"She Tried to Kill Me—So I Destroyed Her Empire" Chapter 5
"I want an attorney."
"That's probably the smartest thing you've said tonight."
He nodded to the uniformed officer.
"Take her."
Vanessa resisted as the officer turned her toward the broken doorway.
She looked back at Adrian.
"You think she's worth destroying this family?"
Adrian's face tightened.
"No."
Vanessa almost smiled.
Then he finished.
"You did that yourself."
The officer led her into the hallway.
Her heels clicked against the tile until the sound disappeared.
For the first time since she had entered my room, I could breathe without feeling her presence pressing against me.
Then I looked at Adrian.
"Thirty-eight million dollars."
His eyes returned to mine.
"What?"
"That's how much is missing."
Rachel quietly closed the damaged hospital door as far as the broken frame allowed.
Ruiz remained near the hallway.
Adrian stared at me.
"Thirty-eight million from where?"
"The Whitmore Employee Retirement Trust."
His face changed.
"No."
"Yes."
"That fund is independently administered."
"On paper."
"Elena, my grandfather created that pension plan."
"I know."
"He built it for construction workers. Maintenance crews. Employees who'd been with the company for decades."
"I know."
His voice rose.
"Then you're telling me someone stole thirty-eight million dollars from people who spent their lives working for us?"
I held his gaze.
"That's exactly what I'm telling you."
He turned away.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
I could see his shoulders moving with each breath.
This was the part financial crimes never showed in spreadsheets.
Numbers were clean.
Victims were not.
Thirty-eight million dollars sounded abstract until you understood what it represented.
A mechanic's retirement.
A widow's mortgage.
A custodian's medication.
A receptionist who had worked thirty years believing the deductions from every paycheck would still exist when she needed them.
Adrian turned back.
"How long have you known?"
"That money was disappearing? Eight months."
"And you didn't tell me."
"I couldn't."
"You were sleeping beside me."
"I was investigating your company."
The words hurt both of us.
He looked at the floor.
"So what was I?"
I hated the question.
"At first?"
"Yes."
"Access."
He closed his eyes.
I forced myself to continue.
"Your relationship with Vanessa gave me proximity to the executive structure. Your events gave me names. Your conversations gave me timelines."
He opened his eyes.
"And later?"
"Later you became Adrian."
Something softened in his face.
Only slightly.
I looked away first.
"That's why I started trying to remove myself from the case."
Rachel spoke from behind him.
"She requested reassignment six weeks ago."
Adrian looked at her.
"Why wasn't she reassigned?"
"Because by then the investigation had escalated."
I continued before Rachel could.
"We found fourteen shell companies."
Adrian stared at me.
"Fourteen?"
"Delaware, Nevada, Wyoming, Massachusetts. Different directors, different addresses, different registered agents."
"Connected how?"
"Money."
I shifted carefully in the wheelchair.
Pain moved through my ribs.
"Funds left the retirement trust as management fees, consulting contracts, property deposits, and short-term corporate loans."
"Then?"
"They moved again."
"Where?"
"Sometimes three companies deep. Sometimes six."
I watched his expression.
"But eventually, almost every trail ended in an investment structure controlled by Ashford Capital."
Adrian went pale.
"Camille."
"Camille is involved."
"How involved?"
"Enough that she wanted me dead."
Silence settled over the room.
Rain continued striking the windows.
Adrian walked to the glass and stared down at Graybridge.
"I thought Vanessa hated you because she was a snob."
I almost laughed, but there was nothing funny about it.
"She is a snob."
"I thought she was controlling. Cruel sometimes. Obsessed with the family name."
He turned.
"I didn't know she was capable of this."
"People rarely begin with attempted murder."
His face tightened.
"What does that mean?"
I looked at Rachel.
She nodded.
So I told him.
"The earliest suspicious transfers happened five years ago."
Adrian frowned.
"Five?"
"Yes."
"Vanessa wasn't on the board five years ago."
"I know."
She had joined the Whitmore Holdings board three years earlier.
The first stolen pension payment predated her position by almost two years.
Adrian understood immediately.
His eyes went cold.
"Someone else was involved."
"At least one person."
"Inside my family?"
"Or senior enough inside Whitmore Holdings to use family-level authorization."
He shook his head.
"My father?"
"I don't know."
"My mother?"
"No evidence."
"Nathan Price?"
"He's one of the executives we're investigating."
Adrian paced away from me.
"What about the second executive?"
I hesitated.
"We haven't identified that person yet."
"You're telling me someone in my company stole retirement money for five years, used my signatures, worked with Camille, and helped my sister cover up an attempted murder."
"I'm telling you that's what the evidence is beginning to show."
He looked sick.
Ruiz's phone rang.
He answered.
"Ruiz."
