"The Vulture's Captive" Chapter 6
Chapter 06: Shattered Glass
The heavy oak door of the study clicked shut with a finality that sounded like a prison gate locking forever.
Aurelia walked back into the master bedroom, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
The brief glimpse inside that hidden wall safe had exposed the foundation of her entire misery.
Viktor remained in the shadows of the study, but the heavy silence between them was suddenly too fragile to hold.
Heavy footsteps echoed across the marble floor as Viktor followed her out into the vast, dimly lit bedroom.
"You should not have gone looking for ghosts in my vault, Aurelia," Viktor said, his voice dangerously low.
Aurelia turned around to face him, her eyes flashing with a cold, blinding fury that refused to be contained.
"Ghosts?" Aurelia spat the word out like poison, her voice trembling with a terrifying realization. "Those were not ghosts, Viktor. Those were blueprints for my destruction."
"They were business transactions," Viktor replied coldly, stepping closer to her under the pale amber light.
"You engineered my father's financial collapse four years ago," Aurelia accused, her voice breaking under the weight of the betrayal. "You bought his debts before he even met you."
Viktor did not deny the accusation, his icy-grey eyes locking onto hers with a chilling, unapologetic certainty.
"I did," Viktor confessed, the words falling into the empty space between them like blocks of solid ice.
"Why?" Aurelia screamed, her hands curling into tight fists at her sides as her voice cracked with agony. "Why destroy a family that never even knew your name?"
"Because I saw you across a crowded ballroom in New York when you were twenty," Viktor murmured, his voice laced with a dark, obsessive hunger. "You were wearing an emerald dress, and you laughed with a brightness that mocked the darkness of my entire world."
"So you ruined us?" Aurelia breathed, her chest rising and falling in rapid, violent spasms of disbelief. "You orchestrated my father's downfall just to make sure he had nowhere else to turn?"
"Arthur Vance was a gambling addict and a reckless fool who would have lost everything anyway," Viktor said with ruthless pragmatism. "I merely accelerated the timeline and ensured the pieces fell precisely where I wanted them."
"You are a monster," Aurelia whispered, tears of pure rage spilling over her lashes to track down her pale cheeks. "A clinical, calculating monster who treats human lives like chess pieces."
"I am whatever I need to be to keep you under my roof," Viktor answered without a shred of remorse.
Aurelia let out a choked, desperate cry of pure anguish that tore straight from the bottom of her soul.
She lunged forward, beating her fists repeatedly against his broad chest with all the frantic strength she possessed.
"You ruined my life!" she sobbed, striking him again and again while Viktor stood completely still, refusing to move an inch. "You stole my future, you murdered my family's legacy, and you trapped me in this gilded hell!"

Viktor let her strike him, taking the blows as if they were a penance he willingly accepted for his sins.
Finally, his large hands shot out to catch her wrists, pinning her arms firmly against his sides to stop the storm of her blows.
"Let me go!" Aurelia wept, struggling wildly against his iron grip with every ounce of oxygen in her lungs. "I hate you! Do you hear me? I loathe every breath you take!"
"Hate me all you want, Aurelia," Viktor whispered fiercely against her hair, his own voice tightening with an edge of desperation. "Just do not ever ask me to let you go."
Aurelia wrenched her hands free with a sudden, violent twist, stumbling backward away from his suffocating touch.
She rushed toward the ornate mahogany dresser where the legal documents of their forced union rested neatly in a silver tray.
She snatched the marriage certificate from the surface, her fingers tearing aggressively through the official heavy paper.
She ripped the document into halves, then quarters, and finally into a blizzard of tiny white paper scraps.
"I would rather burn in hell than spend another second with you!" Aurelia screamed, hurling the paper confetti directly into his face.
Without waiting for his response, she turned on her heel and bolted toward the private elevator with desperate speed.
She slammed her palm against the call button, watching the indicator light blink slowly while the mechanism groaned to life.
"Aurelia, stop!" Viktor commanded, stepping forward out of the shadows with an expression of sudden, unmasked panic.
The elevator doors slid open with a soft chime, offering her an immediate escape route away from the nightmare of the penthouse.
Aurelia did not look back, diving past the threshold and mashing the button for the ground floor with a trembling finger.
She ignored her heavy winter coat, fleeing the thirty-first floor dressed only in her silk slip and bare feet.
The elevator dropped like a stone, rushing down through the heart of the tower as the digital numbers flashed rapidly downward.
When the doors finally parted at the lobby level, the night security guard opened his mouth to speak, but she blew past him like a winter ghost.
She threw open the heavy glass doors of the lobby, stepping directly out into the brutal, freezing Chicago snowstorm.
The sub-zero wind hit her skin like a wall of solid ice, instantly stealing the breath from her lungs.
She ran barefoot across the slush-covered pavement, her tears freezing instantly on her cheeks as she vanished into the howling white tempest of the night.
Back in the quiet emptiness of the master suite, Viktor stood alone among the drifting white scraps of the torn marriage certificate scattered across the marble floor.
He dropped slowly to his knees, his large hands brushing against the paper fragments of a bond that had just been shattered beyond repair.
The absolute silence of the penthouse pressed down upon him like a tomb as the winter storm raged on outside the glass.
