"She Tried to Kill Me—So I Destroyed Her Empire" Chapter 3
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
Apparently Camille had decided subtlety was no longer necessary.
I kept my voice low.
"For what?"
"Embezzlement."
The word hung in the hospital room.
Camille continued.
"We have transfer records, authorization logs, internal approvals. His name is on everything."
I stared at Vanessa.
"You framed him."
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
"Don't be dramatic."
Camille laughed again.
"We forged enough transfers to make it look as though Adrian moved the money himself."
There it was.
Clear.
Direct.
Recorded.
My smartwatch continued streaming.
I fought the urge to breathe faster.
"How much money?"
Vanessa snapped, "That's none of your business."
Camille was less careful.
"Enough to destroy him."
I leaned back in the wheelchair.
My ribs screamed.
For months, I had followed stolen pension money through one corporation after another.
Fourteen shell companies.
Three domestic banks.
Two offshore trusts.
At least thirty-eight million dollars.
The transactions were carefully layered to look like legitimate consulting fees, real-estate acquisitions, and intercompany loans.
But money always left footprints.
And I had followed every one.
The first shell corporation had appeared eleven months ago.
The second led to Nathan Price, Whitmore Holdings' chief financial officer.
The third led to a private investment vehicle connected to Ashford Capital.
By the seventh company, I knew the theft was organized.
By the twelfth, I knew someone inside Whitmore Holdings was authorizing it.
By the fourteenth, I knew Adrian's digital signature had been attached to transfers he could not possibly have approved.
He had been in London on one date.
Boston on another.
Sitting across from me in a South Harbor diner during a third.
That was how I had realized someone was building a case against him.
And three nights ago, I had found the final ledger.
The real ledger.
Not the sanitized version shown to auditors.
A handwritten account of payments, transfers, and internal codes someone had been arrogant enough to keep off the company network.
I had photographed six pages before I heard footsteps.
An hour later, the SUV came for me.
Vanessa paced beside the hospital bed.
"Do you understand now?"
I looked at the phone.
"So the engagement is part of this."
Camille went silent.
Vanessa frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
"Adrian doesn't love Camille."
Vanessa stepped toward me.
"Watch yourself."
"He isn't getting engaged because he wants her."
"Stop talking."
"The merger."
Vanessa's face drained slightly.
I knew I was right.
Camille spoke calmly through the phone.
"You're smarter than you look."
Vanessa snapped, "Camille."
"What?"
"Stop."
But Camille had the same disease Vanessa did.
Arrogance.
She wanted me to know how completely I had been beaten.
"The engagement gives both families a reason to combine assets," Camille said.
"Once the merger closes, Adrian's signatures become very convenient."
My stomach twisted.
They were not merely stealing from Whitmore Holdings.
They were preparing Adrian to take the fall.
He would become the public face of the fraud.
Camille would become his loyal fiancée.
Vanessa would become the devastated sister.
Everyone else would walk away.
I whispered, "Does Adrian know any of this?"
Camille's voice cooled.
"He knows what we need him to know."
That answer told me enough.
Adrian's silence since the crash no longer looked like betrayal.
It looked like strategy.
Maybe he was already working with Ruiz.
Maybe Bennett had told him not to contact me.
Maybe he had gone back to Camille because we needed her talking.
I couldn't know.
Not yet.
Vanessa ended the call.
"What did you do that for?" Camille demanded.
"I have this under control."
"You clearly don't."
The line went dead.
Vanessa stared at the phone.
For the first time that night, she looked rattled.
I used the moment.
"I'll sign."
Her head snapped up.
"What?"
"I'll sign."
Relief flashed across her face.
She picked the silver pen up from the floor.
"Good."
She walked toward me.
I held out my hand.
Then stopped.
Vanessa's smile vanished.
"What now?"
I looked at the blood drying along my wrist.
"I need one thing."
"You are in no position to negotiate."
"I need to know I'll be safe."
"You'll be safe if you're smart."
"What guarantees do I have that your driver won't come back?"
Vanessa leaned over me.
Her face was inches from mine.
"None."
My pulse thundered.
"Then why should I trust you?"
She smiled.
"Because next time the SUV won't stop after hitting you."
I stared at her.
Vanessa whispered the final words.
"Next time, he'll reverse."
A violent crash shook the door.
Vanessa jumped.
Another blow hit the lock.
Then a man's voice thundered from the hallway.
"Police! Open the door!"
