"Pregnant woman in dilapidated house" Chapter 8
Damian’s hands curled into fists.
Elena continued.
“For six months, you sat in Adrian’s office.”
Her eyes dropped briefly to his expensive suit.
“You signed documents.”
She glanced toward the screen.
“You gave orders.”
Then she looked at him again.
“You moved twenty-three million dollars.”
Damian’s breathing became heavier.
“You even tried to declare my husband mentally incompetent.”
Elena placed her palm on the trust.
“And all that time, the voting rights you needed most were sitting here.”
Damian’s voice dropped.
“You’re bluffing.”
“No.”
“You couldn’t exercise forty-one percent without notice.”
“I filed notice at six-twelve this morning.”
Richard looked up sharply.
Margaret checked her tablet.
A notification appeared.
Her eyes widened.
“She did.”
The boardroom exploded into conversation.
Damian stared at Margaret.
“What?”
“The trustee activation notice was filed with corporate counsel and the board secretary’s office.”
“You’re the board secretary.”
“It was held in the secure legal queue until the meeting opened.”
Margaret looked at Elena.
“It became effective at nine.”
Elena checked the clock.
“Sixteen minutes ago.”
Damian’s face twisted.
“You planned this.”
Elena looked almost surprised.
“Of course I planned it.”
The directors began moving.
People who had avoided Elena’s eyes twenty minutes earlier now asked Margaret for copies of the trust.
One director demanded the succession vote be suspended.
Another asked for an immediate audit.
Richard Bennett requested that all disputed transfers be frozen.
Damian slammed both hands on the table.
“Enough!”
The room quieted.
His face was red now.
“This changes nothing.”
Elena raised an eyebrow.
“It changes forty-one percent.”
“It changes nothing!”
He pointed at the medical report still displayed on the screen.
“Adrian Whitmore is mentally incompetent.”
The words hung in the room.
Damian seemed to hear his own argument forming as he spoke.
His confidence returned.
“If Adrian is incapacitated, every agreement dependent on his judgment becomes subject to judicial review.”
Margaret frowned.
“That is not necessarily true.”
“It is if the trust itself is compromised.”
Damian turned toward the board.
“This woman is the spouse of a mentally unstable man.”
Elena’s expression hardened.
“She has obvious personal interests.”
He pointed toward her stomach.
“She is currently the subject of a paternity dispute.”
Richard stood.
“That has nothing to do with her capacity as trustee.”
“It has everything to do with conflict of interest.”
Damian’s voice grew stronger.
“We petition the court immediately.”
Victoria understood.
Her posture straightened.
“Yes.”
Damian continued.
“We freeze the marital trust pending a full competency review of Adrian and an investigation into Elena.”
Elena stared at him.
Damian smiled.
There it was again.
That same smug certainty.
“You thought you were clever.”
He leaned across the table.
“But your forty-one percent belongs to a trust created by a man who no longer has the mental capacity to manage his own affairs.”
Elena didn’t move.
Damian turned toward Margaret.
“Record my motion.”
Before Margaret could answer, footsteps sounded outside the boardroom.
Slow.
Heavy.
Several pairs.
Damian smiled.
“Finally.”
He looked toward the doors.
“I assume security has decided to do its job.”
Elena’s eyes remained on him.
The footsteps stopped.
The handles turned.
Damian straightened his jacket.
“Perfect timing.”
The doors opened.
Daniel Brooks entered first.
Two attorneys followed.
Behind them came three investigators in dark suits.
And behind the investigators were two law enforcement officers.
Damian’s smile disappeared.
Then one final man stepped through the doors.
Adrian Whitmore.
Victoria gasped.
Richard stood.
Margaret’s hand flew to her mouth.
Damian didn’t move at all.
Adrian wore a dark suit and no tie.
His face was calm.
Far too calm.
He walked past Daniel.
Past the investigators.
Past his mother.
He stopped beside Elena and looked at the fading red mark across her cheek.
His eyes changed.
“Who did that?”
Elena glanced at Victoria.
Adrian followed her gaze.
Victoria took one step backward.
Then Adrian turned toward his brother.
Damian looked as though he had forgotten how to breathe.
“You’re supposed to be in London.”
Adrian walked to the head of the table.
He placed both hands flat against the polished wood.
For six months, Damian had sat in that place.
Now he backed away from it.
Adrian looked around the boardroom.
Then his eyes settled on Damian.
“Now let’s talk about what you did to my wife.”
Part 8 | My Husband Came Back From the Dead
Victoria moved first.
“My son!”
She rushed around the table with both arms extended, tears appearing so quickly that Elena almost admired the performance.
Adrian did not embrace her.
Victoria stopped inches from him.
“Oh, thank God.”
Her voice broke.
“You’re safe.”
Adrian stared at his mother.
“Safe from what?”
