"Paper Vows, Blood Debts" Chapter 2

Chapter 2: Tension in First Class

The morning sun broke over São Paulo like a jagged blade of light, cutting through the heavy smog as the private jet prepared for takeoff. Inside the cabin of the customized Gulfstream, the air was chilled to a crisp, sterile degree, contrasting sharply with the feverish tension lingering between them.

Cassia sat by the window, her posture rigid as she smoothed down the fabric of her tailored charcoal pencil skirt. She stared out at the tarmac, replaying every second of the midnight confrontation in the boardroom and the frantic escape that followed.

Alistair stepped into the cabin, shedding his tailored blazer and tossing it casually onto the opposite leather couch. He wore a crisp black dress shirt with the top three buttons undone, exposing the pale skin of his throat and the faint pulse beating there.

"You look tense, Miss Sterling," Alistair noted smoothly, dropping into the seat directly across from her with predatory grace. "Relax. We haven't even reached cruising altitude yet."

Cassia turned her head slowly, fixing him with a cold, analytical stare that should have frozen him in place. "I am perfectly relaxed, Mr. Vance, considering I was ambushed in your parking garage less than six hours ago."

Alistair chuckled, a low and dangerous sound that resonated deep within the confines of the private cabin. He reached for a crystal decanter on the mahogany table, pouring two fingers of amber bourbon into a heavy glass.

"My security detail was merely testing your instincts, Cassia, and you passed with flying colors," he replied, taking a slow sip of the liquor. "Besides, you are no longer just an auditor poking around where you shouldn't. You are my Vice President now."

"A title assigned under duress doesn't carry much legal weight," she retorted, crossing her legs with calculated elegance.

A subtle smirk touched the edges of Alistair's mouth as his amber eyes dropped briefly to her movement. The cabin door hissed shut, sealing them inside a luxurious, high-altitude cage as the jet began its taxi toward the runway.

Rodrigo, the head of Alistair's private security team and the man tasked with handling the conglomerate's darkest operational secrets, stepped out briefly from the cockpit corridor. He gave his employer a curt, silent nod before locking himself away in the secure crew compartment.

Alistair ignored Rodrigo's departure, his entire focus narrowing down to the woman sitting opposite him. As the jet engines whined to life and thrust forward down the runway, the physical distance between them suddenly felt entirely too vast.

The cabin tilted upward as the aircraft tore away from the earth, climbing steeply into the gray morning clouds. Cassia felt a brief lurch in her stomach, though whether it was from the takeoff or Alistair's intense gaze remained entirely up for debate.

"Come over here, Cassia," Alistair commanded softly, his voice dropping into a register that brook no argument. "The view from this side of the cabin is significantly better."

"I am quite comfortable where I am, thank you," she replied, her voice steady despite the rapid hammering of her heart.

Alistair didn't bother arguing with words. In one swift, fluid motion, he unbuckled his seatbelt and stood up, crossing the narrow aisle before she could even draw a breath to protest.

He dropped down onto the leather seat beside her, crowding her space until the cedarwood scent of his cologne completely enveloped her senses. Before she could shift away, he reached across her lap, his long fingers brushing against her thigh as he grabbed the metal tongue of her seatbelt.

"It seems your safety harness is malfunctioning," Alistair murmured, his face inches from hers as he loomed over her body. "Allow me to fix it for you."

Cassia froze, her breath catching in her throat as his hand lingered dangerously close to her hip. "My seatbelt is working perfectly fine, Alistair," she whispered, her voice tightening with sudden panic.

"Is it?" he whispered back, his amber eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that burned away her defenses. "Because from where I am sitting, you look like you are about to fly apart at the seams."

He leaned in closer, his broad shoulders trapping her neatly against the cabin wall and the reinforced glass window. The confined space of the private jet magnified every single micro-expression, turning a simple flight into an interrogation chamber.

"Whose side are you really on, Cassia?" Alistair asked, his voice dropping to a harsh, demanding whisper that brooked no deception. "Are you an auditor seeking justice, or a weapon aimed by someone else?"

"I am on my own side," she shot back, her emerald eyes flashing with fierce defiance despite her racing pulse. "And you know damn well I didn't orchestrate your uncle's embezzlement."

Alistair let out a low sigh, his gaze dropping to her lips before snapping back to her eyes with a predatory hunger. "Loyalty in my world is bought and paid for in blood and shares, Cassia. I want to know what currency you deal in."

"I deal in facts," she replied, raising her chin even higher to meet his aggressive proximity. "And the fact is, you need me to survive whatever civil war is brewing inside the Vance family."

Alistair chuckled again, though this time there was a raw, dangerous edge to the sound. His fingers brushed against her hip, tracing the line of her skirt with a slow, deliberate arrogance that stole the remaining air from her lungs.

To hide her sudden trembling, Cassia shifted her weight, sliding the tip of her stiletto heel upward along the outside of his tailored trouser leg. She pressed the sharp point deliberately against his thigh, feeling the muscles beneath the fabric instantly tense in response to her silent provocation.

Alistair's breath hitched, his amber eyes darkening into something feral and utterly uncontrolled. He gripped the armrest on either side of her hips, caging her completely beneath the solid weight of his torso.

"Play with fire all you want, little auditor," Alistair warned, his voice hoarse with a sudden surge of raw desire. "Just don't expect me to put the flames out when you burn."

Before she could form a sharp retort, the sharp chime of the cabin intercom echoed through the space, followed by the soft click of Rodrigo signaling from the cockpit corridor. Alistair ignored the interruption for a long moment, his gaze burning holes into her face as he fought a silent war against his own obsession.

Slowly, reluctantly, he withdrew his hand from her lap and leaned back, giving her just enough space to draw a ragged breath. The heavy tension in the cabin remained thick enough to choke on, a palpable reminder of the power dynamic shifting violently between them.

The flight progressed in heavy silence as the jet cut across the Brazilian coastline toward the sparkling blue expanse of Rio de Janeiro. Cassia stared fixedly out the window, trying to steady her breathing while Alistair sat beside her, radiating dark, unspoken energy.

Minutes before the final descent was announced over the cabin speakers, the cell phone resting on the mahogany table between them buzzed loudly against the wood. Alistair glanced down at the screen, his expression instantly shifting from smoldering heat to absolute, glacial fury.

He picked up the device, his eyes scanning an encrypted, anonymous warning sent directly from a secure relay server inside the family headquarters in São Paulo. The message was brief and chilling:

The board knows about the Rio meeting. Someone opened the safe.

Alistair's jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched violently along his cheekbone. He turned his head slowly to look at Cassia, his amber eyes flashing with a dangerous mix of suspicion and renewed obsession.

"It seems our private little getaway is no longer a secret," Alistair said, his voice dropping into an arctic chill. "Someone in my inner circle is leaking our itinerary."

"Then perhaps you should check your own security before accusing me," Cassia replied smoothly, though her own mind raced with anxiety over who else might have accessed the files.

The captain's voice broke through the cabin speakers, announcing their immediate approach to Galeão International Airport. The gentle hum of the engines changed pitch as the landing gear dropped into place, vibrating softly through the floorboards.

As the Gulfstream touched down on the tarmac with a smooth rumble, Alistair didn't wait for the flight attendants to secure the cabin door. He turned entirely toward Cassia, his massive frame blocking her only exit as the jet taxied to a halt.

With the roar of the engines echoing loudly through the fuselage during the final touchdown in Rio, Alistair gripped her waist brutally, trapping her firmly in the seat. He leaned down, his lips brushing against the shell of her ear as he delivered his final command in a raspy, uncompromising voice: "When the door opens, you're coming straight to my suite."
