"A Waltz of Scars" Chapter 2
Chapter 2: Whispers in the Dark
The echoes of shattering glass from the ballroom had barely faded into the damp night air when Julian intercepted Scarlett in the secluded shadows of the private service corridor.
He moved with frantic desperation, his tailored suit jacket wrinkled from the chaotic stampede of panicked elites.
Scarlett did not break her stride, her dark heels clicking against the stone floor with the rhythmic coldness of a ticking clock.
Julian threw out a hand to block her path, his chest heaving as he stared down at the woman he had discarded a decade ago.
"You cannot just walk back in here and pretend none of that happened," Julian hissed, his voice cracking with a mixture of fury and lingering obsession.
Scarlett stopped instantly, turning her head slowly to pin him with a gaze sharp enough to draw blood.
"And you cannot pretend that a stray dog like you ever had a claim to my life, Julian," Scarlett replied, her tone dripping with absolute ice.
Julian flinched as if struck by a physical blow, his hands curling into tight fists at his sides.
"I was forced into that engagement by the council," Julian stammered defensively, his eyes begging her to understand. "They told me you were dead, Scarlett."
"They told you I was dead, and you celebrated by sleeping with the maid who stole my cradle," Scarlett whispered, stepping closer until he was forced to recoil. "Do not insult my intelligence by playing the victim now."
"I still care about you," Julian whispered desperately, his voice dropping into a broken plea. "We can fix this, Scarlett. We can run away from Vance and take back everything that is ours."
"You think I want to run away with a coward who bends the knee to anyone holding a leash?" Scarlett laughed, a harsh and mirthless sound that cut deep into his fragile ego. "You are worth less than the dirt on my shoes, Julian."
She brushed past his frozen frame without another glance, leaving him standing alone in the damp corridor with the crushing weight of his own worthlessness.
Miles away in a heavily guarded penthouse suite, Cynthia was currently in the middle of a catastrophic, psychotic breakdown.
She screamed at the top of her lungs, sweeping her manicured hands across her ornate dressing table and sending crystal perfume bottles crashing to the floor.
With a final, hysterical shriek, she drove her fist straight into the center of her illuminated vanity mirror, shattering the glass into a thousand jagged pieces.
Blood welled from her knuckles, dripping onto her expensive silk robe, but she did not even feel the pain.
"She took everything!" Cynthia sobbed hysterically, clawing at her own cheeks as her reflection splintered into a gruesome mosaic of terror and despair. "She took my fiancé, she took my name, and now she is going to take my life!"

"Only if you let her, little thief," a deep, velvet voice resonated from the dark, unlit corner of her bedroom.
Cynthia froze, her breath catching in her throat as she whipped her tear-streaked face around toward the doorway.
Dorian Vance stepped out of the shadows, his dark brown hair slightly disheveled and a malicious, predatory grin curving his lips.
He wore a syndicate commander uniform adorned with silver insignia, though his eyes carried the toxic rot of deep-seated jealousy toward his half-brother Liam.
"Who are you?" Cynthia demanded, pressing her bloody back against the broken vanity as she tried to gather the remnants of her shattered dignity.
"I am the man who hates Liam Vance and Scarlett Thorne just as much as you do," Dorian replied smoothly, closing the distance between them with slow, measured steps.
Cynthia swallowed hard, her panic momentarily giving way to a desperate curiosity as she looked up at the stranger.
"What do you want?" Cynthia asked, her voice trembling as she wiped a smear of blood across her cheek.
"I want to tear down my brother's empire, and you want to skin the red-haired bitch alive," Dorian murmured, stopping just a foot away from her. "It sounds to me like we have a mutual interest in a very high-stakes bloodbath."
"She humiliated me in front of all of high society," Cynthia hissed, her eyes narrowing with sudden, vicious clarity. "I would burn the world down to watch her crawl."
"Then consider this your lucky night," Dorian said, extending a gloved hand toward her with a sickeningly charming smile. "I can give you the power, the resources, and the exact blueprint to destroy her from the inside."
Cynthia stared at his outstretched hand, her manic tears instantly drying up as her mind calculated the dark trade-off.
She thought of Scarlett cold emerald eyes, of the way Liam Vance had looked at her with hungry fascination, and of her own impending irrelevance.
Without a single second of hesitation, Cynthia stopped crying and cold-bloodedly grasped Dorian's outstretched hand, sealing their wicked pact in the dark.
