"She Tried to Kill Me—So I Destroyed Her Empire" Chapter 6
Richard sat at the long mahogany table.
He looked older than he had three weeks earlier.
Silver hair.
Dark suit.
No tie.
A glass of untouched bourbon sat in front of him.
His eyes went first to Adrian.
Then to me.
Margaret's went directly to my wheelchair.
"What is she doing here?"
Adrian stopped pushing.
"Her name is Elena."
"I know her name."
"Then use it."
Margaret's expression sharpened.
"This is a family matter."
Rachel stepped around us.
"No, Mrs. Whitmore. It's a criminal investigation."
Margaret barely looked at her.
"My daughter is in custody because that woman manipulated a private conversation."
I laughed before I could stop myself.
Everyone turned toward me.
"Vanessa ripped an IV out of my arm and confessed to arranging the SUV that broke my leg."
Margaret's mouth tightened.
"Vanessa was under enormous emotional strain."
"She threatened to have the driver reverse over me next time."
"People say terrible things when they're upset."
"People also go to prison for them."
"Enough."
Richard's voice cut across the room.
Margaret turned.
He still had not looked away from me.
"Elena."
"Richard."
"I did not authorize that payment."
I rolled closer to the table.
"Your digital certificate did."
"I understand that."
"Your executive account funded Derek Cole."
"I understand that too."
"Then you understand why we're here."
His jaw flexed.
"I have never met Derek Cole."
"That doesn't mean you didn't pay him."
"I didn't."
"Then someone wanted it to look like you did."
For the first time, Richard's expression changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
Adrian saw it.
"What?"
Richard looked at his son.
"Nothing."
"Don't do that."
"Do what?"
"Decide what the rest of us are allowed to know."
Margaret stepped between them.
"Adrian, your father is trying to protect this family."
Adrian laughed bitterly.
"That sentence is starting to sound like a confession."
"Watch your tone."
"No."
The word cracked through the library.
Margaret stared at him.
Adrian moved beside my wheelchair.
"I spent my entire life watching this family bury problems."
"Your sister made mistakes."
"My sister tried to murder Elena."
Margaret flinched.
Adrian did not stop.
"And if Elena's investigation is right, someone stole thirty-eight million dollars from our employees' retirement accounts."
Richard looked at me sharply.
"Thirty-eight?"
I studied him.
That reaction seemed real.
"You didn't know the amount?"
"I didn't know there was an amount."
Margaret stared at him.
"Richard?"
He ignored her.
"Show me."
Rachel opened an evidence folder.
"We're not here to brief you on the entire investigation."
Richard leaned forward.
"If someone has stolen from my employees, I want to know."
"Then give us access to your devices."
His eyes moved to Rachel.
"All of them?"
"Phone. Laptop. Authentication token. Private office terminal."
Margaret stepped forward.
"Absolutely not."
Richard lifted one hand.
She stopped.
Then he reached into his jacket.
Adrian tensed.
Richard placed his phone on the table.
"Take it."

Margaret stared at him.
"Richard."
He removed a small security token from his key ring.
Then he looked at Rachel.
"My office is upstairs."
For the next four hours, Whitmore Estate stopped feeling like a family home.
It became a crime scene.
State technicians imaged Richard's devices while I worked from the library with one of our digital-forensics analysts.
The authorization record bothered me.
Digital signatures were difficult to fake without leaving something behind.
Richard's certificate had been valid.
His token had been recognized.
The payment had passed every internal security check.
But authentication was only part of the story.
I needed location.
At 7:14 that evening, I found it.
"Rachel."
She came around the table.
"What?"
I enlarged the access log.
"The payment was approved at 11:42 p.m. on May seventeenth."
Richard looked up from across the room.
"So?"
I turned the laptop toward him.
"Where were you that night?"
He frowned.
"I don't remember."
Adrian did.
"You were in Washington."
Richard looked at him.
"The infrastructure dinner."
Margaret nodded slowly.
"You stayed at the Hay-Adams."
I checked the travel records Rachel's team had pulled.
Richard's corporate jet landed outside Washington at 4:18 p.m.
His hotel key card was used at 11:37.
The payment to Derek was authorized five minutes later.
In Graybridge.
Adrian leaned over my shoulder.
"Where did the login originate?"
I opened the network data.
Whitmore Holdings headquarters.
Twenty-third floor.
Executive finance wing.
My pulse quickened.
I followed the internal terminal ID.
The result appeared.
WH-FIN-01.
Adrian stopped breathing.
"I know that terminal."
Richard stood.
"Whose?"
I looked at him.
"Nathan Price."
Silence swallowed the room.
