"In This Life, Believe Me" Chapter 11 — The Life We Chose
Chapter 11 — The Life We Chose
The explosion sounded smaller than a gunshot.
Adrian’s body struck mine and drove us both to the concrete.
For one second, I heard nothing.
Then the warehouse returned in fragments—alarms, shouting officers, rain hammering the roof.
Adrian lay across my legs.
His right hand was wrapped around the remains of the ring. Two fingers were gone. Blood poured through a hole in his palm, and tungsten fragments had buried themselves in his forearm and vest.
His eyes found mine.
"Good," he breathed. "Not your hand."
"Stay with me."
I tore the strap from my tactical harness and tightened it above his elbow. He groaned but remained conscious.
Kane crawled toward a fallen pistol.
I did not leave Adrian.
I drew my backup weapon with my left hand and fired into the concrete beside Kane’s fingers.
"Try again."
He froze.
Daniel reached us first. He kicked the pistol away, handcuffed Kane, and read him his rights while the evidence team secured the damaged remote.
Only when paramedics took over the tourniquet did I release Adrian.
"The servers," I told Owen as he knelt beside me. "Make sure the transaction stays live. Kane used the buyer account ending in 7719."
My father stared at the blood on my clothes.
"You’re hurt."
"Shoulder only. Secure the evidence."
He wanted to carry me out.
Instead, he stood and followed my order.
That was how I knew he finally understood: loving me did not mean making me smaller.
Surgeons worked on Adrian for eleven hours.
They saved his arm and thumb but could not restore two fingers or the nerves controlling his grip. He would never fire a service weapon with his right hand again.
When he woke, I was sitting beside his hospital bed with my shoulder stitched and immobilized.
"Kane?" he asked.
"Federal custody. No bail."
"Daniel?"
"Alive and complaining. All twelve undercover officers are safe."
His eyes closed in relief.
"You came back," he whispered.
"So did you."
He looked at the bandages where his hand had been.
"I would do it again."
"Don’t."
"Evie—"
"You do not get to turn sacrifice into a language I’m required to answer."
Pain crossed his face, but he nodded.
I moved closer.
"You believed me before the warehouse. You followed my call when Daniel was in danger. You let me finish the operation after you spent an entire lifetime wishing you could lock me somewhere safe. That matters more than what happened to your hand."
"What does it mean?"
"It means we are alive. It means we take our time."
For once, Adrian did not ask for more.
My father came in after visiting hours with three coffees and Daniel behind him. Daniel had a bandage across his forehead and my unpaid lunch bill written on the back of a hospital menu.
The four of us sat together without mentioning graves, warrants, or second lives.

We did not need to. Every empty chair that should have existed was occupied.
When the nurse ordered everyone out, Owen kissed my forehead and shook Adrian’s uninjured hand.
"You kept your promise," he said.
Adrian looked at me. "She kept hers. I followed."
It was the right answer.
Victor Kane’s trial lasted four months. The transaction recording, financial ledger, weapons, narcotics, and testimony from protected witnesses dismantled every defense his attorneys raised. He received multiple life sentences in federal prison.
The government seized his shell companies and more than sixty million dollars in criminal assets. Part of the recovered money funded treatment programs in the neighborhoods his organization had targeted.
Natalie pleaded guilty to conspiracy, attempted obstruction, unlawful access to protected records, and attempting to compromise a covert officer. She never caused the massacre she had planned in our first life, so the dead could not testify against her in this one. The evidence we created before anyone was harmed was enough to send her to federal prison for nine years.
At sentencing, she looked at me and said, "You took everything from me."
"No," I answered. "I stopped you from taking it from someone else."
Daniel attended the hearing with his wife and daughter.
In my first life, his daughter had been six when she stood beside his coffin. Now she ran into his arms outside the courthouse and demanded ice cream.
I turned away before anyone saw me cry.
Owen did not.
My father put an arm around my shoulders.
"You saved all of them."
"We did."
"No." He looked toward Adrian, Daniel, and the officers crossing the courthouse steps. "We helped. You led. I should have known the difference the first time."
That apology reached a place inside me that words spoken over my bones never could.
One year later, Adrian became director of undercover training and intelligence coordination for Port Alder. He learned to write with his left hand, shoot with it when qualification rules required, and ask for help when buttons defeated him.
Recovery was not noble or graceful. He threw a therapy ball across the room the first time his damaged hand failed to close. I picked it up, placed it back on the table, and waited until he chose to try again.
When nightmares woke me with the taste of seawater in my mouth, he did not tell me the past was over. He sat on the floor beside my bed and counted breaths with me until the room became real.
We attended therapy separately before we ever attended it together.
I became the task force’s youngest field supervisor.
We worked in adjoining buildings and saw each other almost every day. Sometimes we disagreed. Sometimes the memory of our first life entered a room before either of us did.
But he never used guilt to hold me, and I never pretended love erased what happened.
We built something new instead.
On the anniversary of Operation Breakwater, we stood at Pier Nineteen after the memorial ceremony for officers lost in other cases. The old warehouse had been demolished. Beyond the fence, the Atlantic reflected the evening sky.
Adrian opened his right hand as far as the damaged tendons allowed. The brass compass rested in his palm.
"You gave this to me in two lives," he said.
"Technically, I only gave it to you in one. You stole it from my birthday table in this one."
"Borrowed."
"For two years?"
"I was waiting for the right time to return it."
I smiled.
He grew serious.
"I don’t want to promise I’ll protect you from everything. We both know that promise would be a lie."
"Good start."
"Wherever you go next, I’ll stand beside you—if you’ll let me."
This was not the confession I had begged for at twenty-four.
It was better.
It came without shame, fear, or a demand that I become less brave so he could feel less afraid.
I placed the compass back in his palm and closed my fingers around his injured hand.
"This time," I said, "we go together."
