"I Keep Waking Up in My Straight Roommate's Arms" Chapter 14
Adrian had crossed the country for eighteen hours, and Noah refused to waste them sleeping.
This principle lasted until 2:36 a.m., when he woke with his face pressed to Adrian's shoulder and one leg tangled between Adrian's beneath the narrow dorm blanket.
The room looked smaller with half its contents boxed. Noah's canvases were gone from the walls, leaving clean rectangles in the dust. Adrian's old desk stood empty. Graduation cords hung from the bedpost beside the green sweater Noah had worn to the exhibition.
Adrian was awake.
"You're doing it again," Noah murmured.
"Doing what?"
"Watching the ceiling instead of sleeping."
"I have to leave in two hours."
"That is an argument for sleep."
"It is an argument for memorizing this."
Noah lifted his head. "The ceiling?"
"You."
Months ago, such a sentence would have cost Adrian visible pain. Now he said it quietly, without retreating from the tenderness.
Noah traced the line of his collarbone. "I look the same on video."
"No."
"Rude."
"On video, I cannot feel you steal the blanket."
"I'm preserving realism."
Adrian smiled. The expression faded too soon.
"What happens after September?" he asked.
"I move into the apartment. We argue about where my easel goes. You discover that paint gets on every surface no matter what I promise."
"I meant after the residency."
Noah understood. Six months had an end point. Their lives after it did not.
"I don't know," he said.
Adrian's body went still beneath him.
"I have applications in New York and Providence. There may be gallery work in Los Angeles. You don't know where the national program leads either."
"I could choose a club near wherever you go."
"There. That." Noah pushed himself upright. "You are doing it again."
"Considering you in my plans?"
"Making yourself smaller before anyone asks."
Adrian sat against the wall. "A relationship requires compromise."
"Yes. Mutual compromise. Based on real choices, not preemptive surrender."
"You say that because your career could exist in several cities."
"And yours could end with one injury. That doesn't mean we build our future around the worst possibility."
The words landed badly. Adrian's jaw locked.
Noah took a breath. "I'm not saying rowing matters less."
"You called it temporary."
"I called uncertainty real."
Adrian moved to the edge of the bed. "My flight—"
"Don't leave angry."
"I am not angry."
"Left eyebrow."
Adrian looked toward the window. Dawn had begun to pale the glass.
Noah knelt behind him and rested his forehead between Adrian's shoulder blades. "I'm scared too."
Adrian's breathing changed.
"I'm scared I'll move in and become an accessory to your training," Noah said. "I'm scared my residency won't lead anywhere. I'm scared we survived distance because every call was precious, then we'll ruin it over dishes."
Adrian turned. "Why haven't you said that?"
"I thought one of us should appear emotionally stable."
"You chose yourself?"
"Poorly."

Adrian drew him close. For a minute they sat without solving anything.
"Separate rooms," Adrian said.
Noah leaned back. "What?"
"The apartment has two bedrooms. One is your studio. One is ours. But if you need a room that belongs only to you, we keep both as bedrooms and rent studio space."
"You already paid a deposit."
"The lease can be changed."
"And your schedule?"
"I will post it. You will post yours. Neither becomes the default around which the other must orbit."
Noah considered him. "Who taught you words like orbit?"
"You did. Repeatedly."
"What about after the residency?"
"We make the decision when we have the facts." Adrian took his hand. "I will not offer up my future before you ask. You will not treat every compromise as self-erasure. Agreed?"
"Agreed."
At four thirty they rode to the airport in a nearly empty cab. Noah kept his hand inside Adrian's coat pocket because neither had gloves.
At security, Adrian kissed him once, then again.
"You'll miss your flight," Noah said.
"I have twelve minutes."
"The schedule survives."
"Barely."
Adrian disappeared beyond the checkpoint. Noah stood until he could no longer see him.
On the ride back, his phone buzzed.
Adrian: Eighteen hours was worth it.
Noah: Even the argument?
Adrian: Especially the argument.
Noah smiled at the waking city outside the window.
The answer felt more like a promise than anything either of them had said about forever.
Graduation the next morning arrived in steady rain. Adrian watched the ceremony through a video call propped on Marcus's empty chair. The connection froze as Noah crossed the stage, capturing him mid-blink with his diploma raised.
"You missed the dignified part," Noah said afterward.
"Marcus recorded it."
"Marcus filmed his own thumb for the first forty seconds."
"I saw enough."
Noah's parents joined the call. His mother thanked Adrian for "keeping Noah alive through senior year," which made Noah object and Adrian look privately pleased. His father gave Adrian a formal nod.
"California is expensive," he said.
"I made a budget," Adrian replied.
Noah laughed. The two of them might understand each other after all.
That evening, alone in the emptied suite, Noah made milk in the saucepan Adrian had left behind. He drank from the blue mug and sat on the floor where their couch had been.
The room no longer felt shaped like absence. It felt like a completed chapter.
