"Pregnant woman in dilapidated house" Chapter 9
Margaret Cole stared at Damian.
“My God.”
Damian stood perfectly still.
One of the investigators behind Adrian wrote something down.
Victoria looked toward him.
“Who are these people?”
Adrian ignored the question.
Elena opened another file.
Damian’s voice came through again.
“Once the board accepts the report, I become chairman.”
Then Victoria.
“And the trust?”
“We challenge Elena’s child.”
A pause.
Then Damian laughed.
“By the time Adrian gets back, there won’t be anything left for him to save.”
The room was so quiet Elena could hear the air-conditioning.
Adrian looked at his brother.
“You said that?”
Damian swallowed.
“It’s out of context.”
“What context makes that better?”
“You don’t understand what was happening here.”
“I understand twenty-three million dollars disappeared.”
Damian’s eyes flicked toward Richard.
“I understand you mortgaged the estate.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“I understand you forged my signature.”
“You can’t prove I forged anything.”
“No.”
Adrian glanced toward the investigators.
“But they can try.”
Damian’s face changed.
Victoria immediately stepped between her sons.
“Enough.”
Adrian looked at her.
“You still think you can order me around?”
“I am trying to save this family.”
“No.”
His voice was calm.
“You’re trying to save yourself.”
Victoria’s eyes filled with tears again.
“Elena has turned you against me.”
Elena almost responded.
Adrian lifted one hand.
“No.”
He looked at his mother.
“Elena didn’t do anything.”
Victoria shook her head.
“She poisoned you.”
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“I came home and found my pregnant wife barefoot in a house with no roof.”
Victoria flinched.
“She showed me evidence.”
He stepped closer.
“You gave me the rest.”
Victoria’s lips trembled.
Adrian looked toward Elena.
“Is there more?”
Elena hesitated.
“Yes.”
Victoria went pale.
Elena opened the final audio file.
Music could be heard first.
The string quartet from Whitmore Estate.
Then glasses clinking.
Damian’s voice.
“Tomorrow, Whitmore Global finally belongs to someone strong enough to run it.”
Several directors looked toward him.
Then Vanessa laughed.
The recording continued.
Victoria’s voice came through.
Clear.
Elegant.
Cruel.
“Elena was never a problem. She was an inconvenience.”
Adrian lowered his eyes.
Then came another exchange.
Vanessa asked where Elena was living.
Damian answered.
“The old farmhouse.”
Laughter.
Victoria spoke again.
“We simply stopped paying for the life she had no right to expect.”
Elena watched Adrian.
His face had become unreadable.
Then the final sentence played.
The sentence that had kept him awake all night.
Victoria’s voice filled the boardroom.
“Elena should be grateful we allowed her to leave with the baby.”
The recording stopped.
Nobody moved.
Adrian slowly looked at his mother.
Victoria’s lips parted.
For once, she had nothing to say.
“You allowed her to leave alive?”
“No.”
Victoria shook her head.
“That isn’t what I meant.”
“Then explain it.”
“It was an expression.”
“Explain it.”
“I was angry.”
“Explain it.”
Victoria’s voice cracked.
“I didn’t mean we would hurt her!”
Adrian stared at her.

“You threw a pregnant woman out of her home.”
“She had somewhere to go.”
“A house with no heat.”
“She survived.”
The moment Victoria said it, she seemed to realize what she had done.
Adrian’s face changed.
Not anger.
Something worse.
Whatever part of him had still wanted an explanation from his mother disappeared.
“You’re right.”
His voice was almost a whisper.
“She survived.”
He looked at Elena.
“But she shouldn’t have had to.”
Victoria began crying.
Real tears this time.
Adrian turned away.
One of the investigators stepped forward.
“Damian Whitmore?”
Damian looked at him.
“We need you to remain in this room.”
“For what?”
“Questions concerning suspected financial fraud, identity theft, forgery, and conspiracy.”
Damian laughed nervously.
“This is a corporate meeting.”
“Not anymore.”
The second investigator moved toward him.
Damian backed away.
“You have nothing.”
“Mr. Whitmore—”
“You have nothing!”
His eyes landed on Elena’s black folder.
Something wild crossed his face.
Before anyone understood what he was doing, Damian lunged.
He grabbed the folder.
“Damian!” Victoria screamed.
Elena stepped back.
He ripped it open.
Documents spilled across the table.
Damian seized the first stack and tore it in half.
Then again.
And again.
“Stop him!” Richard shouted.
An investigator rushed forward.
Damian swept another stack onto the floor.
Pages scattered everywhere.
Bank records.
Emails.
Medical reports.
Signature analyses.
He stomped on them and ripped another bundle apart.
“You have nothing!”
Paper floated across the boardroom like white confetti.
Damian laughed.
It was breathless and desperate.
“You stupid bitch.”
Adrian moved toward him.
