"She Tried to Kill Me—So I Destroyed Her Empire" Chapter 8
"Isn't it?"
I leaned forward despite the pain in my ribs.
"Vanessa stole millions. You replaced the money, falsified records, involved your CFO, and made the consequences disappear."
"She was twenty-nine."
"She was an adult."
"She was my daughter."
"And the people whose retirement money she gambled with were somebody's parents too."
Richard looked away.
Adrian stood beside me.
I turned toward him.
"She didn't become this woman overnight. Every time your family saved her, you taught her she was untouchable."
He closed his eyes.
I knew the words hurt.
They were supposed to.
Because Richard had not been the only one protecting Vanessa.
Adrian had paid settlements after her drunken fights.
Margaret had pressured newspapers to bury stories.
Family attorneys had silenced employees.
Money had turned every consequence into an inconvenience.
Until Vanessa finally believed even murder could be cleaned up.
Adrian looked at his father.
"How many times?"
Richard hesitated.
"How many times did you cover for her?"
"I don't know."
"Try."
"Adrian."
"Try."
Richard looked exhausted.
"More than I should have."
"That's not a number."
Margaret suddenly spoke.
"All of us did."
Everyone turned.
Tears stood in her eyes.
"I called the dean when she was suspended at Wellesley. I paid the woman she hit with her car when she was twenty-four. I convinced myself Vanessa was impulsive."
Her voice broke.
"I told myself protecting my child was what mothers did."
Adrian looked at her.
"And now Elena can barely walk."
Margaret covered her mouth.
No one answered.
My laptop chimed.
The forensic analyst had sent another recovered file from Adrian's hidden drive.
I opened it.
A series of transactions filled the screen.
The earliest matched Richard's story.
Two point four million disappeared.
Then family money entered.
The hole narrowed.
For almost eighteen months, the suspicious activity stopped.
Then something changed.
New shell companies appeared.
Larger transfers.
More sophisticated layering.
I scrolled faster.
Five million.
Eight.
Fourteen.
Twenty-three.
Thirty-eight.
"This isn't the same scheme."
Rachel came beside me.
"What do you mean?"
"The first theft was crude."
I pointed at the screen.
"Vanessa moved money directly into an investment vehicle. Anyone performing a serious audit could have found it."
"And later?"
"Look."
I opened the later transactions.
"The money is routed through multiple shell companies, consulting contracts, property funds, offshore trusts."
Rachel understood.
"Someone professionalized it."
"Exactly."
Adrian leaned closer.
"Camille."
I opened the ownership records.
Three of the shell companies were tied to former Ashford Capital employees.
Two shared legal counsel with Ashford subsidiaries.
One had been registered from an office suite owned by Graham Ashford.
Richard stared at the screen.
"Vanessa didn't build this."
"No."
I looked at him.
"Camille did."
The shape of the entire conspiracy changed.
Vanessa had started the theft.
Camille had turned it into an empire.
Another recovered document appeared.
MERGER CONSOLIDATION PLAN.
Adrian frowned.
"I've never seen this."
I opened it.
The plan described the proposed combination of Whitmore Holdings and Ashford Capital.
Buried deep in the financial schedules was a provision transferring pension liabilities into a newly created Whitmore subsidiary.
I read it twice.
Then I understood.
"Oh my God."
Rachel leaned over me.
"What?"
"They were moving the losses."
"Where?"
"Into Whitmore."
Adrian stared at me.
"It's already Whitmore money."
"Not after the merger."
I pointed at the structure.
"Camille was going to consolidate the shell-company losses, pension shortfalls, and fraudulent loans into a Whitmore-controlled entity."
Richard's face hardened.
"And Ashford Capital?"
"Walks away clean."
Adrian read further.
His expression slowly changed.
"What is this?"
I followed his finger.
Executive authorization responsibility.
ADRIAN WHITMORE.
My stomach dropped.
The forged signatures suddenly made perfect sense.
Camille had not been preparing only to steal money.
She had been preparing a defendant.
After the merger collapsed, investigators would find Adrian's name on the transfers.
His authorization on the shell companies.
His signature on the consolidation.
Camille would be the horrified fiancée.
Vanessa would claim ignorance.
Ashford Capital would separate itself from the scandal.
Whitmore Holdings would collapse.
And Adrian would go to prison.
He stepped away from the computer.
"They were going to bury everything under me."
"Yes."
"My sister knew?"
I couldn't answer that yet.
Rachel's phone rang.
She glanced at the screen.
"Bennett."
We watched her expression change.
"Where is she?"
A pause.
"You're sure?"
Rachel looked at Ruiz, who had just entered the library.
"Don't touch her. I'm coming down."
She ended the call.
Ruiz frowned.
"What happened?"
Rachel stared at us.
"We found Camille."
Adrian stepped forward.
