"A Waltz of Scars" Chapter 5
Chapter 5: Unwanted Rescue
The cold surface of the golden-framed vanity mirror reflected a face that refused to surrender to the decades of betrayal.
Scarlett let out a slow, controlled breath, anchoring her racing pulse before turning away from her own reflection.
She retrieved the encrypted flash drive containing Elena financial ledgers from her garter sheath, sliding it securely into her tactical harness.
A soft chime sounded in her left ear as Marcus re-established the secure connection from his remote safehouse terminal.
"Scarlett, I am reading an anomalous spike in localized encryption traffic coming from the lower archive level of the estate," Marcus warned.
"Define anomalous," Scarlett whispered, her combat boots making zero sound as she unlocked the washroom door and slipped back into the corridor.
"Thermal sensors indicate at least six heavily armed operatives are converging on your exact coordinates from the service stairwell," Marcus replied tersely.
"It seems Elena and Dorian left a welcoming committee for me," Scarlett murmured, her lips curling into a cold, humorless smile.
She sprinted down the dimly lit hallway toward the sub-basement archives, intent on uncovering the physical files backing up the digital drive.
As she reached the heavy reinforced steel door of the archive room, she inserted her override key into the digital bypass terminal.
The security screen flashed a blinding crimson, a silent trap engineered by Elena and Dorian locking down the entire sector automatically.
"The door is dead-bolted from the inside mainframe, and the hallway bulkheads are dropping," Marcus reported, his keyboard clicking with frantic speed.
Before Scarlett could fire her laser cutter into the control panel, heavy tactical boots echoed with terrifying velocity from both ends of the corridor.
Six elite mercenaries in black combat gear rounded the corners simultaneously, their suppressed assault rifles snapping up to target her chest.
"Don't move a muscle, little bird," the lead mercenary growled through his comm-mask, his finger tightening against the trigger.
Scarlett did not panic, her right hand sliding smoothly toward her hidden stiletto as she calculated the angles for a lethal counter-strike.
Before she could close the distance, the corridor lights shattered completely, plunging the underground hallway into absolute pitch blackness.
A series of muffled, wet thuds echoed through the dark, followed instantly by the metallic clatter of heavy rifles hitting the marble floor.
Thermal flashes illuminated the carnage for a fraction of a second as Liam elite strike team neutralized the entire ambush squad in seconds.
Not a single enemy operative managed to fire a shot, their bodies dropping lifelessly to the floor with brutal, clinical efficiency.
Stepping over the fallen mercenaries, Liam emerged from the shadows like an apex predator finishing a hunt in the dead of night.
His dark wool coat was unbuttoned, his ice-blue eyes gleaming with a terrifying, protective fury that cast a chill over the entire corridor.

"You walk into too many death traps for someone who claims to despise company," Liam rumbled, his voice vibrating through the tense air.
Scarlett lowered her hand from her hidden blade, her chest heaving slightly as she stared at the silent massacre surrounding them.
"I had the situation entirely under control, Vance," Scarlett lied smoothly, lifting her chin to meet his intense gaze.
"You were about to take three high-caliber rounds to the chest, little wolf," Liam corrected, stepping closer until he invaded her personal space.
"Your men are entirely too eager to ruin my fun," Scarlett retorted, though her defiance lacked its usual razor-sharp edge.
The close call forced Scarlett to realize she could no longer completely ignore Liam unwavering, destructive devotion to keeping her alive.
She hated the suffocating weight of his protection, yet she could not deny the staggering lethality he brought to her war.
"Check the bodies," Liam ordered over his shoulder without breaking eye contact with Scarlett.
One of his surviving guards stepped forward quickly, tearing a scorched tactical pouch from the chest rig of the lead mercenary.
The guard handed a heavy military-grade data chip to Liam, who inspected the surface markings before passing it directly to Scarlett.
Scarlett took the chip in her palm, her emerald eyes widening slightly as she examined the embossed serial numbers stamped into the casing.
The recovered mercenary tech bore the distinct corporate military seal of the Montgomery family enterprise.
"Julian family," Scarlett whispered, a dark wave of realization washing over her as the pieces of the global conspiracy snapped into place.
"It appears your pathetic ex-fiancé is playing a much larger game than we originally calculated," Liam noted, his voice dropping into a dangerous register.
Scarlett stared at the recovered intel in her hand, her emerald gaze hardening from shock into pure, calculated vengeance.
