"Crowned in Dragonfire" Part 9 — The Price of a Kingdom
Part 9 — The Price of a Kingdom
The darkness hurt my child.
Rowan curled inward as the Crownfire vanished. A sharp cramp tightened across my abdomen, followed by another. When I stood, blood marked the chair beneath me.
The chief physician barred the war-room door.
"If you go below the palace, you may lose him."
"If the Engine takes the source, there will be no kingdom for him to inherit."
"That is not a physician's answer."
"It is a mother's."
I signed an emergency order naming Queen Lenora guardian of the heir if I died. Then I gave her the keys to the Ten Marches.
I also dictated orders for the Marcher commanders, the Royal College, and the palace kitchens. If Crownspire fell, the Council would move to Greyhaven. If the royal blood wards failed completely, no physician was to use another living person as fuel to preserve mine.
The chief physician signed as witness with an angry hand.
"You prepare for death too efficiently."
"I prepare so other people can keep living if it happens."
"You planned this before entering the chapel," she said.
"I learned to plan for men choosing badly."
Elias armed himself with a short sword despite his wounded shoulder. Gideon carried the forbidden ledger and a lantern filled with ordinary oil.
At the entrance to the foundation stair, my father stopped.
"Only the first mother and a keeper of the Observatory can enter the sacred chamber. Elias goes with you. I must remain above to translate the Engine's bindings for the Council."
He pressed his forehead to mine.
"I spent three years trying to survive long enough to save you. Do not make survival the one lesson you refuse to learn from me."
"I intend to come back."
Elias and I descended.
The first landing had collapsed into a shaft filled with extinguished ward stones. Elias crossed on a rusted chain and secured a rope for me. The second passage forced us through water cold enough to numb my legs.
At the third gate, dragon-glass reflected our worst choices instead of our faces. I saw myself offering Cassian the bargain before dawn. Elias saw the moment he had obeyed the order to seal my father's archives.
"The chamber tests whether we can name our own guilt," he said.
"Then name it."
"I valued my position more than Gideon's freedom."
The glass cleared.
"I risked a child partly because I wanted the power attached to him," I said. "I love him now. That does not make the beginning pure."
The final gate opened.
The steps spiraled beneath the palace until the stone became warm. At the bottom lay a cavern veined with dragon-glass. In its center burned a weak gold flame no larger than a candle.
Celeste stood over it.
The Favor Engine surrounded her like a second body, a wheel of smoke turning behind her head. Lord Harrow and six enthralled guards blocked our path.

"Give me the child," she said, "and I will return what the Engine took."
"You cannot carry him."
"I do not need to. The Engine can take his Crownfire directly. I will go home rich, young, and immortal. You can keep whatever is left of him."
"Did it promise to send you home before or after you married Cassian?"
Celeste's expression sharpened.
"My first life was small. No one listened when I spoke. No one noticed when I disappeared. Here, the most powerful man in the kingdom chose me over everyone."
"And that was still not enough."
"Why should enough be decided by people who already have everything?"
For a heartbeat, I understood the wound beneath her hunger. Then I remembered my father in chains and Rowan screaming inside the wrong body.
A wound explained cruelty. It did not inherit the right to commit it.
At last, she had stopped pretending this was love.
I lowered my sword.
"Tell it to release the guards first."
Elias stared at me, then understood. He let his own weapon fall.
Celeste smiled.
The gray threads loosened around Lord Harrow and his men. As they collapsed, the Engine moved closer to me, eager for the Crownmarked blood.
"Mother," Rowan whispered, "the door is still open."
Beneath the cavern floor, my blood on the ancestral oath glowed like a buried road.
"Wait until it touches us."
Celeste extended her hand.
Gray smoke wrapped around my wrist.
"Now."
Rowan bit into the thread.
The Engine shrieked through every stone in Crownspire.
Gold surged up the hidden path from the oath I had marked in the chapel. It caught the wheel of smoke and pulled it into the open.
Elias kicked his sword into his good hand and cut Celeste away from the flame.
Lord Harrow rose behind him, gray smoke still webbed across his eyes. Instead of striking Elias, he drove his shoulder into one of Celeste's enthralled guards.
"I accepted the prince's promotions," he gasped. "I will answer for that. I will not give this thing my sword again."
The choice snapped one of the Engine's threads. Two more guards collapsed free.
Celeste slashed at me with the same silver knife she had used in the chapel. I caught her wrist. We struggled at the edge of the sacred flame until Rowan sent a burst of heat through my palm.
The knife fell into the fire and melted without smoke.
I seized a shard of dragon-glass from the cavern wall. Its edge opened my palm, but my blood made the crystal blaze.
The Engine lunged toward Celeste.
She reached for it. "You promised I was the heroine!"
"It promised you whatever made you useful," I said.
I drove the burning glass through the center of the gray wheel.
The parasite folded inward, smoke collapsing into crystal. Elias slammed the shard into a prepared iron box and locked the lid.
The cavern fell silent.
Then pain crushed my abdomen.
I dropped beside the sacred flame. Blood ran between my knees.
Elias caught me. "Elara!"
"The child?"
Rowan answered weakly. "Still here."
Above us, steel rang against steel.
Queen Lenora's guard held the council stair while Cassian's remaining supporters tried to free him. By the time we reached the upper hall, she had blood across one sleeve and a sword wound beneath her ribs.
She had refused to retreat because the stair protected the physicians' wing. Three of Cassian's supporters lay disarmed at her feet; two white-wolf guards supported her weight.
"I told them," she said through clenched teeth, "that no son of mine would use my soldiers to reach a pregnant woman again."
She remained standing until she saw the iron box.
"Is it dead?"
Gideon opened the ledger beside the sealed dragon-glass.
"No. It cannot die while the royal choices that fed it remain legally honored. Cassian's oaths, warrants, appointments, and claim to the throne still give those choices force."
"Then destroy them," I said.
"Not in secret. The Crown created this wound in public law. It must reject it in public law. Every choice must be entered into the court record, and the prince must be judged by the authority he corrupted."
The iron box struck once from within.
Then again.
At dawn, the High Court bells began to ring.

The Wife They Thought Was Decorative
Evelyn Bennett spent seven years helping her husband become the celebrated face of the hospitality empire she built with her late mother's money. To Graham Whitmore and his powerful family, Evie was useful as long as she stayed behind the scenes—designing their restaurants, serving their dinners, and never reminding anyone who actually owned the company. Then, at a Sunday dinner in Evie's own home, her mother-in-law gives every guest a seat except her and insults the mother Evie is still grieving. Evie throws the untouched dinner away, leaves her wedding ring behind, and walks out. What looks like a family argument is only the first stage of a carefully planned trap. A message on Graham's phone reveals a secret campaign to portray Evie as unstable. Buried inside a reconciliation agreement is an irrevocable proxy that would transfer control of her voting shares to her husband—even after divorce. At the same time, millions of dollars have been disappearing through a vendor connected to his mother, supported by approvals bearing Evie's signature. The Whitmores believe the quiet wife who created their menus will return, apologize, and sign away her future. They have forgotten that before Evie built restaurants, she investigated fraud. Now she must follow the money, protect the employees her husband has threatened, and expose a conspiracy that reaches deeper into her marriage than she ever imagined. Because when the family gathers to vote her out of her own company, they do not bring a simple forgery. They bring another woman wearing Evie's face.Human Nature|Glow-Up11.1k words5 42 -
