"Paper Vows, Blood Debts" Chapter 3

Chapter 3: Electricity in Copacabana

The humid tropical air of Rio de Janeiro hit them like a physical wall as they descended the private stairway of the Gulfstream.

Alistair kept a firm hand positioned securely at the small of Cassia's back, guiding her down the tarmac with a proprietary grip that warned everyone nearby to keep their distance.

Waiting by the sleek black Mercedes was Rodrigo, who held the rear door open with a neutral expression trained through years of corporate warfare. Alistair slid in right beside Cassia, leaving zero physical space between them as the vehicle swept away from the private aviation hangar toward Copacabana.

The evening gala was hosted inside a sprawling, colonial-style mansion perched dramatically over the Atlantic coastline, glittering with crystal chandeliers and wealthy elites.

As Alistair and Cassia stepped out into the open-air pavilion, dozens of high-society heads turned in unison to stare at the unexpected pair.

Whispers immediately rippled through the gathered crowd of designers, politicians, and corporate magnates who had heard rumors of Alistair's sudden executive shakeup.

Cassia held her chin high, her emerald-green eyes scanning the glittering room while her emerald silk blouse caught the ambient golden light.

"Smile, Cassia," Alistair murmured near her ear, his hand sliding slightly lower against her hip to project absolute unity to the watching crowd. "You are walking through a den of wolves, and they love nothing more than the scent of fresh blood."

"I am perfectly capable of handling a few overgrown puppies in designer suits," she replied, her voice smooth and devoid of any genuine fear.

Before Alistair could offer a dry retort, a sharp, clinking sound echoed against the stem of a crystal champagne flute. Beatriz, the platinum-blonde heiress of a traditional shipping empire who had spent years trying to secure an engagement with Alistair, glided forward with a venomous smile.

"Alistair, darling, we were beginning to think you abandoned São Paulo entirely," Beatriz cooed, her gaze snapping toward Cassia with unconcealed hostility. "And who is this... delightful little temp worker you managed to drag along to a private gala?"

The insult hung heavily in the tropical air, drawing immediate attention from the nearby socialites who leaned in to watch the spectacle unfold. Cassia felt the familiar prick of irritation, but before she could open her mouth to slice Beatriz to pieces with verbal precision, Alistair stepped forward.

"Watch your tone when you speak to my Vice President, Beatriz," Alistair stated, his voice dropping into an arctic, razor-sharp register that instantly silenced the surrounding chatter.

"She is not some passing guest, and if I ever hear you question her presence again, your family's shipping contracts with Vance Global will be terminated before midnight."

Beatriz paled instantly, her painted smile fracturing under the weight of his absolute public humiliation. She stammered out a hasty apology, turning on her high heels and disappearing quickly into the sea of bewildered guests.

Cassia stared up at Alistair in genuine astonishment, surprised by the fierce, uncompromising way he had defended her honor in front of his peers.

"You didn't have to publicly destroy her career just to save my ego," she whispered, her heart skipping an unexpected beat.

"I didn't destroy her career, Cassia; I simply reminded her who owns this room," Alistair replied softly, his amber eyes softening as he looked down at her. "Nobody insults the woman standing by my side."

The lingering tension of the public confrontation hung heavily between them as Rodrigo discreetly escorted them away from the crowded pavilion. Within twenty minutes, the Mercedes had pulled up to the private elevator of the coastal presidential suite, whisking them up away from the noise of the city.

The moment the heavy penthouse door clicked shut behind them, locking out the rest of the world, the fragile restraint they had maintained all evening completely shattered.

Alistair backed Cassia against the solid wooden door, caging her in with both arms as his dark gaze devoured her face.

"You played with fire back there, letting Beatriz provoke you into looking so dangerously breathtaking," Alistair growled, his voice thick with a sudden, suffocating wave of passion.

"She was the one throwing stones, Alistair," Cassia breathed out, her hands resting flat against the crisp fabric of his chest as she felt his rapid heartbeat beneath her palms.

"I've wanted to tear that dress off you since the moment you stepped into my boardroom," he confessed rawly, capturing her lips with a sudden, crushing intensity that stole all remaining oxygen from her lungs.

Cassia let out a soft gasp into his mouth, but the sound was instantly swallowed by the fervor of his kiss. Her fingers curled into the fabric of his black shirt, pulling him closer as the last of her icy defenses crumbled into dust.

He lifted her effortlessly against his body, her legs wrapping instinctively around his waist as he carried her toward the expansive master bedroom overlooking the moonlit ocean. Every lingering doubt, every hidden agenda, and every ounce of bitter rivalry dissolved into the heat of their desperate collision.

The moonlight spilled across the white silk sheets as Alistair pressed her down into the mattress, his hands mapping the curves of her body with a reverence that bordered on worship.

Cassia arched into his touch, her fingers digging into his shoulders as she surrendered her heart entirely to the chaotic storm of his embrace.

Hours later, the penthouse grew deathly quiet, save for the rhythmic crash of the Atlantic waves against the shore far below.

Alistair lay fast asleep beside her on the tangled sheets, his chest rising and falling in slow, heavy rhythms, entirely stripped of the cold armor he wore to face the world.

Cassia sat up slowly in the dim light of the Rio dawn, her breath catching in her throat as she looked down at his sleeping face. She wore one of his discarded black silk shirts, the oversized fabric hanging loosely over her shoulders as she swung her legs quietly over the side of the bed.

Remembering the master biometrics scanner hidden behind the art installation in his private study, she slipped out of the bedroom like a silent ghost.

Moving with absolute precision, she approached the biometric lock, using Alistair's sleeping thumbprint—which she had carefully replicated using a silicone mold earlier that morning—to bypass the final security wall of the safe.

The heavy steel door clicked open with a soft mechanical hiss, revealing the original, unredacted paper trail that would finally prove the Vance family's direct involvement in her father's ruin. Yet, as she stared down at the documents in her trembling hands, her emerald eyes filled with a tearing conflict of agonizing pain and suffocating guilt.
