"The Vulture's Captive" Chapter 4
Chapter 04: The Red Carpet Trap
The crystal chandeliers of the grand ballroom blazed with a blinding, opulent light that spilled over the elite of Chicago.
Aurelia descended the sweeping marble staircase on Viktor's arm, her presence instantly demanding the collective attention of the room.
She wore a long, liquid crimson silk gown that clung to her curves like a second skin, its high slit revealing her slender leg with every step.
Her platinum-white hair was swept back into a sleek, aristocratic chignon that exposed the delicate line of her ivory throat.
Viktor escorted her in a custom-tailored black tuxedo that accentuated his broad shoulders and the lethal, unyielding posture of a Bratva Pakhan.
To the glittering crowd below, they appeared to be the ultimate power couple holding court over the city's highest financial circles.
"Smile, little bird," Viktor murmured near her ear, his lips brushing the sensitive skin while his icy-grey eyes remained fixed on the crowd. "You are representing the Volkov name tonight, not mourning a funeral."
"I reserve my smiles for things that do not resemble a gilded cage, Viktor," Aurelia replied smoothly, keeping her expression locked in a polite, chilling mask.
"You look breathtaking in red," Viktor whispered, a dark, possessive heat flashing behind his frozen gaze as he pulled her closer to his side. "And every man in this room is currently committing a capital sin by looking at what belongs exclusively to me."
"You bought a debt, Viktor, not a soul," she retorted, her violet-blue eyes flashing with quiet rebellion as they reached the crowded ballroom floor.
Before Viktor could issue another cold warning, a familiar, polished voice cut through the ambient chatter of clinking champagne flutes.
"Aurelia? By all that is holy, is that truly my favorite niece?" a smooth, gravelly voice inquired from the edge of the VIP circle.
Senator Marcus Vance stepped forward, his silver hair neatly styled and his expensive suit tailored to hide a lifetime of political corruption.
He was Aurelia’s distant uncle, a man who had gladly watched her father drown in debt while quietly positioning himself to pick clean the remnants of their estate.
"Hello, Uncle Marcus," Aurelia said, her voice dropping instantly to a sub-zero temperature as she faced the man who had abandoned her family.
Marcus offered a warm, utterly fake smile, his eyes lingering on the liquid crimson silk of her gown with an unsettling, appraising evaluation.
"You look magnificent, despite the tragic downfall of your father's business empire," Marcus said, stepping uncomfortably close to her bare shoulder. "I hear you are living in high luxury now with our ruthless Russian friend."
"My life is none of your concern, Marcus," Aurelia replied, her chin tilting upward with a sharp defensive edge.
"Actually, my dear niece, it is very much my concern," Marcus whispered, leaning in closer while sliding a hand toward her uncovered arm. "Washington needs allies inside the Volkov syndicate, and who better than a Vance to act as my eyes and ears?"

Before Marcus's fingers could brush her skin, a heavy, vice-like grip slammed down onto the senator's shoulder.
The sudden intervention caused Marcus to gasp in shock, stumbling backward a full step as he looked up into a face carved from sheer terror.
Viktor stood towering over the older politician, his icy-grey eyes completely stripped of any human warmth, burning with a lethal, primitive fury.
"Touch her again, Senator, and your next campaign rally will be held inside a federal penitentiary," Viktor rasped, his voice a low, murderous threat.
"Now, wait just a moment, Volkov," Marcus stammered, his face turning pale as he felt the absolute crushing weight of the Bratva leader's hand. "We are family, we were simply exchanging pleasantries between old acquaintances."
"The pleasantries are concluded," Viktor snapped, yanking Aurelia flush against his chest with a violent, possessive jerk. "Leave my sight before I forget you share her blood."
Marcus swallowed hard, offering a nervous nod before turning on his heel and fleeing into the safety of the surrounding crowd.
Without offering a single word of explanation to the gaping onlookers nearby, Viktor spun Aurelia around and began dragging her away from the ballroom.
He marched her rapidly through the gilded archways, cutting down a quiet, dimly lit corridor designated exclusively for high-security VIP access.
The ambient music and chatter faded into a dull, muffled thrum as they plunged deeper into the stone bowels of the historic hotel.
