto the polished hardwood floor.

Vera staggered slightly from the sudden loss of support, her hand automatically flying up to cradle her throbbing, red-marked wrist.

"You are a sadistic bastard, Kilian," she spat out, her voice trembling slightly with a mixture of burning pain and white-hot fury.

Kilian merely adjusted the cuffs of his ruined black shirt, his dark eyes gleaming with a terrifying, untamed satisfaction.

"I am whatever survival requires me to be, Vera," Kilian replied smoothly, turning his back on her to walk toward the expansive wet bar set against the far wall.

He poured two fingers of amber scotch into a heavy crystal tumbler, swirling the liquid slowly as he stared out into the raging storm outside.

"You didn't bring me all the way to Rome just to listen to your philosophical excuses about tyranny," Vera snarled, forcing her legs to steady as she glared at his broad back.

"No, I brought you here because you crossed a line that no one else has ever survived touching," Kilian said, his voice dropping an octave as he turned back to face her.

He took a slow sip of the burning liquor, his gaze never leaving her defiant, ice-blue eyes.

"You think you're the only one who lost something to the blood pacts of the past, Vera?" Kilian asked, a bitter, humorless edge leaking into his controlled tone.

"I know exactly what your family took from mine, and I know the price you put on my father's head," Vera retorted, her voice cutting through the hum of the electronic security panels.

"Dmitri Volkov was a traitor to his own command long before my syndicate ever touched him, and the files in that drive proved it," Kilian shot back, his face darkening with a sudden, dangerous intensity.

"He was framed by the very council you now rule, and you know it!" Vera shouted, stepping forward with her fists clenched so tightly her fingernails bit into her palms.

"You know nothing about the war that built this empire," Kilian growled, slamming his crystal glass down onto the marble counter with a sharp, echoing crack.

The sound ricocheted off the reinforced walls, stopping Vera in her tracks as Kilian closed the distance between them in a single stride.

"Then teach me, Kilian," Vera whispered, her voice laced with a reckless, self-destructive challenge that dared him to cross the final boundary.

The air between them instantly ignited, heavy with a lethal, suffocating friction that felt more dangerous than any loaded weapon.

Kilian didn't hesitate a second longer, his large hands reaching out to grab her by the waist and haul her violently against his hard chest.

"You asked for this,

krasotka

," Kilian muttered fiercely right before his lips crashed down onto hers in a brutal, consuming collision.

It was a kiss born of pure hatred, unmitigated rage, and a desperate, starving hunger that neither of them could control any longer.

Vera gasped against his mouth, her initial resistance dissolving instantly into an aggressive, wild retaliation of teeth and tongue.

She fought back with every ounce of strength she possessed, her hands clawing at his shoulders as she sought to punish him for everything he had taken.

Kilian groaning in response, deepening the kiss with a raw, primal intensity that threatened to burn their entire world to ash.

In a sudden surge of fierce rebellion, Vera bit down hard onto his lower lip until a sharp, metallic taste of blood flooded their mouths.

Kilian pulled back just a fraction of an inch, his chest heaving heavily as he stared down at her with dark, dilated pupils.

Instead of pushing her away, a dangerous, breathless laugh escaped his throat at the sight of her defiance.

"Is that all the fight you have left, Vera?" Kilian rasped, his thumb wiping the smear of blood from his lip with a predatory smirk.

"Go to hell," she breathed, her lips swollen and burning as she stared up into his fierce, unyielding gaze.

Before he could answer, a sharp, piercing red light flickered rhythmically from the inner pocket of her tactical jacket.

It was a coded emergency transmission from her hidden underground network, vibrating with a high-priority warning signal.

Vera's expression froze instantly, the intoxicating haze of the moment shattering into a million jagged pieces of cold reality.

She wrenched herself out of his grip, stepping back toward the shattered frame of the window to check the encrypted stream on her hidden device.

"What is it?" Kilian demanded, his voice dropping into a cold, authoritative register as he watched her shift back into a tactical mindset.

"Nothing that concerns you," Vera lied smoothly, her ice-blue eyes refusing to meet his probing stare as she deleted the transmission code.

"In this fortress, everything concerns me, especially when an outside frequency reaches your comms," Kilian replied, his jaw tightening as he stepped closer.

Vera stood rigidly by the edge of the shattered window, letting the freezing wind whip her silver-gray hair across her face while she wiped a trace of blood from her own lip.

Kilian stood a few paces away, his dark eyes fixed entirely on her trembling reflection in the cracked glass pane, knowing full well that they were both completely undone.
