"Crowned in Dragonfire" Part 8 — When the Palace Went Dark
Part 8 — When the Palace Went Dark
Darkness reached the city before the alarm bells did.
The Crownfire lamps along every bridge failed. The ward towers on the northern wall stopped answering. In the courtyard below, horses screamed as shadows moved where no bodies stood.
The guards took Celeste, Cassian, and Malrec to separate rooms beneath the king's council chamber. No one dared use the lower dungeons while the palace wards were dead.
I should have gone to the physicians.
Instead, I went to the war room.
Messages arrived by ordinary riders because the royal beacons no longer carried flame. Two forts on the eastern border had lost their protection. The western river gates had frozen despite running water. Men who had served the Crown for decades suddenly refused orders unless they came from Cassian.
I divided the war table into three fronts. Queen Lenora took the palace gates. Edmund sent ordinary signal fires to the border. I ordered the physicians to distribute salt and iron through the servants' quarters, where frightened people had no family banners to protect them.
"Why the servants first?" one councilor asked.
"Because the Engine entered through those with access and no protection," I said. "A palace cannot defend a kingdom if the people carrying its messages are already dead."
Gideon studied the reports.
"The Engine is calling in old debts."
"What debts?" King Edmund asked.
"Every lord who profited when the prince broke an oath. Every officer promoted after looking away. The parasite tied reward to obedience. Now it is pulling those threads."
The first betrayal came from inside the palace.
Lord Harrow, commander of the inner guard, released Celeste through a passage behind the council chapel. Cassian remained under watch, but three councilors demanded his freedom.
"The king may confine his son," Lord Harrow declared, "but he cannot suspend the heir to the throne without a vote of the Privy Council. Until that vote occurs, the army answers to Prince Cassian."
He was legally correct.
Six council seats stood empty. Two lords had barricaded themselves inside their estates. One had vanished after the chapel. Harrow needed only to delay the vote until Celeste reached the Crownfire source.
I ordered the city gates closed, but he produced a military countermand bearing Cassian's seal.
"His authority remains superior to yours," Harrow said.
"For the next ten minutes," I replied.
I sent riders to bring every available peer into the war room and ordered three clerks to record the proceedings. If Harrow wanted to hide behind law, I would make law move faster than his conspiracy.
Cassian had spent years replacing duty with personal favor, yet the laws of Valedorn still placed half the kingdom's soldiers beneath his seal.
Celeste appeared on the gallery above us with a knife at the throat of the royal archivist.
"Release my husband," she called. "One public declaration from him will restore everything."

Gray smoke curled around the nobles standing below her.
Cassian was brought to the war room in chains. He looked from Celeste to the gathered lords.
"If I command the guard to stand down," he said, "will you release the archivist?"
"Say I am innocent. Say Elara bewitched the child. Choose me again."
The smoke brightened.
Cassian hesitated.
Not because he doubted the lie. Because he was calculating which side would leave him a throne.
I stepped onto the council dais.
"Call the full Council of Peers. Now."
Lord Harrow laughed. "You hold no office."
"I bear the authenticated heir. The Ten Marches are held in his trust, and their levies are not under Cassian's personal command."
The laughter stopped.
I placed the iron keys to the Marches on the council table.
"I surrender every private claim to their revenues until my child comes of age. In return, the Marcher army will swear to Valedorn through the Council, not to me, not to Cassian, and not to any single sovereign."
Three border lords rose.
"The Marches accept," said the eldest.
The remaining peers argued that a pregnant woman with no military title could not command during a siege. I agreed.
"I am not asking for a private army. I am asking you to separate military command from a man charged with using the Great Seal to kill the bearer of his own heir. Name a Protector whose orders expire at trial. Record every power you grant and every limit upon it."
That proposal frightened them less than Cassian's unchecked seal.
Their votes broke the balance.
The Council froze Cassian's military authority pending trial and named me Acting Protector of the Crownmarked Heir. Queen Lenora ordered the white-wolf guard to secure every gate.
My first order required two signatures for any arrest, troop movement, or treasury withdrawal. My second placed the royal nursery, physicians, archives, and signal towers under separate commanders.
The Engine had grown by making one person's favor stronger than every institution. I would not fight it by becoming another single point of failure.
Celeste dragged the archivist backward into the passage.
"You think paperwork makes you powerful?"
"No," I said. "It makes your allies choose whether dying for you is written into law."
Lord Harrow looked toward the Marcher commanders entering the hall.
He lowered his sword.
Celeste shoved the archivist aside and ran.
A white-wolf guard caught the archivist before he fell from the gallery. I sent half the soldiers after Celeste and kept half in the hall.
Harrow had lowered his sword, but gray veins still moved beneath his skin. I ordered him disarmed, examined, and held with dignity until the influence could be separated from his own choices.
"He betrayed you," Cassian said.
"Then he will answer for what he chose after we learn what was done to him. That distinction is the one you keep refusing to understand."
Cassian called after her. "Celeste, stop!"
She did not look back.
The Favor Engine had promised her a crown. It no longer needed the man she had supposedly crossed worlds to love.
Gideon spread an old foundation map across the table. The passage descended toward the sacred chamber beneath the Chapel of the First Crown, where the original Crownfire entered House Ashbourne's bloodline.
"If she reaches the source," he said, "she can tear the remaining fire out of the kingdom."
The floor shuddered.
Far beneath us, something vast gave a single dying roar.
Outside the windows, the last golden line around the capital disappeared.
Valedorn went completely dark.

The Wife They Thought Was Decorative
Evelyn Bennett spent seven years helping her husband become the celebrated face of the hospitality empire she built with her late mother's money. To Graham Whitmore and his powerful family, Evie was useful as long as she stayed behind the scenes—designing their restaurants, serving their dinners, and never reminding anyone who actually owned the company. Then, at a Sunday dinner in Evie's own home, her mother-in-law gives every guest a seat except her and insults the mother Evie is still grieving. Evie throws the untouched dinner away, leaves her wedding ring behind, and walks out. What looks like a family argument is only the first stage of a carefully planned trap. A message on Graham's phone reveals a secret campaign to portray Evie as unstable. Buried inside a reconciliation agreement is an irrevocable proxy that would transfer control of her voting shares to her husband—even after divorce. At the same time, millions of dollars have been disappearing through a vendor connected to his mother, supported by approvals bearing Evie's signature. The Whitmores believe the quiet wife who created their menus will return, apologize, and sign away her future. They have forgotten that before Evie built restaurants, she investigated fraud. Now she must follow the money, protect the employees her husband has threatened, and expose a conspiracy that reaches deeper into her marriage than she ever imagined. Because when the family gathers to vote her out of her own company, they do not bring a simple forgery. They bring another woman wearing Evie's face.Human Nature|Glow-Up11.1k words5 42 -