Whitmore Holdings' chief financial officer.
The man who had overseen the retirement trust for twelve years.
Richard grabbed his phone before remembering it was evidence.
"Where is he?"
Rachel was already calling Ruiz.
"We'll find out."
They didn't.
Nathan Price's apartment was empty.
His car was gone.
His passport was missing.
At 8:03 p.m., officers reached Whitmore Holdings.
Nathan's office had been stripped.
Not cleaned.
Stripped.
Laptop gone.
Paper files gone.
Two external drives missing.
Even the framed family photographs on his desk had disappeared.
Someone had known investigators were coming.
Worse, the central finance server had been hit with a remote deletion command less than an hour after Vanessa's arrest.
By midnight, our case had changed again.
Nathan Price was no longer merely a person of interest.
He was a fugitive.
I stayed at Whitmore Estate because moving back to the hospital would have wasted hours we did not have.
Richard gave investigators unrestricted access to the house network.
Margaret disappeared upstairs.
Adrian remained beside me.
Neither of us talked about what had happened between us.
There would be time for that if we survived everything else.
At 1:26 a.m., the digital-forensics team recovered fragments from Nathan's deleted company mailbox.
Most were useless.
Broken attachments.
Corrupted calendar entries.
Half-finished messages.

Then I found one email with no visible sender.
The metadata had been scrubbed.
The subject line was blank.
Only one sentence remained in the body.
"If Elena survives, move everything before the merger."
My skin went cold.
Adrian read it over my shoulder.
"That was sent before the SUV hit you."
"Forty-three minutes before."
Rachel leaned closer.
"Can you recover the sender?"
"Not yet."
"What about the attachment?"
I clicked the damaged file.
A spreadsheet opened.
Most of the cells were corrupted.
Numbers appeared between strings of broken code.
Account references.
Dates.
Transfer amounts.
Then one clean line loaded at the bottom.
AUTHORIZED PRINCIPAL.
I stared at the screen.
Adrian leaned closer.
His face changed.
Rachel whispered, "What the hell?"
The name displayed beneath the field was unmistakable.
ADRIAN WHITMORE.
Parte 6
Was I Sleeping Beside the Enemy?
ADRIAN WHITMORE.
The name sat at the bottom of the recovered spreadsheet like a verdict.
Nobody spoke.
I read it again, hoping the letters would rearrange themselves into something less devastating.
They didn't.
Adrian stood beside my wheelchair, staring at the screen.
"That's not possible."
Rachel Bennett looked at him.
"Don't touch the computer."
His hand stopped inches from the table.
"You think I did this?"
"I think your name is attached to evidence in an active criminal investigation."
"My name was attached to the other transfers too. Camille admitted they forged them."
"Camille is a fugitive."
Rachel's voice was flat.
"Anything she said before disappearing has to be independently verified."
Adrian looked at me.
I hated how badly I wanted to defend him.
That was exactly why I couldn't.
For eleven months, I had followed numbers instead of feelings.
Numbers didn't care who kissed me goodnight.
They didn't care who remembered how I took my coffee or held my hand during my mother's birthday dinner.
They didn't care who said "I love you."
They only told me where the money went.
And now they were pointing at Adrian.
I turned back to the laptop.
"Open the other recovered transfers."
Rachel glanced at me.
"Elena."
"Please."
The forensic analyst loaded the files.
One transfer appeared.
Then another.
Then six more.
Different dates.
Different amounts.
The same authorization identity.
ADRIAN WHITMORE.
My stomach tightened.
"How many?"
The analyst counted.
"Nine that we've recovered so far."
"Total?"
"Just over eleven million dollars."
Adrian stepped backward.
"No."
I looked at him.
"Where were you on March fourth?"
"What?"
"March fourth, last year."
"I don't know."
"Think."
His eyes narrowed.
"I was in London."
I remembered.
He had sent me a picture from Heathrow complaining about airport coffee.
I checked the transfer timestamp.
"April nineteenth?"
"Chicago. Whitmore Infrastructure conference."
"June second?"
He hesitated.
"Graybridge."
My chest tightened.
"Where?"
"Headquarters."
Rachel looked up.
Adrian saw it.
"So now I'm guilty because I went to work?"
"No one said that."
"You didn't have to."
Richard had been silent across the library.
Now he stood.
"Adrian, don't answer anything else."
Adrian turned toward his father.
"I'm not taking legal advice from you."
"I'm trying to protect you."
"That's what you always say."
Richard's face hardened.
"Because sometimes you need protecting."
"From what?"
Adrian pointed at the computer.
"From my own signature?"
Margaret appeared in the doorway.
