"A Waltz of Scars" Chapter 4
Chapter 4: The Masquerade of Lies
The damp chill of the ruined Thorne estate still clung to Scarlett skin as she traded her tactical combat gear for a fluid gown of spun silver.
She fastened a matching Venetian silver mask across the upper half of her face, concealing her identity beneath a veneer of elite anonymity.
In her left ear, a tiny titanium earpiece crackled to life with the calm, methodical voice of Marcus Thorne.
"The firewall protecting Elena internal registry is holding strong, but I am routing a backdoor through the eastern server bank," Marcus murmured into his own secure mic from a safehouse across the city.
"Take your time, Marcus, but do not lose the trail," Scarlett whispered softly as she stepped from her black town car into the blinding glare of the private estate.
Miles away in the glittering ballroom, Elena hosted her exclusive masquerade ball to scout fresh human subjects for the multi-national biotech labs.
Crystal chandeliers cast a decadent glow over the masked socialites, masking the lethal intrigue and biological trafficking humming beneath the surface.
Julian paced frantically near the grand entrance, his eyes darting across every silver and gold mask in a desperate search for the red-haired ghost from his past.
Cynthia clung to the edge of the buffet table, playing the role of the desperate socialite while her manicured fingers shook around a flute of champagne.
She kept scanning the crowd for Dorian Vance, her mind poisoned with the malicious alliance they had forged against Scarlett.
"Julian, stop wandering around like a ghost," Cynthia hissed, grabbing his elbow as he tried to push past her toward the garden terrace.
"Get your hands off me, Cynthia," Julian snapped, shaking her off with a vicious shove that nearly spilled her drink.
He did not care about the scandal or the whispering onlookers anymore, driven entirely by a manic obsession to find Scarlett and beg for absolution.
In the shadows of the arched balcony, Scarlett glided silently through the gala, her movements completely unbothered by the suffocating sea of high-society elites.
"You have twenty seconds before Julian spots your silhouette near the fountain," Marcus instructed in her ear, his fingers flying across dual monitors.
"Let him look," Scarlett murmured, a dangerous, mocking smile curving her lips as she slipped directly into Julian path.
Julian stopped dead in his tracks as the silver-masked woman stepped out from behind a marble pillar, her presence instantly arresting his breath.
"Scarlett," Julian breathed out the name like a prayer, taking a desperate step closer to her. "I know it is you beneath that mask."
Scarlett tilted her head, letting out a soft, melodic laugh that dripped with absolute mockery.
"You think every woman wearing silver is a ghost from your miserable past, Julian?" Scarlett asked, altering her voice just enough to toy with his fraying nerves.

"Do not play games with me," Julian pleaded, his voice cracking as he reached out a trembling hand to touch her arm. "I made a mistake, and I am paying for it every single day."
"A mistake?" Scarlett repeated, her tone turning to ice beneath the silver filigree. "You traded my cradle for a seat at their table, Julian."
"I had no choice," Julian whispered frantically, glancing over his shoulder to ensure no one else was listening to his confession. "The council threatened to strip everything from me."
"Then it is a good thing you are about to lose everything anyway," Scarlett whispered back, stepping smoothly around his outstretched hand.
Before Julian could grab her wrist, a towering, suffocating shadow materialized directly behind him with absolute, menacing silence.
Liam Vance placed a heavy, gloved hand squarely on Julian shoulder, applying enough pressure to make the younger man wince in sudden agony.
"You are standing too close to what belongs to me, Montgomery," Liam rumbled, his voice a low, gravelly threat that vibrated through the floorboards.
Julian froze instantly, his blood turning to ice as he recognized the terrifying syndicate overlord towering over him.
"Vance," Julian choked out, his knees trembling so violently that he had to brace himself against the marble pillar to stay upright.
"Step away before I remove the hands you used to touch her," Liam ordered quietly, his ice-blue eyes flashing with murderous intent.
Julian did not need to be told twice, scrambling backward into the crowd with his tail tucked between his legs like a beaten dog.
Scarlett watched Julian pathetic retreat with mild amusement, crossing her arms over her silver silk bodice.
"I do not need a babysitter, Vance," Scarlett reminded him coldly, tilting her chin up to meet his intense gaze.
"You are not being babysat, little wolf," Liam replied, his gaze dropping to her masked lips with a hungry, unyielding heat. "You are simply being cornered."
"Try it and see who bleeds first," Scarlett challenged, turning on her heel to vanish deeper into the labyrinth of the estate.
Liam did not pursue her immediately, trusting the invisible web of guards he had placed around the perimeter to keep her contained.
Meanwhile, back in his secure safehouse, Marcus fingers hit the enter key with lethal precision as the final firewall collapsed.
"Scarlett, I am inside their primary financial registry," Marcus reported through the earpiece, his tone turning razor-sharp. "You are not going to believe what Elena has been wiring funds into."
"Talk to me, Marcus," Scarlett commanded quietly, slipping into an empty service hallway away from the blaring ballroom music.
"She is routing millions directly to Dr. Alistair's off-shore biological weapons lab," Marcus revealed, his keyboard clicking furiously in the background. "They are weaponizing pure shifter bloodlines using the Thorne estate basement data."
Scarlett stopped walking, her emerald eyes narrowing behind her silver mask as the final pieces of the conspiracy locked into place.
"Send the encrypted wire logs to my secure terminal right now," Scarlett ordered, her voice dropping into a lethal register. "We are going to burn her entire operation to the ground."
"Transfer complete," Marcus confirmed. "Be careful, Scarlett, because Elena's private security detail just altered their patrol routes toward your sector."
Scarlett cut the audio feed with a quick tap to her earpiece, slipping through a heavy mahogany door into an empty, marble-tiled washroom.
She locked the heavy deadbolt behind her with a satisfying click, sealing herself away from the noise and filth of the gala outside.
Standing before the expansive, golden-framed vanity mirror, Scarlett reached up with steady fingers and slid off her silver mask.
She stared with icy detachment at her own reflection, her fiery red waves tumbling down her back as the cold reality of her war settled over her bones.