The color vanished from Vanessa Whitmore's face.
Parte 3
The Red Light on My Wrist
The first blow against the hospital door rattled the frame.
Vanessa spun toward it.
"Police! Open the door!"
Her face emptied.
Not paled.
Emptied.
All the arrogance vanished at once, leaving behind something raw and frightened.
She looked at the locked door.
Then at me.
Then at my wrist.
The red light on my smartwatch pulsed once.
Vanessa froze.
For the first time that night, she understood.
"What is that?"
I said nothing.
Her eyes narrowed.
The light pulsed again.
Vanessa moved so fast I barely had time to react.
She lunged across the wheelchair and grabbed my arm.
Pain tore through my bruised ribs.
I gasped.
Her fingers locked around my wrist.
"What did you do?"
Another violent strike hit the door.
"Graybridge Police! Open the door now!"
Vanessa ignored them.
She stared at the watch.
The tiny red symbol reflected in her eyes.
Live.
Her expression changed from confusion to horror.
Then horror became rage.
"You recorded me."
I looked directly at her.
"I listened to you."
"You recorded me!"
She ripped the watch from my wrist.
The band cut across the bruised skin beneath it.

I cried out before I could stop myself.
Vanessa raised the watch above her head.
Then slammed it against the metal arm of the wheelchair.
Once.
Twice.
The glass shattered.
The screen fractured into a spiderweb of white lines.
She hit it again.
The red icon disappeared.
Vanessa stared at the broken watch in her hand.
Her breathing came hard.
Then she smiled.
It was shaky.
But it was still a smile.
"Who's helpless now?"
I looked at the destroyed screen.
Then back at her.
I almost felt sorry for her.
Almost.
She thought the watch was the recording device.
It was not.
The watch was only the trigger.
Beneath the hospital blanket, my phone was still connected to the secure evidence application provided by Rachel Bennett's office.
The microphone was active.
The file was uploading in real time.
Every word Vanessa had spoken had already been transmitted.
Every threat.
Every admission.
Every detail about the SUV.
Every word Camille had said.
Vanessa could smash every device in the room now.
It would not matter.
The evidence was no longer here.
It was already sitting on a state server several floors and several legal worlds away from her reach.
Another impact shook the door.
The lock bent.
Vanessa looked around wildly.
She grabbed the bloodstained NDA from my lap.
"What are you doing?"
"Shut up."
She folded the document in half.
Then again.
She looked toward the trash can.
Too obvious.
The sink.
Too slow.
Her eyes moved to the window.
It was sealed.
Hospital safety glass.
She swore under her breath.
I watched her panic.
Three minutes ago, she had been explaining how people like her wrote the rules.
Now she could not find a place to hide a piece of paper.
"Vanessa."
She turned.
"What?"
"You should probably stop touching the evidence."
She stared at the NDA in her hand.
Blood had smeared across her fingers.
My blood.
She dropped it as if it had burned her.
"You set me up."
"Did I?"
"You kept asking questions."
"People ask questions when someone admits to trying to kill them."
"You knew the police were listening."
I gave her the same calm look she had used on me earlier.
"Maybe."
Her eyes filled with something ugly.
"You bitch."
She stepped toward me.
The door exploded inward.
The lock tore away from the frame.
Two uniformed officers entered first.
Detective Marcus Ruiz came in directly behind them.
"Hands where I can see them!"
Vanessa stopped.
Ruiz had his weapon drawn.
The officers moved quickly.
One crossed toward Vanessa.
The other came to my side.
"Ms. Hayes, are you hurt?"
"My IV was pulled out."
He looked at the blood on my arm.
Then at Vanessa.
Ruiz pointed toward the wall.
"Turn around."
Vanessa did not move.
"You have no idea who you're talking to."
Ruiz's expression did not change.
"Turn around."
"My family owns half the block your precinct sits on."
"Congratulations."
"You think you can walk in here and threaten me?"
Ruiz lowered his voice.
"I'm not threatening you, Ms. Whitmore."
He nodded at the officer beside her.
"I'm arresting you."
Vanessa recoiled.
"For what?"
Ruiz glanced toward me.

Claire stepped forward. “And you accepted a man who came to you already used.” Madison’s smile vanished. “At least he chose me.” “Did he choose you, or did he just run toward whatever was easier?” Ethan suddenly moved between them, but Claire’s final words landed first. “A cheater doesn’t choose anyone.
