"She Tried to Kill Me—So I Destroyed Her Empire" Chapter 2
I raised my eyes.
"Your vehicle?"
She gave me a look filled with pity.
As if I were slow.
As if she had already won.
"Did you honestly think your accident was random?"
The rain beat harder against the glass.
I could hear my own heartbeat.
"You arranged it?"
"I told my driver where you would be."
My thumb pressed the hidden control.
"Outside Adrian's building?"
"Yes."
"And he was supposed to hit me?"
"He was supposed to make sure you understood the message."
My voice came out quieter.
"What message?"
"That you leave when a Whitmore tells you to leave."
I stared at her.
She smiled.
"The idiot panicked."
My breath caught.
Vanessa mistook it for terror.
"He should have finished the job the first time."
The red symbol appeared beneath the cracked reflection of the hospital lights on my watch.
One pulse.
Then another.
Connected.
Live.
Vanessa never noticed.
Why would she?
To Vanessa Whitmore, I was still Elena Hayes from South Harbor.
The woman with the secondhand coats.
The modest apartment.
The government paycheck.
The woman Adrian had supposedly rescued from a world beneath his own.
She had never bothered to ask what kind of government employee I was.
For eight years, I had worked as a forensic accountant with the Massachusetts Attorney General's Financial Crimes Division.
I had followed bribery payments through offshore trusts.
I had dismantled shell companies designed by men who charged a thousand dollars an hour to hide money.
I had testified in cases that sent executives to federal prison.
And for the past eleven months, Whitmore Holdings had been my assignment.
Adrian had discovered the truth two weeks earlier.
Instead of exposing me, he had made a choice.
He had started helping.
Somewhere below us, Detective Marcus Ruiz and Assistant District Attorney Rachel Bennett were waiting for the signal that Vanessa had finally said enough.
She already had.
But I was not finished.
Because arranging the SUV was only one piece.
Someone had paid for it.
Someone had helped cover it up.
And somewhere behind Vanessa's arrogance was the answer to a question worth thirty-eight million dollars.
I looked down at the blood on the NDA.
Then back at her.
"What about Camille?"
Vanessa paused.
Just long enough.
I knew I had found the door.
"What does Camille have to do with any of this?" I asked.
Vanessa smiled slowly.
Then she pulled a chair closer to mine.
"Oh, Elena."
She sat down.
"You really have no idea who paid for that car, do you?"
Parte 2
Say It Again
Vanessa's smile widened as though she had been waiting for me to ask the question.
"You really have no idea who paid for that car, do you?"
I lowered my eyes.
The movement was deliberate.
Fear made people careless, especially people who had spent their entire lives believing everyone beneath them was weak.

Vanessa wanted me frightened.
So I gave her frightened.
My fingers curled around the edge of the bloodstained NDA.
"Camille knows?"
For half a second, Vanessa said nothing.
Then she laughed.
"Knows?"
She leaned back in the chair and crossed one leg over the other.
"Camille paid for it."
The words landed harder than the SUV had.
I felt my pulse jump, but I kept my face still.
Camille Ashford.
Old-money perfection wrapped in silk and pearls.
The woman whose name opened private clubs, boardrooms, and political fundraisers all over Graybridge.
The woman Adrian was supposedly getting engaged to tonight.
I looked down at my injured leg.
"She paid someone to hit me?"
"Don't make it sound so dramatic."
"I have a fractured leg."
"You survived."
That answer told me more than she realized.
There was no remorse in Vanessa's voice.
Only inconvenience.
I let my breathing become uneven.
Vanessa noticed.
Good.
"Why would Camille care about me?"
"Because you wouldn't leave."
"I didn't even know she and Adrian were back together."
"They weren't."
The answer came too quickly.
Vanessa stopped.
I looked up.
"Weren't?"
Her jaw tightened.
I had found another loose thread.
I pulled gently.
"So the engagement isn't real."
"It's real enough."
"That isn't an answer."
Vanessa stood.
Her heels clicked against the hospital floor as she crossed toward the window.
"You ask too many questions."
"Maybe because you came into my hospital room with an NDA after admitting you arranged the car that put me here."
She turned sharply.
"Be careful."
"Why?"
I raised the bloodstained agreement.
"You already confessed."
Her eyes flicked to my smartwatch.
