"He Took Every Dollar—Until I Took Everything Back" Chapter 9
Finally, she chose a twenty-four-hour diner outside Decatur, forty minutes from Victor Shaw's headquarters.
Lena arrived first.
Claire came five minutes later.
Rachel entered at 8:17 that evening wearing jeans, a gray sweater, and the expression of someone who had checked her rearview mirror the entire drive.
She slid into the booth.
"Did anyone follow you?"
Lena glanced toward the window.
"No."
Rachel looked at Claire.
"Phones."
Claire frowned.
"What about them?"
"Turn them off."
Claire did.
Lena followed.
Only then did Rachel remove a small flash drive from her purse.
She kept it in her hand.
"I worked for Victor for eight years."
Claire opened a notebook.
"You were finance director?"
"Controller first. Then director of finance."
"Why were you fired?"
Rachel gave a bitter laugh.
"Officially? Performance issues."
"And unofficially?"
"I refused to process fake invoices."
Lena leaned forward.
"What kind of invoices?"
Rachel looked at her for the first time.
"You really don't know what Victor was doing, do you?"
"That's why we're here."
Rachel wrapped both hands around her coffee cup.
"Victor wanted the Reed Hospitality account long before you came along. He'd already cut his pricing twice."
"Maya told me."
"He was furious when Marcus wouldn't move."
Rachel glanced toward the door.
"Then you appeared."
Lena's jaw tightened.
"Victor started asking questions. Who were you? How much were you producing? Where did you get your recipes? Did you have investors?"
"How did Dale get involved?"
"Victor found him."
That answer surprised Lena.
She had assumed Dale approached Victor.
Rachel shook her head.
"One of Victor's salespeople found an old local business registration connected to your mother's cart. Dale's name appeared on an address record."
"So Victor contacted him."
"Yes."
Rachel looked down.
"After that, everything moved fast."
She finally placed the flash drive on the table.
Claire reached for it.
Rachel pulled it back.
"These are only samples."
"Samples of what?"
"Emails."
Rachel took several printed pages from her purse.
Claire read the first.
Then the second.
Her expression changed.
She handed them to Lena.
The first email was from Victor.
Dale, if she believes she can succeed without you, she'll never sign. Pressure has to affect the business, not just the girl.
Lena read it again.
The girl.
Not Lena.
Not a business owner.
A problem.
The second message was from Dale.
She'll fold when the hotel drops her.
The third was worse.
Victor had written:
If the cart disappears, she'll get desperate.
Lena stopped breathing for a second.
Claire took the page.
"When was this sent?"
Rachel pointed to the date.
Two days before the fire.
Lena felt the diner disappear around her.
She saw orange flames.
Her mother's blue letters curling black.
Dale standing in his jacket before sunrise.
"Did Victor know Dale planned to burn it?"
Rachel shook her head.
"I don't know."
"But he wrote this."
"Yes."
"What did 'disappears' mean?"

"I don't know."
Lena's voice sharpened.
"You worked for him."
"I handled finance, not crimes."
Rachel's own voice rose.
A waitress looked toward them.
Claire lowered her hand.
"Both of you."
Silence returned.
Rachel swallowed.
"I'm sorry."
Lena stared at the printed email.
"No. I am."
She forced herself to look at Rachel.
"What happened after the fire?"
"Victor told accounting to prepare a seventy-five-thousand-dollar settlement reserve."
"Before he offered me seventy-five thousand?"
"Almost two weeks before."
Claire's pen stopped.
"So the settlement amount was planned in advance."
"Yes."
Rachel continued.
"He expected Dale to pressure you into signing. The lawsuit was supposed to make it look legitimate."
Lena looked at the flash drive.
"What else is on there?"
Rachel's hand closed around it.
"Enough."
"Enough for what?"
"To hurt Victor."
"Then give it to us."
Rachel shook her head.
"No."
Lena stared at her.
"You called us."
"I know."
"You said the forged contract wasn't the worst thing they did."
"I wanted you to know."
"Knowing doesn't help if we can't prove it."
Rachel stood abruptly.
"I shouldn't have come."
Claire remained seated.
"Rachel."
"I can't testify."
"Why?"
"I just can't."
Lena stood too.
"My mother's cart was burned."
Rachel's eyes filled.
"I know."
"They stole my identity."
"I know."
"They're trying to take my company."
"I know!"
The diner went quiet.
Rachel lowered her voice.
"You think Victor doesn't keep insurance?"
Claire's expression sharpened.
"What insurance?"
Rachel sat down again.
Her hands trembled.
"Three years ago, we had a quarter-end problem."
