"Paper Vows, Blood Debts" Chapter 10
Chapter 10: Carioca Carnival and Surrender
The warm golden sunlight of Rio de Janeiro flooded through the open terrace doors, washing away the cold shadows that had haunted the penthouse in São Paulo. Outside, the vibrant rhythm of distant samba drums drifted up from the Copacabana coastline, blending with the rhythmic crash of turquoise waves.
Cassia stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass doors, wearing a fluid white silk sundress that caught the tropical breeze. The heavy burden of her past and the bitter crusade of vengeance that had consumed her youth finally felt like a distant, faded memory.
Alistair walked up behind her, wrapping his arms securely around her waist to pull her back against his chest. He looked entirely different from the shattered man who had broken down in the dark living room days ago, his amber eyes bright and clear under the Brazilian sun.
"The cars are waiting downstairs," Alistair murmured, pressing a soft kiss against the sensitive skin just below her ear. "Are you ready to face the brightest beach in the world, my love?"
Cassia turned in his embrace, resting her hands against the lapels of his lightweight linen shirt with a teasing smile. "If anyone tries to ruin this party, Mr. Vance, I expect you to handle them with your usual corporate ruthlessness."
"Every corporate predator in the country is currently either in a federal prison or too terrified of us to show their faces," Alistair chuckled, a rich, genuine sound that reached his eyes. "Today belongs exclusively to us."
Within the hour, they arrived at a secluded, cliffside estate overlooking the crescent curve of Copacabana beach. The celebration was an exclusive gathering of trusted allies, lit by festive lanterns and framed by lush tropical foliage under a brilliant azure sky.
As they stepped onto the sunlit terrace, a cheer went up from the small circle of guests, including Carlos and a few loyal executives who had helped them dismantle Uncle Victor's cartel.
Cassia smiled warmly, accepting a glass of chilled champagne while Alistair kept a proprietary hand resting firmly against the small of her back.
"You look breathtaking against the ocean, Cassia," Carlos remarked politely as he raised his glass in a silent toast to their victory. "The entire financial district is still trying to process how quickly the board was restructured."
"Tell them the new administration values transparency over corruption," Cassia replied smoothly, clinking her glass against his with a bright laugh.
The festive atmosphere swelled as local musicians began playing lively samba rhythms on acoustic guitars and percussion drums. The air grew thick with the scent of sea salt, grilled delicacies, and blooming hibiscus flowers dancing on the tropical wind.
Alistair watched Cassia with an expression of absolute, unvarnished devotion that defied every cold rule he had lived by. He had spent his entire life treating human beings like variables in an equation, but she had completely rewritten the fundamental math of his existence.

"Dance with me," Alistair whispered, taking the champagne glass from her hand and setting it down on a passing tray.
"In front of half the business elite of South America?" she teased, though her emerald eyes danced with sudden excitement. "Whatever happened to your legendary corporate discretion?"
"Let them talk," Alistair murmured, pulling her smoothly into the rhythm of the music as the guests parted to give them space.
They moved together across the stone terrace, the vibrant Copacabana breeze catching the fabric of her white dress as he spun her outward and reeled her back in.
Alistair surrendered completely to the music and the moment, his hand sliding up to cradle the back of her neck as he pulled her flush against his chest.
"I never knew what it meant to belong to a place until I found you," Alistair confessed softly, his voice dropping below the volume of the drums. "São Paulo was just a cage I ruled, but you made it a home."
"You built that cage yourself, Alistair," Cassia whispered back, smiling up at him with utter tenderness. "I simply helped you tear down the bars."
As the afternoon sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of violet, gold, and crimson, the celebration shifted toward the shoreline.
Fireworks erupted over the Atlantic, casting brilliant showers of red and silver light across the dark ocean waves.
The guests gathered on the wide sandy beach, laughing and watching the colorful display light up the tropical night. Amid the brilliant flashes of light and the thunderous roar of the celebratory pyrotechnics, Alistair stepped away from the crowd, pulling Cassia gently toward a secluded spot near the tide line.
Cassia turned to look at him, her breath hitching slightly as she saw the unusual vulnerability shining in his luminous amber eyes. Without a single word of hesitation, Alistair dropped slowly to one knee in the cool sand.
The sparkling reflections of the fireworks danced across his sharp jawline as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. He flipped the lid open with steady fingers, revealing a magnificent diamond ring that caught every flicker of light from the sky above.
"You already carry my soul and my legacy in your hands, Cassia," Alistair spoke clearly, his voice carrying effortlessly over the sound of the crashing waves. "Will you do me the honor of wearing my ring and ruling this empire by my side for the rest of our days?"
Tears of pure, overwhelming joy pricked at the corners of Cassia's eyes, washing away every remaining shadow of her complicated past. She nodded rapidly, her voice thick with emotion as she whispered her absolute surrender. "Yes, Alistair. Yes, a thousand times yes."
Alistair slid the heavy diamond band onto her ring finger, sealing the promise with a reverence that defied his formidable reputation. With fireworks illuminating the Copacabana night, Alistair kissed Cassia's ring finger and declared, "Cassia, my soul and my empire belong entirely to you."
