"A Waltz of Scars" Chapter 7

Chapter 7: The Predator’s Dinner

The armored glass of Liam Vance’s penthouse fortress overlooked a sprawling city skyline drenched in cold, relentless rain.

Under the thin guise of physical protection, the syndicate lord had effectively trapped Scarlett within his heavily fortified domain.

She stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, her emerald eyes reflecting the neon lights while her mind raced with tactical escape routes.

A heavy oak dining table sat in the center of the vast, minimalist room, draped in stark white linen and illuminated by flickering candlelight.

Liam sat at the head of the table, his broad shoulders framed by the dark storm outside as he watched her with unblinking intensity.

"Standing by the glass will not change the code on the biometric locks, little wolf," Liam rumbled, his voice cutting cleanly through the silence.

Scarlett turned slowly, her posture rigid and defensive as she glided toward the table with the lethal grace of a caged panther.

"Locking me in a gilded cage does not make you a king, Vance," Scarlett retorted, pulling out the chair opposite him without an ounce of hesitation.

"It makes sure you survive long enough to watch me burn your enemies to ash," Liam replied smoothly, gesturing for her to sit.

Marcus’s calm voice crackled quietly through the titanium earpiece hidden inside her left ear, feeding her live updates from the outside perimeter.

"The local police are still investigating Julian's corporate collapse, and Elena's legal team is completely paralyzed," Marcus reported in a low whisper.

"Keep applying pressure to their offshore accounts," Scarlett murmured softly under her breath, her lips barely moving as she held Liam’s piercing gaze.

Across the candlelit table, an electric tension hung thick in the air, shifting their dynamic from tactical hostility to a volatile psychological duel.

"You talk to your ghosts as if they can save you from what is sitting across this table," Liam noted, his ice-blue eyes narrowing slightly.

"I talk to people who actually know how to build an empire instead of just slaughtering everyone inside it," Scarlett countered with instant, venomous sarcasm.

A dark, dangerous flicker of amusement danced across Liam's face, though the muscle in his jaw twitched with suppressed frustration.

"Slaughtering the weak is the only way to ensure the strong survive in my world," Liam stated coldly, leaning forward to rest his heavy forearms on the table.

"Then perhaps you are just as weak as the rest of them, hiding behind your iron walls and your army of paid executioners," Scarlett fired back, her words striking with the precision of a stiletto blade.

Liam’s breath hitched for a fraction of a second, the brutal honesty of her insult pushing the terrifying syndicate lord dangerously close to his absolute breaking point.

"You think you know something about my strength, Scarlett?" Liam growled, his voice dropping an octave as a dark, consuming heat radiated from his massive frame.

"I know that a man who builds a fortress out of fear is simply terrified of being left alone in the dark," Scarlett whispered, her voice dripping with absolute defiance.

Neither of them touched the food laid out before them, their hunger entirely consumed by the volatile friction crackling between their chairs.

Unacknowledged under the heavy weight of their shared trauma, an electric sense of mutual surrender began to bleed through their armor.

"You push every single boundary just to see if I will break your neck," Liam murmured, his gaze locking onto her defiant emerald eyes.

"I push them to see if you even have the spine to try," Scarlett challenged, leaning forward until the candlelight caught the sharp angle of her cheekbones.

In the background, Liam’s private wall-mounted monitor continued to loop an ancient, grainy surveillance file captured a decade ago.

The security footage displayed a young, terrified Scarlett being dragged away from her cradle, bearing Aurelia Vance’s digital signature authorizing her disappearance.

Scarlett glanced up at the screen for a brief second, a cold wave of realization washing over her as the final proof of the family betrayal played out in monochrome.

"She signed my death warrant when I was five years old," Scarlett whispered, her tone shifting from sarcastic hostility to a quiet, terrifying resolve.

Liam followed her gaze to the monitor, his expression hardening into a glacial mask of pure, unadulterated fury.

"Aurelia will answer for every second of that file," Liam promised quietly, his voice carrying the terrifying weight of an executioner's decree.

"She will answer to me," Scarlett corrected him instantly, her jaw tightening as she refused to outsource her vengeance to any man.

Liam stood up so abruptly that his heavy mahogany chair scraped loudly against the polished floorboards, shattering the tense quiet of the room.

He crossed the length of the table in two long, predatory strides before Scarlett could even blink or adjust her defensive posture.

Before she could push away from her seat, Liam’s strong hands gripped her narrow waist with an iron-clad, inescapable grip.

He hauled her bodily out of the chair, slamming her gently against the edge of the heavy dining table as his massive frame enclosed her completely.

Scarlett gasped at the sudden, breathtaking impact, her hands flying up to press against his broad chest to keep a fraction of space between them.

"Let me go, Liam," Scarlett demanded, though her voice lacked its usual icy conviction as his scent wrapped around her senses like smoke.

Liam’s breathing was ragged and uneven, his chest heaving against her palms as he fought back a consuming, desperate hunger that had tormented him for weeks.

"I have spent ten years watching monsters rule a world you deserved to inherit," Liam rasped, his face inches from hers as his ice-blue eyes burned with an unhinged intensity.

"And now you want to be the monster who chains me up instead?" Scarlett whispered, her emerald gaze clashing with his in a final, frantic bid for control.

"I don't want to chain you, Scarlett," Liam groaned, his lips brushing dangerously close to the sensitive skin of her throat. "I want to burn the whole damn world down just so you have nowhere else to run."

The candlelight flickered wildly in the draft from the storm outside, casting long, writhing shadows across their locked bodies as the slow-burn war finally reached its boiling point.