Viktor shoved open a heavy oak door marked as a private security vestibule, dragging her inside before slamming the latch shut with a deafening bang.
The small room was bathed in the red glow of emergency exit lights and the hum of server racks, creating a claustrophobic, high-tension bunker.
"Have you completely lost your mind?" Aurelia exploded, wrenching her wrist free from his bruising grip and stepping back against the metal-reinforced door. "Making a public scene with a sitting senator!"
"He touched you," Viktor snarled, towering over her with his chest heaving under the ruined stillness of his posture. "That corrupt parasite dared to put his hands on my wife in broad daylight."
"I am not your wife, Viktor, I am your hostage," Aurelia shouted back, her violet eyes blazing with an intoxicating, reckless fire. "You do not own me, no matter how many checks you sign."
"I own every breath you take, Aurelia," Viktor roared, losing the last shred of his corporate composure as a dark, feral rage took over his features.
Before she could anticipate his movement, Viktor lunged forward with the speed of a striking predator, pinning her shoulders firmly against the metal door.
The sheer force of his impact knocked the breath from her lungs, leaving her gasping in the charged air of the dim security room.
"You think you can defy me in public, flirting with politicians while wearing my ring?" Viktor growled, his voice trembling with a toxic cocktail of fury and raw, untamed desire.

"I was not flirting, you paranoid monster," Aurelia spat, tilting her chin up to meet his glare with an unwavering defiance. "He wanted a spy, and I told him no."
"You belong only to me," Viktor muttered darkly, his gaze dropping like a falling stone to the exposed skin of her collarbone.
Without warning, Viktor lowered his head and clamped his teeth violently over the delicate silk strap of her crimson gown.
The sharp sound of fabric tearing apart echoed loudly in the small room as the heavy silk gave way under the assault of his teeth.
Aurelia gasped sharply as the emerald-red strap snapped, leaving her shoulder completely bared to the cold air and his burning touch.
"Viktor, stop this!" she cried out, her hands flying to shove against his hard chest with all the frantic strength she possessed.
"No," Viktor breathed heavily against her bare skin, his lips pressing a hot, bruising kiss directly into the hollow of her collarbone.
The contrast between the violent destruction of her dress and the feverish heat of his mouth sent a terrifying, electric shock through her veins.
His large hands gripped the remaining fabric of her gown, tearing it slightly further down to expose the lace of her undergarment beneath.
Aurelia felt her breath hitch, her body betraying her mind as a traitorous wave of heat washed over her skin in the dark, restricted space.
She tried to fight him off, but her punches against his broad shoulders felt like nothing more than soft rain against a mountain of granite.
Right through the half-open security door behind them, a sharp, sudden flash of bright white light cut across the dim red gloom.
The subtle, distinctive click of a camera shutter broke through the heavy panting of their struggle, echoing from the empty VIP hallway outside.
Aurelia froze instantly, her blood turning to ice as she stared wide-eyed toward the sliver of space opening into the corridor.
A hidden photographer, planted by one of Viktor's political enemies or Bratva rivals, had just captured the raw, violent intimacy of their private war.
"Viktor... someone is out there," Aurelia whispered frantically, her hands gripping his arms as she pointed toward the partially cracked door.
Viktor stopped his movements abruptly, his head snapping around toward the light with the lethal precision of a wolf smelling a trap.
He cursed softly in Russian, releasing her shoulders and turning swiftly toward the door to hunt down the intruder.
Before Viktor could pull the door open, Aurelia used the momentary distraction to shove his chest back with all the fury left inside her.
She reached up with trembling fingers, quickly gathering the torn silk of her crimson gown to pin it crudely against her exposed shoulder.
Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs, but the outward mask of the East Coast ice queen slammed back down over her features with absolute perfection.
"If you ever touch me like that in public again, Viktor, I will ensure the entire world sees what kind of animal runs the Bratva," Aurelia hissed, her voice vibrating with cold, deadly venom.
Viktor stared at her, his chest still heaving, the wild beast in his eyes slowly retreating behind the walls of his calculated, icy demeanor.
Without waiting for his response, Aurelia pushed past him, opening the heavy security door and stepping out into the bright corridor.
She straightened her spine, smoothed the ruined fabric of her dress as best as she could, and marched back toward the grand ballroom with her head held exceptionally high.