Victoria blinked.
“From whatever happened to you in London.”
“Nothing happened to me in London.”
“Adrian, please.”
She reached for his arm.
He stepped away.
The rejection hit harder than if he had shouted.
Victoria looked around the boardroom, suddenly aware that every director was watching.
“Elena has filled your head with lies.”
Adrian said nothing.
“She’s been confused for months. Emotional. Angry. She misunderstood decisions that were made to protect you.”
Still nothing.
Victoria’s voice became softer.
“I’m your mother.”
Adrian finally spoke.
“Did you burn my daughter’s ultrasound?”
Victoria froze.
The question seemed to strike her physically.
Elena’s hand moved instinctively over her stomach.
Damian looked at his mother.
Richard Bennett slowly lowered his eyes.
Victoria opened her mouth.
“I don’t know what Elena told you.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
“Adrian—”
“Did you burn my daughter’s ultrasound?”
Silence.
Victoria’s face tightened.
“It was a photograph.”
Elena closed her eyes.
There it was.
Not denial.
Not confusion.
A justification.
Adrian stared at his mother as though he were seeing a stranger.
“A photograph?”
Victoria straightened.
“You were overseas. Elena was behaving irrationally. We were trying to prevent a scandal.”
“So you burned it.”

“She was using that pregnancy to manipulate you.”
“My wife was pregnant with my child.”
“We didn’t know that.”
“I did.”
Victoria stopped.
Adrian’s voice dropped.
“I never questioned whether that baby was mine.”
Damian stepped forward.
“You told me you had concerns.”
“No.”
“You were under tremendous pressure.”
“I said no.”
Damian’s jaw tightened.
“You don’t remember everything you said in London.”
Adrian looked at him.
“I remember enough to know I never spoke to you about my wife’s fidelity.”
Damian gestured toward the screen.
“There are messages.”
“Forged.”
“Documents.”
“Forged.”
“A medical diagnosis.”
Adrian’s eyes went cold.
“Forged.”
Victoria shook her head.
“You’re taking Elena’s word over your family.”
Adrian glanced at Elena’s cheek.
The red mark from Victoria’s slap was still visible.
“Yes.”
Victoria recoiled.
“After everything I’ve done for you?”
Adrian laughed once.
It was quiet and bitter.
“That’s the problem, Mother.”
“What?”
“I’m beginning to understand exactly what you’ve done for me.”
Daniel Brooks stepped forward.
He placed a laptop on the table.
“Mr. Whitmore has authorized the board to review several files recovered from his private security server.”
Damian’s expression changed.
“What files?”
Elena opened her laptop.
“Yours.”
She connected it to the boardroom display.
The paternity accusation disappeared.
A security archive appeared instead.
Damian looked toward Victoria.
Victoria looked suddenly uncertain.
Elena clicked the first file.
A man’s voice filled the room.
Damian’s voice.
“Any call from Elena gets flagged. She does not speak to London.”
Another voice asked a question.
Damian answered.
“I don’t care what excuse you use. Tell her he’s unavailable.”
The recording ended.
No one spoke.
Damian recovered quickly.
“That could be edited.”
Elena clicked another file.
His voice returned.
“If Adrian’s office sends anything directly to New York, route it through Melissa first.”
A man responded.
“But Melissa doesn’t technically work for him anymore.”
Damian laughed on the recording.
“She does if everyone believes she does.”
Richard Bennett looked at Damian.
“You replaced his staff to control his communications.”
Damian pointed at Elena.
“She manipulated the audio.”
“Then you won’t mind a forensic review,” Elena said.
Damian said nothing.
She opened the next file.
This time Victoria’s voice filled the room.
“Change the estate codes tonight.”
A security manager responded.
“Mrs. Whitmore is still listed as an authorized resident.”
“Not after tonight.”
“She’s pregnant.”
“I’m aware.”
“What if she refuses to leave?”
Victoria’s recorded voice became colder.
“Then escort her off the property.”
The file ended.
Adrian did not look at his mother.
That frightened Victoria more than anger would have.
“Adrian.”
He remained silent.
“She was creating chaos in the house.”
Elena stared at her.
“I was packing a suitcase.”
“You screamed at me.”
“You took my passport.”
Victoria’s mouth snapped shut.
Adrian turned slowly.
“You took her passport?”
“For safekeeping.”
“She was thirty years old.”
“She was unstable.”
Elena clicked another recording.
A male voice appeared.
Dr. Stephen Mercer.
“I can describe acute paranoia and executive dysfunction, but if anyone requests treatment records, we have a problem.”
Damian answered.
“They won’t.”
Mercer continued.
“I’ve never examined him.”
“You don’t need to examine him.”
“I need something to support the diagnosis.”
Damian laughed.
“You need the wire transfer to clear.”
The recording ended.
