"Locked in Midnight" Chapter 7
Chapter 7: Fortifying the Dark
The massive steel blast doors of the Roman estate locked into place with a series of heavy, deafening thuds that vibrated straight through the floorboards.
Red emergency strobes bathed the central war room in a violent, pulsating glow, reflecting off the banks of multi-screen monitors that mapped out every square inch of the sprawling compound.
"Marco, position the heavy sniper units along the western ridge before the mercenaries use the tree line for cover," Kilian commanded, his voice sharp and absolute as he barked orders through the master tactical comms.
"Already moving the teams into position, boss, but thermal imaging shows at least fifty armed hostiles swarming the outer perimeter," Marco replied instantly, his tactical headset crackling with static over the distant roar of incoming vehicles.
Vera stood beside the main control console, her hand gripping the edge of the steel desk to steady herself as a sudden wave of dizziness threatened to buckle her knees.
"Give me the feed from Sector Three, Kilian, your external cameras are blind to the blind spot near the old greenhouse," Vera said, forcing her voice to remain ice-cold despite the cold sweat beading along her hairline.
"You should be resting in the reinforced bunker downstairs, Vera, not commanding a defense line with a bullet graze and a child to protect," Kilian snapped, turning toward her with a dark, suffocating intensity in his eyes.
"I am a tactical strategist, not a piece of porcelain you can lock in a drawer, and your blind spots are going to get your men killed," Vera retorted fiercely, shoving the holographic map closer to his face.
Kilian stared at her for a fraction of a second, recognizing the unbreakable defiance in her ice-blue eyes before he finally slammed his hand onto the console to reconfigure the camera feeds.
"Fine, but if you collapse on my floor, I'm locking both of us in the vault," Kilian warned, his tone dropping into a dangerous, gravelly growl.
Outside the high-tech fortress, the first wave of mercenaries opened fire, riddling the reinforced glass windows with a deafening storm of lead and armor-piercing rounds.
"They are hitting the main courtyard," Marco shouted over the intercom, the sound of automatic gunfire echoing loudly in the background.
"Lock down all interior sectors and hold the line," Kilian ordered calmly, pulling his own custom sidearm from its holster and checking the magazine with practiced speed.
Vera's fingers flew across the digital tactical interface, tracking the heat signatures of the enemy snipers hiding in the distant shadows of the olive groves.
"Three o'clock on the upper ridge, Marco, take them out before they establish a mortar nest," Vera instructed coldly, pointing directly at a pulsing red cluster on the monitor.
"Target acquired and neutralized," Marco's voice crackled back a moment later as a muffled explosion lit up the distant hillside.

For the next twenty minutes, the war room transformed into a symphony of synchronized slaughter, with Kilian and Vera operating as a terrifyingly lethal dual-engine of defense.
Every time a mercenary tried to breach the inner courtyard, Vera’s predictive analysis fed the exact coordinates to Kilian and his strike teams, wiping them out before they could touch the doors.
Yet, beneath her unyielding exterior, the toll of the pregnancy and the sudden physical strain began to violently assault her system.
Another sharp wave of nausea tore through her stomach, turning the glowing tactical screens into a swirling, dizzying blur of red and green light.
Vera staggered backward, her breath catching painfully in her throat as the room tilted violently on its axis.
"Vera!" Kilian shouted, abandoning the main console instantly as he caught her swaying frame just before she collapsed against the steel wall.
"I'm fine, keep your eyes on the monitors," she whispered through clenched teeth, pushing against his chest with trembling fingers.
"You are shaking like a leaf, and your skin is freezing cold," Kilian growled, his face hardening with a furious, possessive panic that completely overrode his tactical focus.
Before she could argue or push him away again, a deafening explosion shattered the calm of the courtyard outside.
A localized bomb detonated directly at the eastern gate, tearing through the reinforced steel and breaching the secondary defense line with a blinding flash of yellow fire.
Shockwaves rippled through the estate, sending shattered glass and concrete dust raining down from the war room's high ceilings.
"The eastern gate has fallen, they are inside the main breezeway!" Marco yelled through the comms, his voice cut off by the sound of raging fire.
Kilian didn't hesitate for a single microsecond as the alarms wailed higher and the smell of smoke began to drift through the ventilation ducts.
Without listening to a single word of her furious protests, Kilian physically hoisted Vera over his broad shoulder in a swift, unbreakable grip.
"Put me down, Kilian, we have to secure the terminal!" Vera screamed, pounding her fists against his back as he carried her away from the blast zone toward the subterranean escape chute.
"The terminal can burn, you and our child are getting out of this fire right now," Kilian snarled, his voice carrying the terrifying absolute weight of a king protecting his entire world.
