"My Wife Has Been Dead for Five Years. Today, She Sent Me A Text..." Chapter 3

He lunged forward with a suppressed roar, driving the heavy butt of his Sig Sauer against the unstable bricks until they collapsed inward with a sickening crunch. Behind the hollow partition lay not a hidden exit, but a small, recessed alcove illuminated by the flickering, sickly green light of a portable medical monitor.

Strapped to an upright stainless-steel frame inside the alcove was the lifeless, hollowed-out shell of a man Damian recognized instantly despite the mutilation.

Dr. Sterling, his elite psychiatrist and blood-bound cousin, stared blankly ahead with eyes that had been permanently frozen open by surgical retractors. Across the dead man’s chest, carved into the pale flesh with surgical precision, was the burning numeral 1, dripping wet and smelling of formaldehyde.

Damian slammed his palm against the damp stone wall, a choked sound of sheer disbelief tearing its way past his locked jaw.

"You psychotic bitch," he hissed into the empty vault, his voice ricocheting off the dripping concrete walls with frantic, hollow resonance. Before the echo could die, his burner phone shrieked from his palm, vibrating so violently it nearly slipped from his sweat-slicked fingers.

He swiped the screen open, his eyes darting across the final, mocking notification that flashed in a bright, blinding white font. The digit had officially vanished, replaced entirely by an attached audio file labeled with a single, blood-red exclamation point.

Without thinking, his thumb hit play, and the tinny, distorted speaker crackled to life inside the subterranean tomb.

Instead of a voice, the audio broadcast a rhythmic, maddeningly slow sound that made the hairs on Damian's arms stand straight up.

Clack. Clack. Clack. It was the crisp, unhurried echo of stiletto heels striking polished concrete, moving through an empty, vaulted corridor toward an unknown destination.

Layered softly underneath the footsteps was a low, mechanical humming sound—the exact signature of the Sterling estate's private security mainframe.

The realization hit Damian like a physical blow to the stomach, stealing the breath from his lungs and turning his blood into jagged ice. She wasn't just tearing down his outer circle from afar; she had bypassed the primary vault of his home network while he was chasing ghosts.

He didn't hesitate a second longer, turning on his heel and sprinting back up the subterranean stairs with reckless, adrenaline-fueled speed. He burst out of the sanitarium's rotting lobby and into the blinding fury of the New England storm, his boots pounding through the mud.

Throwing himself into the utility rover, he slammed the door shut, shoved the transmission into drive, and floored the accelerator to the floorboards.

The heavy vehicle fishtailed violently across the flooded, unpaved exit before lunging onto the slick asphalt of the coastal highway.

The digital speedometer climbed relentlessly—90, 110, 140—until it finally locked at a terrifying 160 kilometers per hour through the blinding sheets of rain.

The world outside melted into a smeared, chaotic blur of dark trees and flashing road signs that threatened to send him careening into the abyss.

His primary cell phone buzzed relentlessly on the passenger seat, vibrating in an erratic rhythm that signaled an automated security breach at home. He glanced sideways for a fraction of a second; the estate's perimeter cameras were blinking offline one by one in a systematic digital blackout.

"Not my house. You don't take my house," Damian snarled, his knuckles turning chalk-white as he gripped the steering wheel with death-like intensity.

Ahead of him, flashing red and white lights signaled a municipal road barrier blocking the direct bridge route due to rising storm floodwaters. A pair of state troopers stood beneath yellow slickers beside a parked cruiser, waving frantic flashlights to force oncoming traffic onto a detour.

Damian didn't even tap the brakes; he veered sharply across the dividing line, his tires screaming in protest against the slick, waterlogged asphalt.

The rover slammed directly through the plastic safety barriers, sending orange cones and wooden beams flying into the air like shattered matchsticks. Shouts of anger from the troopers were instantly swallowed by the roaring engine and the deafening howl of the midnight tempest.

He drove like a madman possessed, his mind entirely consumed by the single, terrifying truth of what waited for him behind his front doors.

Within fifteen punishing minutes, the towering wrought-iron gates of the Sterling estate loomed out of the dark, battered by the relentless storm. The automated security gate hung wide open, its thick hydraulic arms snapped cleanly in half as if torn apart by industrial-grade hydraulic shears.

Damian didn't slow down; he drove straight through the ruined entrance, tearing across the immaculate front lawn and chewing up thousands in landscaping.

He slammed the rover into park right at the base of the grand marble steps, killing the engine with a harsh, clicking mechanical shudder. Flashing his Sig Sauer, he vaulted out of the vehicle and sprinted up the wet stone steps, ignoring the bitter wind biting at his face. The massive oak front doors were unlocked, swinging inward on their hinges with a low, mournful groan that welcomed the storm inside.

Damian kicked the left door wide open, throwing his weight forward and crossing the threshold with his weapon raised in a combat stance.

The grand foyer was dead silent, save for the rhythmic dripping of water from his wet coat pooling onto the pristine white marble floor. The crystal chandelier above was dark, its hundreds of faceted prisms swaying slightly in the phantom draft blowing through the shattered windows.

He lowered his shoulder, pressing forward into the expansive hallway that led directly toward his private, biometric-locked executive study.

Every muscle in his body was coiled like a spring, every nerve ending screaming in anticipation of the trap waiting in the shadows. He reached the heavy mahogany door of his study, finding it standing slightly ajar, a thin sliver of warm, golden light bleeding into the dark corridor.

Without a word, Damian raised his boot and kicked the door open with a thunderous crash that rattled the frames of the priceless art inside.

The room was completely empty, yet sitting dead center on his mahogany desk was a glowing, open laptop displaying a live video feed. On the screen, a camera positioned directly above his own master bed showed a single, dark silhouette sitting quietly in the center of the sheets.

Before Damian could process the feed, the computer speakers came alive with a soft, synthetic click, followed by a light, teasing chuckle.

"Welcome home, my darling," the audio whispered through the empty study, carrying a lethal, calm authority that made his blood run cold.

Damian spun around toward the private en-suite bathroom door as it slowly clicked open, revealing a wall of thick, swirling steam and a single, wet footprint.
