"The Vulture's Captive" Chapter 9

Chapter 09: The Blood Oath

The private jet touched down on the rain-slicked tarmac of Chicago Midway Airport under the heavy, bruised skies of a restless dawn.

Aurelia stepped off the private ramp wrapped in a heavy black cashmere coat, her posture radiating an untouchable, glacial authority.

The bruised ghost who had sprinted barefoot through the Boston snowstorm was entirely gone, replaced by a ruthless sovereign.

Viktor walked a half-step behind her in total silence, his tailored dark suit once again pristine, yet his demeanor entirely transformed.

He no longer looked like an untouchable tyrant; he looked like a man who had willingly handed over the keys to his own execution.

They rode the private elevator straight to the executive penthouse of Volkov Logistics without exchanging a single word during the entire ascent.

The heavy oak doors of Viktor's private study swung open, revealing the massive mahogany desk where the war of their destinies had begun.

Aurelia walked straight to the center of the room, her high heels striking the marble floor with deliberate, echoing authority.

"Sit down, Viktor," Aurelia commanded, her voice cutting through the quiet space like a freshly sharpened blade.

Viktor did not hesitate, walking around the desk and pulling out the high-backed leather chair, gesturing for her to take it.

Instead of sitting in the subordinate seat she had occupied weeks ago, Aurelia walked straight to the head-of-board chair.

She seated herself with supreme grace, resting her hands flat against the polished dark wood of the massive executive desk.

Viktor did not reclaim his seat; instead, he stepped directly behind her chair, standing like a loyal, lethal guardian watching over his queen.

"You brought me back from Boston not to lock me away, but to negotiate," Viktor stated, his gravelly voice dropping to a low rumble.

"I did not come back to be your prisoner, Viktor," Aurelia said, her violet-blue eyes flashing with cold, calculated brilliance. "I came back to take my rightful place as the architect of this syndicate."

She slid a single document across the polished mahogany surface directly into his line of sight.

"Sign over fifty percent of all Volkov Syndicate voting shares to my legal name," Aurelia demanded, her tone absolute and unyielding. "That is my ultimatum."

The document represented half of an underground empire built on blood, extortion, and billions of dollars in illicit global assets.

Any other Bratva Pakhan would have laughed, drawn a weapon, or thrown her out of the penthouse for daring to utter such treason.

Viktor didn't even blink, his icy-grey eyes staring down at the parchment without a single flicker of hesitation or regret.

He reached into his inner suit pocket, pulled out a heavy gold fountain pen, and uncapped it with a sharp click.

Without reading a single line of the legal clauses, Viktor leaned over her shoulder and scrawled his signature across the dotted line.

The scratch of the pen against paper sounded loud and final in the dead silence of the executive study.

"Done," Viktor murmured softly against her hair, his breath warm and steady against the sensitive skin of her neck.

Aurelia looked down at the signature, a deep shock rippling briefly through her chest before her iron composure locked back into place.

"You signed away half your empire in three seconds without a second thought," Aurelia whispered, turning her head slightly to meet his gaze.

"I would burn the other half to ash if it meant keeping you within arm's reach," Viktor replied, his voice dripping with absolute, terrifying devotion.

Before Aurelia could respond, a deafening crash echoed from the outer hallway, shattering the heavy silence of the penthouse suite.

The double doors leading to the executive reception area burst open under the force of a violent, coordinated kick.

Heavy boots slammed against the marble flooring as a dozen armed men surged into the outer suite with weapons drawn.

Dmitri Volkov, Viktor's sixty-two-year-old corrupt uncle and senior council member, marched at the front of the mutinous horde.

Dmitri’s face was twisted into a malicious snarl, his silver hair disheveled and his eyes gleaming with the triumph of a successful coup.

"The board meeting is officially over, nephew," Dmitri barked, stepping into the doorway of the private study with a heavy pistol raised. "Your reign of reckless obsession ends today."

The senior council members and corrupt captains spilled into the room behind Dmitri, blocking every possible exit route with tactical precision.

Aurelia remained seated in the head-of-board chair, her posture remaining perfectly calm as she surveyed the armed traitors invading their sanctuary.

She did not flinch, nor did she reach for protection, knowing instinctively that the apex predator standing behind her chair had been waiting for this exact bloodbath.

Viktor straightened his posture slowly, his towering frame casting a dark, menacing shadow over Aurelia's shoulders.

The lethal, unblinking glare in his icy-grey eyes returned with a vengeance, stripping away the vulnerability he had shown by the ocean.

"You should have stayed in St. Petersburg, Uncle," Viktor said, his voice dropping into a chilling, subterranean register of pure violence.

"You handed half the syndicate to an outsider, Viktor!" Dmitri yelled, gesturing wildly with his pistol toward the signed document on the desk. "The council has voted unanimously to strip your title and liquidate your entire asset portfolio."

"The council does not own this empire," Viktor snarled, resting his hand casually over the holster concealed beneath his suit jacket. "We built it on the bones of traitors like you."

Dmitri raised his weapon higher, locking his sights directly onto Viktor's chest with a cold, murderous grin.

"Kill them both and secure the ledgers," Dmitri ordered the armed enforcers standing behind him in the crowded hallway.

Before the first mercenary could raise his rifle barrel, Viktor moved with the terrifying speed of an unchained predator.

He slammed his heavy foot against the mahogany door, forcing the massive double panels to swing shut with a thunderous crash.

With a rapid twist of the deadbolt lock from the inside, Viktor secured the heavy oak doors against the incoming wave of attackers.

Aurelia watched him calmly, her heart beating in a steady, exhilarating rhythm as the sound of muffled shouts echoed from the corridor outside.

Viktor turned around slowly, a dark, bloodthirsty smirk spreading across his lips as he pulled his heavy sidearm from its concealed holster.

"Let them come," Viktor whispered, locking eyes with Aurelia as he clicked the safety off with a sharp metallic snap. "Today we burn the entire council."
