"Pregnant woman in dilapidated house" Chapter 2
Elena gave him a tired smile.
“Because people reveal more when they think you’re stupid.”
She slid a spreadsheet toward him.
“And your family thought I was very stupid.”
Adrian looked down.
There were dozens of transactions.
Some were small enough to disappear inside Whitmore Global’s enormous operating expenses.
Others were not.
“What am I looking at?”
“Follow the money.”
Elena pointed to the first transfer.
“Three months ago, Damian authorized four-point-two million dollars to a consulting firm called Northstar Strategic Partners.”
“I’ve never heard of it.”
“Neither had the state of Delaware until eleven months ago.”
She moved her finger down the page.
“Northstar transferred most of the money to two other LLCs. Those companies transferred it again.”
“How many layers?”
“Seven.”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“And where did it end?”
Elena turned the page.
“Mostly here.”
A company name had been circled in red.
Blackridge Capital Management.
Adrian’s face changed.
“That’s one of our private lenders.”
“Exactly.”
He read the figures twice.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“So far?”
Elena looked directly at him.
“Twenty-three million dollars.”
The room seemed to shrink around him.
“Twenty-three million?”
“That I can prove.”
Adrian pushed away from the table.
“Damian stole twenty-three million dollars from my company?”
“I didn’t say he stole it.”
“Elena.”
“I said twenty-three million dollars disappeared through transactions he authorized.”
“That’s stealing.”
“In your living room, maybe. In federal court, words matter.”
He stared at her.
Even exhausted, pregnant, and living beneath a leaking roof, Elena sounded like the investigator she had been before he met her.
“What was Blackridge doing with the money?”
“That’s where it gets interesting.”
She removed a property record.
Adrian took it.
For several seconds, he didn’t understand what he was seeing.
Then he saw the address.
Whitmore Estate.
His childhood home.
The mansion his grandfather had built outside Bedford.
“What is this?”
“A mortgage.”
“That property has been debt-free for twenty years.”
“Not anymore.”
Adrian looked up sharply.
Elena tapped the signature line.
“Damian used his temporary authority to secure a private loan against the estate.”
“My mother would never allow that.”
“Your mother signed the acknowledgment.”
Adrian’s face hardened.
The woman who had thrown Elena into a collapsing farmhouse had apparently mortgaged her own mansion while continuing to host charity dinners beneath crystal chandeliers.
“How much?”
“Fifteen million.”
He swore under his breath.
Elena reached for another folder.
“And that’s not the strangest thing I found.”
She placed a medical invoice in front of him.
The name at the top read Vanessa Sinclair.
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“What about her?”
“Your mother has been telling everyone she’s pregnant.”
“So you said.”
“Twenty-two weeks, according to Victoria.”
Elena placed three more documents beside the invoice.
“The clinic listed on Vanessa’s paperwork closed fourteen months ago.”
Adrian stared at her.
“What?”
“The physician whose name appears on her prenatal records retired two years ago.”
He picked up the papers.

“And this ultrasound?”
“Stock image.”
Adrian’s eyes snapped up.
“You’re telling me Vanessa isn’t pregnant?”
“I’m telling you her evidence of pregnancy is fake.”
“That’s insane.”
“So is moving a stranger into another woman’s bedroom and calling her the mother of the family’s future heir.”
Adrian paced toward the boarded window.
“Why? What do they gain from pretending she’s pregnant?”
“I don’t know yet.”
“You’ve had three months.”
“And I’ve been doing this with frozen accounts, no car, no staff, and a baby kicking my ribs every ten minutes.”
That stopped him.
Adrian closed his eyes.
“Elena.”
“I’m not asking for sympathy.”
“I know.”
“No, you don’t.”
Her voice cracked for the first time.
“I spent the first week thinking my husband had abandoned me.”
Adrian turned.
“I woke up every morning wondering what I had done wrong. I wondered whether you believed the baby wasn’t yours. I wondered whether you had met someone in London.”
“I would never—”
“I know that now.”
She swallowed.
“But I didn’t know it then.”
Adrian crossed the room, but Elena stepped back.
Not dramatically.
Just enough.
That small movement hurt more than anything she had told him.
“So I stopped waiting for you,” she said. “I started investigating them.”
Adrian looked at the wall of folders.
“Why didn’t you go to the FBI?”
Elena’s expression hardened again.
“Because I didn’t know how many people they had bought.”
“What does that mean?”
“Your calls didn’t just stop reaching me.”
She opened another section of the folder.
“Damian replaced two people in your New York executive office. Your personal assistant resigned unexpectedly. Your deputy communications director was fired.”
“I didn’t authorize any of that.”
“I know.”
“My London team should have caught it.”
“Your London team thought the instructions were coming from New York.”