"What kind?"
"Revenue recognition."
Claire said nothing.
Rachel looked at Lena.
"Victor wanted numbers moved between periods. I refused at first."
"At first?"
Rachel's eyes dropped.
"My mother was in cancer treatment. I was paying expenses her insurance wouldn't cover."
Lena's anger faded.
Rachel continued.
"Victor offered me a bonus."
"How much?"
"Twenty-five thousand."
Claire leaned back.
"And you changed the books."
"One entry."
Rachel's voice broke.
"One entry, three years ago. I reversed it the next quarter. The company didn't keep the inflated revenue permanently, but I signed the adjustment."
"And Victor kept proof."
"Of course he did."
Rachel laughed bitterly.
"That's how he works. He gets you to cross one line. Then he owns every line after it."
Lena knew that system.
Different man.
Different weapon.
Same cage.
"If I testify," Rachel whispered, "Victor gives that file to investigators."
Claire closed her notebook.
"Maybe."
Rachel stared at her.
"Maybe?"
"Maybe he does. Maybe he doesn't. But right now you're assuming Victor gets to decide what happens to you."
"He has evidence."
"Then we deal with the evidence."
Rachel laughed.
"You make it sound simple."
"It isn't."
Claire's voice was firm.
"But hiding becomes much more dangerous if prosecutors discover it before you disclose it."
Rachel looked frightened.
Claire continued.
"You need your own attorney. Not me. I represent Lena."
"I can't afford one."
"We'll find someone appropriate."

Rachel looked at Lena.
"Why would you help me?"
Lena thought of Marcus offering a hotel room.
Of herself refusing because she needed the choice to remain hers.
Then she thought of Dale.
How many times had he made fear sound like obligation?
"I'm not asking you to destroy your life for mine."
"But you need those emails."
"Yes."
"You could pressure me."
"Victor already did."
Rachel went still.
Lena pushed the sample pages back across the table.
"I won't become him to beat him."
Rachel stared at her for a long time.
Then she picked up the flash drive and left.
For two days, they heard nothing.
Claire found Rachel independent counsel.
Rachel attended a voluntary meeting.
She disclosed the old accounting entry before Victor could use it as a threat.
Then, late Wednesday evening, Claire's office received a courier package.
Inside was a hard drive.
Not the flash drive.
A complete backup.
Rachel had kept copies of her corporate mailbox, accounting approvals, invoice records, internal messages, and archived attachments from the months before she was fired.
There was a note on top.
I'm done letting him own my mistake.
Lena and Claire searched until after midnight.
At 12:43, Claire found the first direct discussion of the forged assignment.
At 1:18, they found Victor approving the legal strategy.
At 1:51, they found invoices showing Shaw Culinary had already ordered packaging using the LENA'S TABLE name before Dale publicly claimed ownership.
Then, at 2:07, Lena found the message.
It was short.
From Dale to Victor.
Sent the night before the cart burned.
Fire should motivate her.
Lena stared at the screen.
Her fingers went numb.
Claire read it over her shoulder.
Neither woman spoke.
There was no metaphor now.
No vague reference to something disappearing.
Fire.
Dale had written fire.
And Victor had received it.
Claire immediately called Detective Cole.
He answered on the fourth ring.
"This better be important."
"It is."
Claire summarized what they had.
Cole stopped sounding tired.
"Do not forward anything to anyone else."
"We won't."
"I need the original backup preserved exactly as received."
"It is."
"Rachel willing to authenticate it?"
Claire looked at Lena.
"She is now."
Cole was silent for several seconds.
"This changes things."
"How much?"
"Potential conspiracy. Arson evidence. Fraud. Depending on the full communications, more."
Lena leaned toward the phone.
"Can you arrest Dale?"
"We're moving."
"That's not an answer."
"It's the only one I can give tonight."
Claire asked, "Search warrants?"
"Being prepared."
"When?"
"I can't promise."
The call ended.
At 7:20 the next morning, Claire's phone rang again.
Cole.
She listened for less than a minute.
Then looked at Lena.
"They've applied for the warrants."
Lena exhaled.
Marcus stood near the office door.
For once, even he looked unsettled.
"Victor's tasting is tomorrow morning."
"I know."
"If the police are moving, you don't need to walk into that room."
Lena looked at him.
"You're suggesting we cancel it?"
"I'm suggesting you don't have to prove courage by standing ten feet from two men who may have conspired to burn your property."
Lena looked down at the blue book.
Her mother's handwriting showed through the worn edges.
For months, Dale had controlled the story because he controlled where it was told.