A pause.
His posture changed.
"Where?"
Rachel immediately looked toward him.
Ruiz listened.
Then said, "Bring him in."
He ended the call.
"They found the driver."
My heartbeat accelerated.
Adrian turned.
"The SUV driver?"
Ruiz nodded.
"Derek Cole. Thirty-nine. Former private security contractor. Currently works freelance executive transportation."
"Where was he?"
"Bus terminal."
Ruiz's mouth hardened.
"One-way ticket to Montreal."
Rachel checked the time.
"How soon can we talk to him?"
"If he asks for counsel, we can't."
"And if he doesn't?"
Ruiz looked at me.
"Then tonight gets longer."
Three hours later, I was still awake.
The doctors had moved me to another private room after nurses replaced my IV and examined the damage Vanessa had caused.
Adrian refused to leave.
Rachel had gone downstairs to coordinate warrants.
Ruiz came back shortly after two in the morning.
He carried a laptop.
His expression told me something had changed.
"He talked."
I straightened.
"Derek?"
"His attorney arrived forty minutes ago."
Adrian frowned.
"I thought you said he might not talk once counsel showed up."
"He changed his mind when we told him Vanessa was in custody and played part of her hospital confession."

Ruiz placed the laptop on the rolling table.
"Attempted murder carries a very different future than reckless driving."
He opened a video file.
Black-and-white dashcam footage filled the screen.
The timestamp showed the night of my attack.
My stomach tightened.
There was Adrian's building.
There was the sidewalk.
Then there was me.
I watched myself step toward the curb.
The SUV accelerated.
Adrian grabbed the edge of the table.
"Turn it off."
I couldn't.
"Wait."
The footage continued.
The vehicle struck me.
My body disappeared from view.
Adrian swore and turned away.
Ruiz paused the recording.
"Derek says Vanessa gave him your schedule."
My throat felt dry.
"How?"
"Text messages and voice notes."
He opened another file.
Vanessa's voice filled the room.
"She leaves Adrian's building around ten. Make Elena disappear."
Adrian shut his eyes.
Another recording played.
"If she sees the car, don't stop. She needs to understand that I'm done asking."
Then another.
"Once it's finished, you'll get the rest."
Ruiz stopped the audio.
I stared at the screen.
"Payment?"
"He received twenty-five thousand before the attack. Another twenty-five was promised afterward."
"From Vanessa?"
Ruiz did not answer.
That made me look at him.
"Marcus."
"We traced the first payment."
Adrian turned back.
"To Camille?"
"No."
"Vanessa?"
Ruiz's expression was unreadable.
"No."
He opened a bank authorization record.
A routing number appeared.
Then a private account.
Whitmore Holdings Executive Reserve.
Adrian stepped closer.
"That account requires family authorization."
"I know."
"Vanessa doesn't have independent access."
"Apparently she didn't use her own credentials."
Ruiz scrolled down.
My eyes found the authorization field.
I read the name once.
Then again.
Adrian stopped breathing.
AUTHORIZED BY:
RICHARD WHITMORE.
His father.
Parte 5
Welcome to the Whitmore Family
Richard Whitmore did not come to the hospital.
He sent three lawyers.
By sunrise, one was demanding access to Vanessa, another was challenging the warrant on her phone, and the third had delivered a letter stating that Richard had never authorized any payment to Derek Cole.
Adrian read the letter twice.
Then he crushed it in his fist.
"My father doesn't write letters when he's innocent."
I watched him from the hospital bed.
"What does he do?"
"He shows up."
That afternoon, Richard finally did.
Not at St. Catherine's.
At Whitmore Estate.
Rachel Bennett had obtained a warrant allowing investigators to inspect Richard's private financial records and the devices used to authorize payments from the Whitmore Holdings Executive Reserve.
The doctors wanted me to stay another night.
I refused.
Three hours later, Adrian pushed my wheelchair through the front doors of the house his family had spent generations convincing Graybridge was a palace.
Whitmore Estate stood on Beacon Hill behind black iron gates and old stone walls.
I had seen it before.
But never like this.
The first time Adrian brought me there, Vanessa had looked at my department-store dress and asked whether I had misunderstood the invitation.
Now two state investigators followed behind me carrying evidence cases.
Funny how quickly a room changed when you entered it with a warrant.
Margaret Whitmore was waiting in the library.
She stood beside the fireplace in a charcoal dress, perfectly composed despite the fact that her daughter had been arrested for conspiring to kill me.

Claire stepped forward. “And you accepted a man who came to you already used.” Madison’s smile vanished. “At least he chose me.” “Did he choose you, or did he just run toward whatever was easier?” Ethan suddenly moved between them, but Claire’s final words landed first. “A cheater doesn’t choose anyone.