Adrian went silent.
Elena pushed several printed emails toward him.
“Someone created an internal wall around you. Messages from New York were redirected. Calls from me were flagged as personal disruptions.”
His face turned pale.
“And messages from you?”
“Filtered.”
Adrian sank into the chair.
For the first time that night, anger gave way to something colder.
Fear.
“This wasn’t about you.”
Elena said nothing.
“They weren’t just trying to get rid of my wife.”
“No.”
“They isolated me too.”
“Yes.”
Adrian looked at the black folder.
“What happens tomorrow?”
Elena checked the old clock on the wall.
It was almost midnight.
“At nine in the morning, Whitmore Global is holding an emergency shareholder meeting at Manhattan headquarters.”
“I never called a shareholder meeting.”
“Damian did.”
“Under what authority?”
“Emergency succession provisions.”
Adrian stood again.
“That requires proof that I’m dead, incapacitated, or legally unable to perform my duties.”
Elena’s silence made his stomach drop.
“What?”
She reached beneath the final divider.
This time, she removed a medical report.
Adrian read the first page.
His hands slowly tightened around it.
The report described prolonged insomnia, paranoia, emotional instability, aggressive episodes, impaired judgment, and an alleged psychological breakdown during negotiations in London.

At the bottom was a physician’s signature.
Above it were the words:
UNFIT TO CONTINUE EXECUTIVE DUTIES.
“This is fabricated.”
“I know.”
“I’ve never met this doctor.”
“I know.”
“They’re going to present this tomorrow?”
“Yes.”
“And then what?”
“Damian will ask the board to recognize you as temporarily incapacitated. Victoria will support an emergency restructuring of the family trust.”
Adrian looked toward the rain-streaked window.
“And Damian becomes chairman.”
“If the vote passes.”
A terrible clarity settled over him.
The forged messages.
The blocked calls.
Elena’s frozen accounts.
Vanessa.
The mortgage.
The missing money.
The fake medical report.
This had never been a family feud.
It was a takeover.
“They weren’t trying to make you disappear,” Adrian whispered.
Elena closed the folder.
“No.”
“They were trying to erase me.”
Elena watched him carefully.
“Does anyone know your flight landed early?”
“My London attorney. The pilot. The driver.”
“Anyone in your family?”
“No.”
“Anyone at Whitmore Global?”
“No.”
“Does Damian know you’re back?”
Adrian shook his head.
“No.”
For the first time all night, Elena smiled.
It wasn’t warm.
It wasn’t relieved.
It was the smile of a woman who had spent three months waiting for one final piece to fall into place.
“Good.”
Adrian looked at her.
Elena closed the black folder with a quiet snap.
“Then tomorrow morning,” she said, “let’s attend your funeral.”
Part 3 | Twenty-Three Million Dollars
At 12:17 a.m., Adrian called the one man outside his marriage he still trusted.
Daniel Brooks answered on the second ring.
“Adrian?”
Daniel’s voice sharpened immediately.
“Where the hell are you?”
“In New York.”
There was a long silence.
“That isn’t possible.”
Adrian looked at Elena across the battered kitchen table.
“Apparently my family was counting on everyone believing that.”
Daniel swore.
“You need to tell me exactly what’s happening.”
“I need you to tell me first. Have you received anything from Damian concerning an emergency shareholder meeting?”
Another silence.
This one was worse.
“Yes.”
Adrian’s grip tightened around the phone.
“When?”
“Forty-eight hours ago.”
“And you didn’t call me?”
“I did.”
“No, you didn’t.”
“Adrian, I called your London office six times.”
Elena slowly looked up.
Daniel continued.
“Your assistant said you were under medical supervision and unavailable to speak with anyone.”
“My assistant?”
“Melissa Grant.”
Adrian’s face went cold.
“Melissa hasn’t worked for me in four months.”
Daniel stopped talking.
Adrian leaned against the table.
“Who told you she was still my assistant?”
“Your New York executive office.”
Elena pulled a legal pad toward herself.
“Ask him about Nathan Cole.”
Adrian nodded.
“What about Nathan Cole?”
“Your other executive assistant?”
“Yes.”
“He resigned.”
“I never accepted his resignation.”
“According to the paperwork, you did.”
Adrian shut his eyes.
“Daniel, I haven’t signed a single personnel document since I left New York.”
“Then we have a serious problem.”
“We have twenty-three million serious problems.”
That got Daniel’s attention.
“What did you say?”
Adrian handed the phone to Elena.
“Tell him.”
Elena switched to speaker.
“Daniel, Damian authorized twenty-three million dollars in transfers through seven layers of shell companies.”
“Elena?”
“Hello, Daniel.”
“I’ve been trying to find you.”