"Where?"
Rachel's expression was strange.
"She wasn't hiding."
"What does that mean?"
"Ten minutes ago, Camille Ashford walked into the Graybridge District Attorney's Office."
The room fell silent.
"Alone?" I asked.
"No."
Rachel picked up her coat.
"She brought two criminal-defense attorneys and three boxes of financial records."
Richard swore quietly.
Adrian stared at her.
"Why would she turn herself in?"
Rachel's phone buzzed.
She read the message.
Then looked at me.
"Because she wants a deal."
"What kind of deal?"
Rachel turned the screen toward us.
The message contained a transcription of Camille's first statement to prosecutors.
Only two sentences.
"I want immunity."
"I can prove Vanessa Whitmore was the mastermind behind everything."
Parte 8
Two Heiresses, One Lie
"I want immunity."
"I can prove Vanessa Whitmore was the mastermind behind everything."
I read Camille's statement three times.
Then I laughed.
Adrian looked at me.
"What's funny?"
"She thinks we're stupid."
Rachel Bennett was already reaching for her coat.
"Camille thinks we're desperate."
"Are we?"
Rachel looked at me.
"Not desperate enough to give immunity to someone who admitted helping frame a man for thirty-eight million dollars in pension fraud."
Richard stood at the end of the library table.
"She's going to blame Vanessa."
"Of course she is."
Margaret looked sick.

"But Vanessa did start it."
"That's exactly why Camille's story might work."
I turned the laptop toward them.
"Vanessa committed the first theft. Camille knows we can prove that."
Adrian understood.
"So Camille gives you the truth about the beginning."
"And lies about everything that happened afterward."
Rachel nodded.
"Come with me."
Two hours later, I was sitting behind one-way glass at the Graybridge District Attorney's Office.
My injured leg rested on a second chair.
Adrian stood behind me.
Camille Ashford sat on the other side of the glass.
She looked nothing like a fugitive.
Cream silk blouse.
Tailored black trousers.
Pearl earrings.
Her blond hair was pulled into a perfect knot.
Two defense attorneys sat beside her.
Three banker boxes rested on the table.
Camille folded her hands.
"I want transactional immunity."
Rachel sat across from her.
"You aren't getting it."
"Then we're wasting each other's time."
"You're free to leave."
One of Camille's attorneys whispered to her.
She ignored him.
"I can give you Vanessa Whitmore."
Rachel leaned back.
"We already have Vanessa Whitmore."
"Not for the pension theft."
"Try me."
Camille's smile tightened.
She opened the first box.
Emails.
Printed statements.
Copies of transfer instructions.
She slid one page across the table.
"Five years ago, Vanessa stole $2.4 million from the Whitmore Employee Retirement Trust."
"We know."
That surprised her.
Only for a second.
Then she recovered.
"Do you know why?"
"A failed investment."
Camille's eyes narrowed.
"Richard told you."
Rachel said nothing.
Camille continued.
"Vanessa approached me after she lost the money. She needed somewhere to hide the transfer."
"You helped her."
"I advised her."
I almost laughed again.
Adrian muttered behind me.
"She laundered stolen pension money and calls it advice."
Camille continued.
"Vanessa became addicted to risk. Every time she lost money, Richard protected her."
"How much did you personally move?"
"None."
That was lie number one.
I wrote it down.
Rachel asked, "Did you create any of the shell companies?"
"No."
Lie number two.
"Did Ashford Capital receive stolen Whitmore pension funds?"
"Not knowingly."
Lie number three.
Camille pushed several emails forward.
"They were Vanessa's instructions."
Rachel read one aloud.
"Move four through the Harbor account. Father will cover the gap if anyone notices."
Vanessa's name appeared beneath it.
Adrian stared through the glass.
"That's her email."
"It is."
For the next forty minutes, Camille built a beautiful case against Vanessa.
Almost too beautiful.
Every document pointed in one direction.
Every email made Vanessa look reckless.
Every transfer Camille discussed placed her just far enough away to claim ignorance.
She wasn't giving prosecutors the truth.
She was giving them a curated version of it.
Then the interview-room door opened.
Ruiz entered.
He leaned toward Rachel and whispered something.
Rachel looked through the glass at me.
Then she stood.
"We'll take ten minutes."
Camille smiled.
"Take twenty."
Rachel joined us in the observation room.
Ruiz closed the door.
"Vanessa wants to talk."
Adrian stared at him.
"Now?"
"Her attorney contacted us thirty minutes ago."
Rachel almost smiled.
"Camille walks in with evidence, and suddenly Vanessa discovers civic responsibility."
"Pretty much."
I looked through the glass.
"Does Vanessa know Camille is here?"
"Her lawyer knows."
"Then Vanessa knows."
Rachel turned toward me.
"What are you thinking?"