Two officers grabbed Damian first.
He struggled between them, still laughing.
“All your evidence!”
He looked down at the shredded pages.
“Gone.”
Elena stared at the floor.
Then at Damian.
She was completely calm.
“Those were copies.”
His laughter stopped.
Elena reached into her dress pocket.
She removed her phone.
Damian stared at her.
“What?”
Elena unlocked the screen.
A delivery confirmation was already waiting.
She turned it toward him.
“The originals are already with the FBI.”
Part 9 | The Woman Who Was Never Pregnant
Damian stopped smiling.
The room seemed to tilt around him.
The shredded copies still covered the floor, white pages scattered beneath polished chairs, while the investigators stood only a few feet away.
“The FBI?”
His voice cracked.
Elena lowered her phone.
“Yes.”
“You sent corporate documents to federal investigators?”
“I sent evidence of suspected fraud.”
Damian looked toward Adrian.
“You let her do this?”
Adrian’s expression didn’t change.
“She didn’t need my permission.”
Victoria gripped the back of her chair.
“This has gone far enough.”
One of the investigators turned toward her.
“No, Mrs. Whitmore.”
His tone was calm.
“It hasn’t.”
Damian took a step backward.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.”
Richard Bennett stood.
“I do.”
Every head turned toward the CFO.
Richard removed his glasses and placed them carefully on the table.
“For three weeks, I’ve been reviewing irregular lending activity connected to Hudson Crest Development.”

Damian’s face tightened.
“You had no authority to conduct an independent review.”
Richard looked at him.
“I’m the chief financial officer.”
“You report to the chairman.”
“You weren’t chairman.”
The words landed hard.
Richard continued.
“And after what I found, I’m not convinced you should ever be allowed near another corporate account.”
Damian’s jaw flexed.
“What exactly did Elena tell you?”
Richard looked toward her.
“Enough to make me check.”
He turned back to the board.
“Three weeks ago, Elena contacted finance with concerns about unauthorized loans tied to shell entities.”
Victoria scoffed.
“She had no role in the company.”
Richard ignored her.
“At first, I assumed she was wrong.”
Elena raised an eyebrow.
Richard gave her a brief look.
“I was wrong.”
He opened his laptop.
“The twenty-three million dollars she traced is only the visible portion of the problem.”
The room went silent again.
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“How bad?”
Richard hesitated.
“If the next loan package had cleared, Whitmore Global would have guaranteed another thirty-eight million dollars against Hudson Crest.”
Adrian went still.
“Thirty-eight?”
“Yes.”
Richard pulled up a projection.
“And because Hudson Crest is already failing, the guarantees would likely have triggered cross-default provisions with two other lenders.”
Margaret Cole leaned forward.
“What would that have done?”
Richard looked around the table.
“Best case?”
He paused.
“We would have faced an emergency liquidity crisis.”
“And worst case?” Adrian asked.
Richard’s face hardened.
“We could have lost access to short-term financing across three divisions.”
A director near the far end whispered, “Jesus Christ.”
Richard nodded.
“If Elena hadn’t flagged the transactions three weeks ago, finance might have processed the next package automatically.”
Elena looked at Damian.
He looked suddenly smaller.
Richard continued.
“She didn’t just find missing money.”
He closed the laptop.
“She may have prevented this company from collapsing under loans nobody on this board properly authorized.”
No one spoke.
Then Margaret opened the voting register.
“I believe we need to address Mr. Damian Whitmore’s status immediately.”
Damian turned toward her.
“You cannot be serious.”
“I am.”
“This meeting was called to discuss Adrian.”
“The circumstances have changed.”
“You don’t have cause.”
Richard laughed.
It was the first time Elena had ever heard him do that in a boardroom.
“You want us to make a list?”
Margaret ignored both men.
“All directors eligible to vote on an emergency suspension of Damian Whitmore from executive duties, raise your hands.”
Hands went up.
One.
Three.
Five.
Then more.
Victoria stared in disbelief.
“No.”
Margaret counted.
“Eleven in favor.”
Damian looked around the table.
“You cowards.”
Two more hands rose.
“Thirteen.”
Margaret lowered her pen.
“The motion passes.”
Damian slammed his palm against the table.
“This is temporary.”
Adrian finally spoke.
“Suspended?”
Everyone turned.
He looked at Margaret.
“No.”
Margaret hesitated.
“Adrian, the board can only—”
“He’s fired.”
Damian laughed sharply.
“You can’t fire me.”
Adrian looked toward Elena.
She rested one hand on the protective marital trust.
Forty-one percent.
Damian followed his gaze.
The laughter disappeared.
Adrian’s voice remained calm.
“As controlling executive shareholder, with the acting trustee supporting the action, I can remove you from every position I appointed you to.”
Damian’s face turned red.
“You’re making a mistake.”