For one terrifying second, I thought she had noticed the faint red indicator.
Then she looked back at my face.
"Nobody is going to believe you."
I forced myself not to smile.
Downstairs, Detective Marcus Ruiz and Assistant District Attorney Rachel Bennett were listening to every word.
The livestream did more than record audio.
It uploaded continuously to a secure state server.
Even if Vanessa found the watch and smashed it, she could not erase what had already been transmitted.
But the attempted murder was only part of the case.
We needed motive.
Money.
Names.
We needed the entire chain.
I needed Vanessa to keep talking.
I let my shoulders sink.
"You're right."
The change in her expression was immediate.
Satisfaction.
"What did you say?"
"I said you're right."
I looked away.
"Nobody is going to believe someone like me over someone like you."
Vanessa walked back toward me.
"Now you're learning."
I swallowed hard enough for her to see it.
"So what happens if I sign?"
"You go home."
"And Adrian?"
"You forget him."
"Camille marries him?"
"Eventually."
I looked at her.
"Does he know?"
Vanessa's smile thinned.
"Know what?"
"That Camille paid for the SUV."
Silence.
There it was again.
I pressed.
"Does Adrian know you tried to have me killed?"

"I didn't try to kill you."
"You just said the driver should have finished the job."
Her eyes hardened.
"You are twisting my words."
"I don't have to."
I held up the NDA.
"My blood is literally on your paperwork."
Vanessa reached for it.
I pulled it against my chest.
Pain tore through my ribs.
I gasped.
She stopped.
Then smiled.
"You see?"
Her voice softened.
"This is why you should sign."
I stared at her.
"Why?"
"Because pain changes people."
She crouched in front of me.
"You've spent your life believing hard work protects you. You followed the rules. You got your little degree. Your little government job. Your little apartment in South Harbor."
Her eyes moved over my hospital gown.
"And look where that got you."
I said nothing.
She mistook silence for humiliation.
"People like my family don't follow rules, Elena. We write them."
That sentence would sound beautiful in court.
I lowered my voice.
"And Camille?"
"What about her?"
"Does she write the rules too?"
Vanessa laughed.
"The Ashfords don't need rules."
She stood again.
"They own the people who enforce them."
That was arrogance talking.
Not evidence.
I needed more.
"Then why are you worried about me?"
"I'm not."
"You came here yourself."
"Because Adrian is sentimental."
My stomach tightened.
"What does that mean?"
"It means he doesn't know when to cut something loose."
"Something?"
"You."
She smiled.
"You're the thing he should have cut loose months ago."
I looked toward the rain.
"What does Adrian have to do with the money?"
Vanessa froze.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
"What money?"
"Whatever money you and Camille are protecting."
She laughed, but this time it sounded forced.
"You really are delusional."
"Then explain the engagement."
"I already did."
"No."
I shook my head.
"You told me Camille understands his world. That's not why someone pays to have another woman run down."
Vanessa's face changed.
The contempt remained.
But now there was calculation behind it.
I had pushed too far.
I needed to give her control back.
I whispered, "I'm scared."
She watched me.
I let my voice shake.
"I don't want Adrian ruined because of me."
That did it.
Vanessa relaxed.
"You finally understand."
"What happens to him?"
"Nothing, if you cooperate."
"And if I don't?"
Vanessa took out her phone.
"Why don't you ask Camille?"
Every muscle in my body went rigid.
She unlocked the screen.
I kept my face down.
One wrong reaction could end everything.
Vanessa tapped a contact and put the call on speaker.
It rang twice.
Then a woman's voice answered.
"Tell me it's done."
Camille.
Cold.
Controlled.
Not even a greeting.
Vanessa looked at me and smiled.
"She's refusing to sign."
Silence came through the speaker.
Then Camille sighed.
"Of course she is."
My hands tightened under the folder.
Vanessa said, "She thinks the police will protect her."
Camille laughed.
It was quiet.
Almost bored.
"Then remind her what happens if she talks."
Vanessa looked at me.
"She already knows."
"No."
Camille's voice sharpened.
"Tell her about Adrian."
My heart kicked against my ribs.
Vanessa's eyes glittered.
I asked, "What about Adrian?"
Camille answered before Vanessa could.
"If you go to the police, Adrian Whitmore goes down with us."
