"The Vulture's Captive" Chapter 10
Chapter 10: The Digital Bloodbath
The heavy oak doors of the private study shuddered under the violent impact of rifle butts slamming against the exterior frame from the hallway.
Bullets punched straight through the thick wood panels in a blinding burst of splinters, hissing through the air to embed themselves deep into the mahogany bookshelves.
Viktor shoved Aurelia down behind the reinforced steel barrier of the executive desk with ruthless, protective speed.
"Stay low and keep the terminals alive," Viktor commanded, his voice dead calm as he raised his sidearm and fired three precise shots right through the splintered gaps in the door.
A muffled cry of pain echoed from the corridor outside, followed by the heavy thud of a mercenary collapsing against the marble floor.
"I am not hiding anywhere, Viktor," Aurelia replied, her fingers already flying across the illuminated mechanical keys of her encrypted laptop.
Before the assault could breach the locks, the entire skyscraper plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness as a city-wide electrical blackout hit downtown Chicago.
The glowing blue emergency strips along the floor cast a dim, eerie illumination over the chaotic battlefield of the private study.
"Dmitri cut the main grid to disable our security servers," Aurelia whispered sharply, her eyes darting across multiple glowing monitors. "He is trying to freeze our corporate accounts and transfer fifty million dollars to an offshore Cayman holding."
"Let him try," Viktor growled, reloading his weapon with practiced efficiency in the dark while keeping watch over the barricaded doorway. "He forgot who wrote the security protocols for this entire network."
A secure encrypted chat window flashed green in the corner of Aurelia's primary display screen, accompanied by a rapid data stream.
It was Elena Volkov, Dmitri's twenty-three-year-old rebellious daughter who hated her father's criminal syndicate enough to aid in his destruction.
The firewall on the Swiss server is dropping now,
Elena's text message flickered across the dark screen.
Use the Vance corporate routing key to bypass his master node.
"I have a backdoor courtesy of Elena," Aurelia announced, her voice steady and razor-sharp amidst the distant sound of shouting mercenaries outside.
"Use it," Viktor murmured, stepping closer until his tall frame hovered directly behind her chair in the shadows.
Aurelia punched in the complex alphanumeric sequence, her fingers moving at lightning speed to dismantle her uncle's financial fortress layer by layer.
"He is moving the capital right now," Aurelia said, her breath hitching as she tracked the live transfer protocols across the monitor. "If I do not override the routing matrix in thirty seconds, we lose control of the liquidity pool."
"You will not lose," Viktor whispered against her skin, leaning down to press a hot, lingering kiss directly into the sensitive curve of her throat.
The unexpected intimacy sent an electric, high-voltage jolt of desire racing through her veins even as bullets continued to ricochet off the reinforced steel door frame.

"Viktor, focus, he is draining the accounts," Aurelia gasped, her fingers stuttering slightly against the keyboard under the sudden assault of his lips.
"I am completely focused on the only prize that matters," Viktor murmured darkly, his hand sliding over hers to steady her trembling index finger above the enter key.
"Now, Aurelia," Viktor commanded softly into her ear.
She slammed her finger down onto the master execution key, triggering an automated script that swept through Dmitri's offshore accounts like a financial tsunami.
Lines of digital green code cascaded down the monitors as every single dollar, asset, and shell company belonging to the traitorous uncle was systematically wiped and redirected back into their joint holding.
"Account zeroed," Aurelia whispered in triumph, leaning back against Viktor's chest as the final confirmation prompt flashed on the screen. "Dmitri is completely bankrupt."
Outside in the hallway, the sound of hammering boots abruptly stopped as Dmitri's mercenaries received frantic comms calls regarding their vanishing bank accounts.
"We lost everything! The old man's accounts are empty!" a panicked voice shouted from the corridor before the footsteps scrambled away in total disarray.
Viktor looked down at the glowing screens, a lethal, satisfied smile touching the corners of his lips in the dark.
"Check the backup satellite logs," Viktor instructed, his hand still resting possessively on her shoulder. "Dmitri did not come here just to die; he came to salvage what was left of his physical empire."
Aurelia quickly executed a diagnostic query on the external security cameras linked to the ground-level underground garage.
A secure text notification popped up on her screen from a secondary encrypted informant embedded within the municipal transit police.
Anonymous tip: Dmitri Volkov just breached the private airfield hangar on the industrial lakefront,
the message read clearly.
He is carrying a secure metal briefcase containing physical bearer bonds and your father's original debt receipts.
Aurelia turned her head to look up at Viktor, her violet-blue eyes meeting his piercing grey gaze through the dim emergency glow.
"He has the physical receipts of my father's debts," Aurelia stated, her voice dropping to a dangerous, resolute whisper. "The last pieces of paper he used to build this entire nightmare."
Viktor straightened up to his full height, his expression hardening into an absolute mask of unyielding vengeance.
"Then we are going to collect what belongs to us," Viktor declared, reaching into his pocket to retrieve a set of heavy metallic keys.
He walked swiftly over to the glass coffee table where his sports car keys rested beside a crystal decanter of bourbon.
Viktor grabbed the keys with a sharp metallic clatter, spinning around to face Aurelia across the dimly lit expanse of the shattered study.
He looked at her with an intensity that burned hotter than any fire, sealing their transformation from captor and captive into an unstoppable, high-society Bonnie and Clyde.
"Let us finish what we started," Viktor growled, his voice echoing through the dark penthouse as they marched side-by-side toward the private elevator.
